If someone handed you a baby girl...

CheerfulYank Thu 21-Feb-13 15:22:33

And said, "you have seven seconds to name this child," what would your off-the-top-of-my-head response be? (Besides, obviously, wondering who this loon passing a baby around is.)

WannabeWilloughby Thu 21-Feb-13 15:25:51

Or amber or Madison

God I could go on forever here lol

skratta Thu 21-Feb-13 15:36:31

In a split second, probably a random name. Sophie, probably. In seven seconds though, I'd go for Coraline. Because I wouldn't have time to think about what would happen after because of her name, or the connection with button eye people.

Or Rebecca.

Startail Thu 21-Feb-13 15:37:15

Eliza ( My would be Eliza is sitting on my lap, willy and all!)

Astrid. No, Sarah. No, Amber. You may need to reduce the time limit grin Astrid was my first thought though.

CheerfulYank Thu 21-Feb-13 15:39:35

Oooh, these are good!

I'm having DD in May and we have a name in mind, but I don't know if I LOVE it or if it's just the best I can come up with iyswim. So I thought I'd ask what people's first reactions to "name a girl" are. Keep 'em coming! smile

Minty82 Thu 21-Feb-13 15:41:48

Susannah, at the moment. Which wasn't on the list at all when I was expecting DD less than a year ago, so we'll see if it's in the running if and when DC2 happens...

PrincessOfChina Thu 21-Feb-13 15:42:27

Harper. DP wouldn't allow it though. In fact, he wouldn't allow it before the Beckham's used it and definitely wouldn't allow it afterwards.

So we'd go with Seren, which I seriously love smile

Either Elizabeth, Katherine or Ava.

Probably Katherine, on balance.

Dh's grandma's name.

Not keen on Margaret at all. Sorry.

Maggie is cute though.

Margaret is a bit like Susan or Barbara.

Soooo many beeyootiful girl names out there. I have 2 boys so never got to use them.

Top of my head name is Rachel

Immediately followed by Alexia and Marnismile

Maryz Sat 23-Feb-13 12:14:30

CheerfulYank, you need to start a new thread, saying "if someone handed you a teenag girl (say, about 17)" and said you have five seconds to name her" what would you do.

Loads of people can think of little girl names.

But little girls grow up, and some of the names used nowadays sound very odd on teenagers (imo). I find Poppy and Daisy and Coco and Mimi odd names on teenagers.

Ruprekt Sat 23-Feb-13 12:18:59

I agree Mary.

The Maisie, Daisy, Angel, Poppy names are not as cute on older ones?

I would hate to be called these names.

Hand me a 17 y old girl and i would name her

Olivia - Liv
Kate - Kat

Maryz Sat 23-Feb-13 12:23:05

I would name a teenager Lydia I think, at the moment. Though Anna is nice. As is (was) Catherine and it's derivatives.

There are too many Emmas (seven in dd's year group), Emilys, Ellies and variants thereof (Eleanor, Ella etc), Amys, Alicia/Ellyssa etc. In fact, apart from Anna, I would rule out anything beginning with A or E.

Would never go with my surname sad

StarNoodle Sat 23-Feb-13 12:54:15

Interestingly I asked OH this question too and he said Anoushka. It is a name we have been discussing for future children, but i have come up with loads of alternatives, all of which he has liked, but that was "the one" apparently! He said Adam for a boy.

MargaretsMum Sat 23-Feb-13 17:50:38

I have name changed for this (fairly obviously) because, along with other personal information I've shared, I would utterly out myself if I used my normal name.

I have a Margaret and I absolutely love and adore it. She's nearly two and I'm so glad that the 'Thatcher' comments I've seen on here didn't put us off. I find that, in real life, lots of people have a much loved aunt/grandmother/other relative who they think of when they meet my Margaret. I love that her name is strong and has lots of shortenings to suit what she likes - she can use cute ones when she is small, funkier ones as a teenager if that's what she wants. I love that her name doesn't end in either an 'a' or an 'ee' sound, which almost every girls' name at the moment seem to (nothing wrong with that, my other daughter has a name which does). I love that little old ladies stop me to say how pleased they are to hear a name that they thought had gone forever come back.

I hear people on here quite regularly say that it is harsh, or clunky, or ugly. But personally I think that is because the trend at the moment is very much for frilly, cutesy names. We are very much in a phase where people go for Annabella, not Anne. And I think that skews perception. Personally I am of the Anne (not Annabella), Isobel (not Isabella), Mary (not Mariella) school of taste and I don't think that's harsh, just not as overtly cute as some taste.

Go for it CheerfulYank. It is a brilliant, versatile name and we love it.

CheerfulYank Sat 23-Feb-13 18:23:56

Oh lovely MargaretsMum! smile Thank you for posting. I think it will be her name, we really can't agree on anything else and I love Maggie as a shortening.

And, as previously stated, neither Thatcher nor Princess Margaret mean much to most Americans, so I'm not too worried about associations there.

LongWayRound Sat 23-Feb-13 18:42:13

I have a fabulous Aunt Margaret, who loves her name, and her mother (my Grandma) is known as Peggy, as she is Margaret too.

Go for it!

MargaretsMum Sat 23-Feb-13 19:08:15

God for it! To be honest, I'm not sure 'Thatcher' is the first thought of most Brits in real life these days either. It just is on the internet and they think it would be.

We love Maggie too, though weirdly we use her full name more than we expected.

Esme. This is not dd's name, but was one I wanted fo her but dh disliked it. That said, dd totally suts her name and did from the moment she was born.

gallicgirl Sat 23-Feb-13 23:41:02

I hate Thatcher but I still like the name Margaret, mostly because it's my gran's name and she rocks. Seriously, totally and utterly rocks.

My immediate choice would be Audrey i think.

I do like Seren and Agnes too
