Girls names with French origin

Hello!
I'm a bit of a Francophile and would love to get some inspiration here for some names of French origin. Only thing is that the area can be a bit 'judgy' so I'm looking for something not too 'in your face' French. Strange brief I know! For example, I love Amelie but that would be looked at strangely here.
Any ideas please?
Thanks!

Thanks for these!
I like Genevieve but think I might have a battle trying to get people to pronounce it gen vee ev. Think I prefer the two syllable names as my DS has a two syllable name.
Also love Aimee but think that lots of people would decide I'd gone down popular route of altering a classic name's spelling rather than seeing it a French spelling.
As I'm reading back through what I'm writing I'm realising that I'm both too concerned of what others will think, and a bit 'judgy' myself in assuming they won't 'get' the name. Oh dear!
Please do keep the ideas coming whilst I try to give myself a talking to!

AmIGoingMad Wed 13-Feb-13 16:52:17

Wow- lots of suggestions while I was typing that! Thanks- will read through now.

FWIW I know a few Amelies and don't think it is too in your face French at all.

Oh and someone suggested Chloe, but that's Greek not French

gastrognome Wed 13-Feb-13 17:18:44

DH is French and we live in a French speaking country.
Here are some of the girls' names (young and old!) in our entourage:

Sophie, Charlotte, Daphné, Anaïs, Elisa, Elodie, Marine, Céline, Emilie, Chloé, Noémi, Louise, Eloïse, Aude, Maude, Mathilde, Béatrice, Liliane, Lisette

AmIGoingMad Wed 13-Feb-13 19:11:56

There are some really beautiful names here. Thank you! I've always loved Elodie and hadn't thought of Emilie, Anais and many of the others you've suggested. I've now got a lovely load of ideas to discuss with DH as I really didn't know where to start before! Thanks for taking the time to suggest and if anyone has anymore then please keep them coming. smile

Oooh I love Celeste! Something quite heavenly sounding about that name :-)
Re Aimee- don't worry about people thinking you've got a made up spelling/you freestyled your own version of the name...it just really shows that person's ignorance of the origins of that name [shrugs shoulders Gallc style]

amandine07 Wed 13-Feb-13 20:12:53

Cecile is nice sounding too.

Delphine
Severine
Magali- I think is French but not sure

amandine07 Wed 13-Feb-13 20:15:10

I met a little French girl once who was called Oceane- beautiful name!

EnjoyResponsibly Wed 13-Feb-13 20:20:40

I love Ottilie.

PommePoire Wed 13-Feb-13 20:25:24

Marianne is a personal favourite; I like that she could be Marianne of Liberte Egalite Fraternite and the emblem of post revolutionary France, but also a Jane Austen character (Sense and Sensibility) thus ticking both French and British cultural boxes!

Coralie
Gisele
Sylvie

I have a friend with an Amelie and neither she or her husband are French . I don't think it's unusual but pretty smile!

BikeRunSki Wed 13-Feb-13 21:07:16

I have an Amy, and people are always surprised that she's not Aimee. I don't think that Aimee is considered to be an "imaginative" spelling at all.

AmIGoingMad Wed 13-Feb-13 22:02:51

Thanks all so much! I've been reading through thinking 'oh I forgot that. I love it.'

These really are such pretty names!

Elodie is deeply unfashionable for babies now though. I'd expect an Elodie to be about thirty.

LOVE Anais and Delphine as suggested

But the best for not being in your face/work in UK are Lisette and Ariane

Louise is a lovely liveable name that won't be questioned. Plus there aren't many around these days. And it sounds pretty. (From a Louise.)

My French penpal at school was called Aurelie which I thought was very pretty.

HollyMadison Fri 15-Feb-13 05:18:10

Haven't read the whole thread but I love Sylvie.

cuillereasoupe Fri 15-Feb-13 13:08:39

again sorry to be a party pooper but grin at the thought of a baby called Simone, Martine or Sylvie. It'd be like calling a baby Brenda or Jackie. Not that it matters if you don't live in France though I suppose.

AmIGoingMad Fri 15-Feb-13 15:26:29

Such lovely names!
I can see what you mean cuillere but I keep thinking that the thirty yr old Elodie would have also have been a cute baby once. I can definitely see your point though!

My 12yo has a friend in her ballet class called Elodie - I think its a very pretty name.

AmIGoingMad Sat 16-Feb-13 14:51:11
