I love this name. DH said it sounds made up (he's English, I'm Scottish).

weeblueberry Fri 08-Feb-13 17:05:44

I'm Scottish and have heard about 2-3 people in my life called Struan.

Unfortunately though it makes me think of something you do when you poo. blush. I probably shouldn't be allowed to have an opinion for things like this...

plentyofgrowingroom Fri 08-Feb-13 17:10:42

I bet that wasn't the response OP was expecting grin I'm Scottish too and I quite like it - no poo associations for me at all!

I know a few. Definitely not made up smile I like it. Also
Are good, not top 10 Scottish boy names.

If you go on the general registry office Scotland website you can get the list of all boy names registered by year smile if you are into Scottish names this may help.

Greensleeves Fri 08-Feb-13 17:15:50

There's a MNer with a little Struan smile

I think it's adorable personally. Unusual in a good way.

LemonBreeland Fri 08-Feb-13 17:17:42

I live in Scotland and know 3 Struans, quite young boys.

emacp Fri 08-Feb-13 17:18:49

Struan Stevenson MEP is the only one I've heard of!

I'm not Scottish and know a couple also know 2 Stroan's, which English Dh says is better hmm

MechanicalTheatre Fri 08-Feb-13 17:22:14

I am Scottish and I've never heard it.

It makes me think of things being strewn around.

WowOoo Fri 08-Feb-13 17:23:41

I think it's not so nice, sorry. Honest opinion from a Welsh person who lives in England.

I can't help thinking of 'Strain'. Onomatopoeia (sp??) So.... effort, trying too hard. Not necessarily bad things.....I could change my mind. I think I have - I think it's a person who does their best, so good!

MissAnnersley Fri 08-Feb-13 17:26:32

I love the name Struan and know two. Definitely not made up.

scarlettsmummy2 Fri 08-Feb-13 17:27:16

Love it! Know one who is five and one in his fifties!

BalloonSlayer Fri 08-Feb-13 17:29:37

It reminds me of "Struth"

I can imagine it being a good name for an irritating child, so that you wouldn't have to shout in an exasperated fashion: "Struth, Johnny!!" you could just shout "Struan!!"

storytopper Fri 08-Feb-13 17:29:43

I am in Scotland, have heard of a few Struans and love it. Not too common yet. Better choice than the very popular Cameron, Calum, Finlay or Euan.

HyvaPaiva Fri 08-Feb-13 17:29:47

I'm Scottish, I know one Struan who is 30. I like it smile

emacp Fri 08-Feb-13 17:32:06

I've just been told that the Gaelic word 'sruthan', which has the same pronunciation as Struan, is the Gaelic word for streamlet or rivulet. I presume this name Struan is derived from this Gaelic word.

NowPlayingZone Fri 08-Feb-13 17:35:22

Not keen. Maybe it sounds nicer with a Scottish accent?

CheerfulYank Fri 08-Feb-13 17:37:09

I only know of it because of the MNer who has one, but I like it a lot. smile

Limelight Fri 08-Feb-13 17:43:06

I was friends with one at Uni. He was unbelievably 'cool' and so I guess I think his name by association is too!

BonaDea Fri 08-Feb-13 17:51:29

Hmmm, bit of a mixed reaction which is what I feared!

Quite like Cameron and it's not too popular down here south of the border. Although, of course, there is always the risk that people think we named him for mega-head David. wink

amck5700 Fri 08-Feb-13 17:57:02

Struan is a traditional name for my family/clan - but my OH didn't like it.

We went with Craig but he was almost Gregor. Younger son is Ciar (Keir).

Also like Grant, Innes, Kerr & Callum.

Bunbaker Fri 08-Feb-13 17:58:23

I quite like it. Is it pronounced as it is written - Strewan?

amck5700 Fri 08-Feb-13 18:00:30

yes bunbaker - but with a proper scottish rrrr grin

In my accent it goes Strrru-in - but vowels in Scotland are pretty interchangeable!

lollystix Fri 08-Feb-13 18:04:53

Like -could do it as I have Euan (and a Callumblush)

lollystix Fri 08-Feb-13 18:05:27

Oops meant couldn't - Struan and Euan not so great

Scootee Fri 08-Feb-13 18:10:14

I am with your dh. I would go for a name that is a bit more recognisable and practical.

piemistress Fri 08-Feb-13 18:11:04

I love it sadly DP vetoed it! What about Hamish, Kyle, Declan, lewis, Harris, Fergus, fergal, Campbell, liam, Lachlan, Logan, Aaron, Angus, Ross, Scott

Oscarandelliesmum Fri 08-Feb-13 18:15:01

I adore it!!!! One of my best friends is called this. Handsome, strapping Scottish fella wink

mrstowers Fri 08-Feb-13 18:33:43

Lovely Scottish name.

CotherMuckingFunt Fri 08-Feb-13 18:35:57

My friend has a Struan. I didn't 'get' it at first but now it suits him.

sweetkitty Fri 08-Feb-13 19:01:55

I know 2 wee Struans, lovely Scottish name

My DS is Struan. There are a few more I know around here (in Scotland). I still love his name and would struggle to find another Scottish name for a boy that I like as much.

MrsHuxtable Sat 09-Feb-13 19:26:04

I'm in Scotland and there's a baby Struan at toddler group. I'm not keen but DH likes it and says it's a perfectly acceptable Scottish name.

Inthesleeplessnightgarden Sat 09-Feb-13 19:48:14

I have an Angus and we're dithering between Struan and Ruaridh for no 2. Struan definitely sounds better in my Dh's Scottish accent than my very English one.

Frikadellen Sat 09-Feb-13 20:04:37

Never heard it before and not Scotish but I like it a lot. Go for it.

Selks Sat 09-Feb-13 20:27:08

Love it

Whyriskit Sat 09-Feb-13 20:30:46

Love it. I'm in Scotland, only know one. It's on my list for DC3 along with Innes and Murdo.

AThingInYourLife Sat 09-Feb-13 20:31:34

I love, love, love this name.

I'm an Irish speaker and I really like a lot of Gaelic boys' names.

I also really like Seoras (not sure if there should be an accent.)

piemistress Sat 09-Feb-13 20:41:13

I love Murdo bit again DP vetoed it sad

TheDeadlyDonkey Sat 09-Feb-13 20:44:12

Struan's a gorgeous name.

CocktailQueen Sat 09-Feb-13 20:59:48

I know a couple of Struans. Nice name, go for it!

squoosh Sat 09-Feb-13 22:00:16

Strongly dislike this name. Awful sound.

Spinaroo Sat 09-Feb-13 22:01:51
