Help - can't name ds4 - here's our shortlist....

(66 Posts)

So I have 3 boys and ds4 is due in 9 weeks....

So far I have a George, Thomas and Ollie.

We have a shortlist of names which we like but struggling to come to a decision and DH and I have different favourites.

Shortlist is:
Monty (Montague) - bit concerned that too much like a dog's name and the Monty Python connection!
Henry (DH doesn't particularly like it)
Theo (Theodore)
Edward (but couldn't use Ted as short name as with our surname would be a clothes label!)

Can't remember the other names we liked as they are on a list at home but will add on to this thread later!

Any other suggestions welcomed!

Theo or Monty

puds11isNAUGHTYnotNAICE Thu 10-Jan-13 15:14:44

Would you consider Seb or Sterling?

I really like Henry and Monty. Not a fan of Hugo or Theo and while I like Edward I do think avoidance is best if you can't have Ted as a NN.

To throw in some extra suggestions,

Christopher / Kit
Alexander / Xander

I think Henry or Edward goes best with your DS's names. Don't particularly dislike any but don't think Monty goes quite as well.

Congratulations smile

defineme Thu 10-Jan-13 15:17:15

I know lovely little boys with all those names. Discount Henry if dh doesn't like. The Edwards I know are Ed or full name so don't think Ted a problem. Monty and Hugo are, imvho, a step up in poshness from your 3 ds' names-which is fine, but something to think about. I have taught Edwards and Theos from across the social spectrum, Hugo and Monty are quite specific!

AlphaBeta2012 Thu 10-Jan-13 15:22:30

Love theo and Monty!!

Thanks all!
Can't go with Matthew, Alexander or James as 1st cousins of my boys have those names - though I also like Jago (welsh for James).
Archie I like but Archibald is quite a first name!
I had also quite wanted a different initial to other boys hence hesitation over Theo but I do like it!

SurreyWithAFringeOnTop Thu 10-Jan-13 18:33:45

Love Monty, Henry and Hugo in that order.

Theo is nice but rather popular where I am and I think it will date quite quickly.

Edward I find v dull sorry.

seeker Thu 10-Jan-13 18:35:21

Or Theodore.

But Edward.

seeker Thu 10-Jan-13 18:35:59

Or Partick. Best name ever!

sausagesandwich34 Thu 10-Jan-13 18:36:06

I think Theo is too close to Thomas

I like Hugo

seeker Thu 10-Jan-13 18:36:22

Patrick. Not Partick- that's quite different!

MerylStrop Thu 10-Jan-13 18:38:56

I think Eddie is an absolutely brilliant name but couldn't use it

Or Patrick or Hugh

I think monty sounds wonderful with your other boys names, love edward too but wouldn't use if you can't use teddy etc
Good luck!

HappyTurquoise Thu 10-Jan-13 19:21:27

They are all great names, stop worrying. Would advise that it is good to go for distinct initial for each child and adult in the household, to avoid confusion with letters/email addresses and so on. (I speak from experience.)

A lot depends on the child's character, shape, size and general behaviour, but not many children are going to not be able to carry off a name like Monty if they could carry off Hugo (makes me think of the drippy one in Vicar of Dibley) or Theo (makes me think of Brideshead for some reason). I think it's because they are less popular, dare I say uncommon names and so I haven't had those connotations challenged by getting to know a child with that name.

I have met/known a few Montys as adults, all wonderful people.

Have you thought of what his initials will be?

Hadn't thought about the initials being important for the post - but such a good point!!!!
Our surname begins with a B and yes we are checking what the initials spell!!!
The other one I like but forgot to mention is Benjamin (Ben) but my DH doesn't like alliteration!!!
If we went with Hugo what NN could we use? DH doesn't like huggy or anything similar which I have seen as NNs. Not that it is important and ds1 never has his name shortened!!
Not sure about Sterling - never come across that one before!

ShowOfHands Thu 10-Jan-13 20:19:44

When I saw your other boys' name, I immediately thought 'Benjamin'. Otherwise, I think Edward goes really well. I know Edwards who are Teddy, Ed and Ned.

Nicknames naturally evolve so I wouldn't make a choice based on what nickname you think might occur. My dc have v different nicknames to what I thought they would.

William would work.

LetUsPrey Thu 10-Jan-13 20:27:42

I was reading through the thread with a name in mind, got to the post by HenriettaChicken and saw that she beat me to it!

William is a nice name

Definitely agree with the suggestion of Patrick

From your list I like Hugo and Theodore

Mummy not particularly keen on William as a 1st name. Ds1 has it as a middle name and we want something different (which means we have ready used 9 names hence having run out of them now!)

Iris1 Thu 10-Jan-13 21:13:02

Love Edward best but I think it's nicest nn is ted/teddy.

Have you considered Frederick nn Freddie.

Benjamin is lovely but I would worry about the alliteration too.

How about Albert? I have an Oliver too and I would definitely consider Albert for another son.

Yep I like Freddie Iris good suggestion!

5madthings Thu 10-Jan-13 21:19:13

Theo or monty. I have a theo (dore) he is 13.

my othet boys are oscar reuben.
Dylan lucas and rudi arlo.

5madthings Thu 10-Jan-13 21:19:54

LemonBreeland Thu 10-Jan-13 21:22:03

Love Monty and Theo.

smother Thu 10-Jan-13 21:27:35

Sam! It's perfect with George, Thomas and Ollie. I also know a gorgeous baby Hector...

Allalonenow Thu 10-Jan-13 21:28:12

I like Theo very much, but you seem against the repeat of initial T, so I've placed it last, Hugo would be my first choice though.

sittinginthesun Thu 10-Jan-13 21:29:40

Theo or Monty.

I love Theo and Hugo.

What about Duncan? Or Francis NN Frankie.

Sheldonella Thu 10-Jan-13 21:39:05

I like:

MajesticWhine Thu 10-Jan-13 21:48:58

From your list, I really like Theo and Henry.
I love Edward too, but would be put off for the reason you gave.
Not keen on Monty or Hugo.

OctoberCarrot Thu 10-Jan-13 21:57:05

Hugo was top of our list for ds1 but is very popular where I am though I do love name and love love love theo. personallyI would avoid Edward with your surname. How about Alex? Or Jamie?

Bakingtins Thu 10-Jan-13 22:33:59

Jonathan - he could be Jonty as a NN if you liked Monty.

amck5700 Thu 10-Jan-13 23:48:54

Daniel - been said before but was first name that sprung to mind

Ham69 Fri 11-Jan-13 00:36:12

I actually love all of your choices (one's my DS's name).
For some reason, Louis came to mind. Also, have you thought about Benedict instead of Benjamin?

Clary Fri 11-Jan-13 00:51:14

OP loving your name ideas. My fave of your suggestions is Henry but if DH is not keen that;s not good. I also like Edward. Don't do alliteration, it's often a bad sign for some reason (IME anyway)

Never mind a fashion label, I see you already live with Dr Who btw grin

Ooh yes, Samuel. Lovely.

Britchic Fri 11-Jan-13 05:02:40

Hugo.... we have one and he is Hughie as a nn.
I love Sam too.... but our Sam is one of 4 in his year - ouch!!
Also like Theo from your list.
Good luck!

mathanxiety Fri 11-Jan-13 05:31:40

Hugo or Henry

Monty I like this best out of your list and think it's a good fit with your other boys.

Hugo - No, hu go
Henry (DH doesn't particularly like it) Not another one!!
Theo (Theodore) I don't like it

Edward - Eddie ?

dizzy77 Fri 11-Jan-13 05:58:52

I like Theo(dore), but I'd you're worried about clothes labels it is sometimes also shortened to Ted I am working on DH to use it if DC2 is a boy.

sleepywombat Fri 11-Jan-13 06:08:05

I love Henry

LoopsInHoops Fri 11-Jan-13 06:13:58

I like most of your list, but Freddie is great.

Not Archie. There are thousands of 3 year old Archies.

clary that made me laugh! Yes we do - so maybe I should go for a Colin to get the full setgrin

cosykins Fri 11-Jan-13 08:34:46

Hugo or Theo, both excellent names. I find Monty very 'doggy' to be honest. Congratulations!!!

SoYo Fri 11-Jan-13 09:58:39

Hi Stealth!

How come I can find all these ideas for others but cutting our list from 5 of each to one is seemingly impossible! xxx

SoYo Fri 11-Jan-13 09:59:38

Once again I've been foiled by the fact that I was only looking at page one....I'll have a quick look down to make sure you've not already excluded lots of these options and then I'll sheepishly move away!

zenoushka Fri 11-Jan-13 10:00:38

I really like Henry!

EnjoyResponsibly Fri 11-Jan-13 10:02:49

Edward nn Eddie

hoodoo12345 Fri 11-Jan-13 10:03:46

Another vote for Henry, it seems to match your others children's names the best.

Littlecherublegs Fri 11-Jan-13 12:59:38

Theo or Hugo from your list.

Though my first thought was James - goes well with your other names.

Of the George's, Thomas', and Ollie's I know, their siblings are:

Or, how about:

(sorry for any repeats!)

Twinklestarstwinklestars Fri 11-Jan-13 13:06:55

I have a Thomas and an ollie, if dc3 is a boy I like the name Max.

Mosman Sat 12-Jan-13 07:09:35
