I quite like it, think it's much prettier than Ethel. Very different in style though. From Dickensian to Hitchcockian.

She must be on MN though, I'm sure I've seen threads on that name in the last few months.

Congratulations Lil! waves

Bearandcub Thu 10-Jan-13 01:36:46

I like it.

LPplusOne Thu 10-Jan-13 01:39:31

Sweeter than Ethel. And a brilliant film, too!

Porkster Thu 10-Jan-13 01:40:26

Love it.

Booyhoo Thu 10-Jan-13 01:42:39

ooh marnie! i like it!

congrats lily if you're around! grin

BananaHammocks Thu 10-Jan-13 06:17:48

They are quite a different style, Marnie's a lot more popular than Ethel too.

Middle name Rose seems a bit unimaginative but I guess as it's Lily's middle name.

Is Marnie usually short for something? Just doesn't feel like a full name.

InNeedOfBrandy Thu 10-Jan-13 06:32:03

There's a marnie at work, lovely name.

I love it. It can be a nn for Marina, which I also love.

ripsishere Thu 10-Jan-13 06:57:23

Horrible name (sorry Lily if you are reading). Ethel is much better.
Marnie sounds unfinished or like marmite.

monica77798 Thu 10-Jan-13 09:38:07

I quite like Marnie, I have not heard this name before!

Piffpaffpoff Thu 10-Jan-13 09:39:06

I love it, always have.

I quite like it. Ethel is awful though, sounds like a decrepit old lady, or a chicken.

CremeEggThief Thu 10-Jan-13 09:40:36

Much nicer than Ethel. Wasn't it originally a nickname for Margaret?

Wallison Thu 10-Jan-13 09:42:40

What a lovely name. I thought it was short for Marianne?

I like it and I like Ethel too.

Marnie is also what Tom Ellis and Tamzin Outhwaite named their second daughter a while back.

perceptionreality Thu 10-Jan-13 11:58:33

Marnie is quite a stylish name imo - Ethel I just don't get!

Mosman Thu 10-Jan-13 12:02:19

Not bad

SamSmalaidh Thu 10-Jan-13 12:05:37

I love Marnie, it's definitely getting more popular. There was an actress called Marnie something on Neighbours when I was a child (she played Debbie) so I thought it was very cool grin

ethelb Thu 10-Jan-13 12:06:44

what's wrong with ethel?

AThingInYourLife Thu 10-Jan-13 12:09:38

Lily Allen's daughter is called Ethel.

We just found this out last month, a few weeks after she was born.

There is no way there has been time for another baby.

<checks calendar, is shocked to realise 90 are over>

Tamzin Outhwaite is married to Tom Ellis? envy

MyLastDuchess Thu 10-Jan-13 12:12:41

I have to laugh - being Australian it is very dated to the early '70s. I was almost a Marnie but luckily for me one of my mother's friends used the name for her own DD first.

I'm sure it's a lovely name but it's just the association it has for me.

bahana Thu 10-Jan-13 12:17:37

Lovely. If you like naming your daughter after a frigid kleptomaniac with a disturbed past who is raped by Sean Connery to 'cure' her.

havingastress Thu 10-Jan-13 12:21:02

She's stolen the name I was saving for my second child!!! GUTTED!!! Now if I use it, it will look like I'm being all celeb-y! Damn damn damn!

MulledWineAndScully Thu 10-Jan-13 12:25:11

Marnie Facts:

1) In the 1990s, Marnie Reece-Wilmore played the part of Debbie Martin in "Neighbours", annoying DSis of the even more annoying Hannah Martin and DGD of Helen Daniels

2) This is the only time I have ever heard the name Marnie, prior to today.

itsmineitsmine Thu 10-Jan-13 12:29:43

Arrrgh! Mulledwine - Hannah Martin AKA Button!!!

Pasiphae Thu 10-Jan-13 12:30:55

Absolutely great! Ethel and Marnie is a great combination.
Love the retro vibe.

Thumbwitch Thu 10-Jan-13 12:32:24

There is a Marnie in DS1's dance class. She's 5, but also Australian.
I'm not keen - sounds a bit too close to "mardy" for me - but it's ok.

bruffin Thu 10-Jan-13 12:36:47

Ethel is 14 months old, new baby born on 8th Jan.

AThingInYourLife - yes she is. Jammy bitch!

EbbNFlow Thu 10-Jan-13 13:00:16

Not to my taste, but then neither was Ethel.

Congrats to her, though!

atthewelles Thu 10-Jan-13 13:16:00

I didn't even know she was pregnant.

Marnie is quite nice but a totally different style to Ethel. I would have expected her to be called something like Mabel or Ruthie. (Actually, Ruthie's quite nice!)

zippey Thu 10-Jan-13 13:20:36

Our baby is called Ethel, named before Lilly Allen had her baby. I quite like Marnie, its nice.

everlong Thu 10-Jan-13 14:22:29

Quite cute.

better than Ethel

Whyriskit Thu 10-Jan-13 14:34:58

That was on my list for DC3. I'll look like I'm a sleb stalker if I use it now. Used to work with a Marnie and she was lovely.

iheartmycat Thu 10-Jan-13 15:00:29

If i was Ethel, i'd be very jealous that my sister got a much better name ;) I thnk Marnie is quite cute!

But even if she'd called her Foofoolullabella, I'd just be happy for her that she's had another healthy baby, after losing the first two smile

PickledInAPearTree Thu 10-Jan-13 15:01:28

Lovely name happy news!

mynameis Thu 10-Jan-13 15:05:13

Obviously far prefer it to Ethel but Marnie was the annoying witch in last seasons True Blood so puts me off for that <shallow> reason grin

thegreylady Thu 10-Jan-13 15:54:56

I like it -there is a lovely children's book [forget author] called 'When Marnie was Here' a ghost story of a sort for 10 to 14 yr olds I think.

squoosh Thu 10-Jan-13 15:55:15

Loved that book.

threepiecesuite Thu 10-Jan-13 15:58:32

Ahem. There is a Marnie in my class. Her parents chose it so they could say 'Our Marnie' and it would sound designer-y. You'll have to imagine the nasal high pitched Scouse accent.

MrsBungleBear Thu 10-Jan-13 16:00:12

Totally agree with Iheartmycat Marnie is a nice name, if I was called Ethel and my parents then called my sister Marnie I would be very envy

MyLastDuchess - yes my exact thought very 70s Australian I went to school with quite a few Marnies. Saying that I still like it.

Ahem. Marnie isn't short for anything, unless you are Del Boy Trotter and referring to Boycie's wife, Marlene.

DitzyDonkeySillyMonkey Thu 10-Jan-13 17:33:36

Oh there was a thread about the name Marnie in November I wonder is lily a mumsnetter!

Onezerozero Thu 10-Jan-13 17:45:25

Marnie was my top choice girl name but I'm having a boy.
I wonder what she was going to call her baby if it was a boy. I am stuck.

lollypopsicle Thu 10-Jan-13 18:03:59

...but it rhymes with sarnie! hmm

EwanHoozami Thu 10-Jan-13 18:10:37

They're both gorgeous names. Congrats, Lils wink

FellatioNels0n Thu 10-Jan-13 18:12:52

I have been backing Marnie for a comeback for a couple of years now. I feel smug! It will go stratospheric after this. Just like Ethel didn't.

JustFabulous Thu 10-Jan-13 18:16:17

It is rather rude to say a name is awful when it has been stated that it is possibly LC posts on here. Having said that, she probably doesn't care what a bunch of strangers think. I am happy for the family the baby has arrived safely.

Narked Thu 10-Jan-13 18:17:14

It makes me think of that vile film.

lottiegarbanzo Thu 10-Jan-13 18:21:15

Maybe she'd been watching 'The Hour'. There was a very chic but unhappy Marnie in that.

pictish Thu 10-Jan-13 18:21:30

It's ok. It doesn't put me up nor down.

I went off Lily Allen after watching a documentary about her and her sister trying to set up a vintage dress hire company together.

I always thought of her as a funny, down to earth sort of woman. She isn't. She's spoiled, entitled and a diva.

Cba with her at all.

I think it's rude to say a name is horrible when some of your fellow MNers might actually be called that name <cries self to sleep, fills in deed poll form>

JustFabulous Thu 10-Jan-13 18:52:00

<sends comforting blanket, bars of chocolate and a cheese hamper to Chickens>

<sniff> Thanks, Fab <cuffs it>

Bowlersarm Thu 10-Jan-13 20:20:49

Ds3 was going to be Marnie and he's now 12. We would have used it as a shortened version of Marina. Still really like it

iclaudius Thu 10-Jan-13 21:45:26

pictish - i rather warmed to her during that documentary actually and thought id get on great guns with her

seeing as how i'm a gregarious popular and vibrant person that's saying something wink

re the name hmmm Marnie feels a wee bit unfinished but don't mind it - like Ethel but the two do not gel

banterbus Thu 10-Jan-13 22:18:55

I had also intended to call my future ds marnie and was so gutted when I saw this news today! I think it will get very popular now which might put me off using it :-(

MerylStrop Thu 10-Jan-13 22:20:43

what bahana said....

2kidsintow Thu 10-Jan-13 22:22:25

Marnie was the character in my favourite book of all time (when I was a little girl). From the book "When Marnie was there."

I like it.

ZPRB Thu 10-Jan-13 23:21:14

Tis my name (right down to the middle name too!) & one of my daughters is Lily - coincidence ;)

sparklechops Thu 10-Jan-13 23:27:59

I love, love, love Marnie. Have been trying to introduce it as a nn for Dd who has one of the longer names upthread....hhmm, don't wanna be seen as a sleb copier. But it's soooo nice. Well done, Lily, if you are reading!

UterusUterusGhaLaLaLaLaLi Thu 10-Jan-13 23:30:10

I love Ethel. I really wanted to call dd this (Pre lily), but her dad vetoed it. Nearly went for effie instead. Wish I had tbh.

mathanxiety Fri 11-Jan-13 05:40:47

Of the two I actually prefer Ethel. Marnie is horrible.
