I was thinking Malcolm for my son. He would be Malcolm Grant. Is this name posh, do you think? smile

JiltedJohnsJulie Tue 11-Dec-12 23:17:03

Wouldn't it cause confusion?

Mollydoggerson Tue 11-Dec-12 23:24:31

Mal Grant. It sounds like being refused a grant.

I think Grant is a great surname and suits alot of first names. I'm not keen on Malcolm.

It is neither posh nor not posh to my eyes and ears.

louisianablue2000 Tue 11-Dec-12 23:27:33

If you want posh then go for something like Ptolemy. Malcolm is a good name but not especially posh (I'd say it was respectable, definitely passes the lawyer test).

JiltedJohnsJulie Tue 11-Dec-12 23:28:44

Just think it would be a bit odd having 2 Malcolm grants in the house.

GW297 Tue 11-Dec-12 23:41:09

I was going to say Ptolemy! Also Rupert springs to mind.

LineRunner Tue 11-Dec-12 23:48:01

Rupert Grant. Kinda works.

rachel234 Wed 12-Dec-12 06:49:16

I think Malcolm is fine. Or how about
Theodore Grant
Caspar Grant
Magnus Grant
Sebastian Grant
Miles Grant

rachel234 Wed 12-Dec-12 06:50:50

I'm not keen on the Pt part of Ptolemy. There are far nicer posh names imo.

BellaOfTheBalls Wed 12-Dec-12 06:57:20

Isn't Rupert Grant Ron Weasley? grin

And I wouldn't say Malcolm was posh. My uncle is Malcolm and he's definitely not posh.

Hugo (maybe not with Grant as a surname actually smile)
Jolyon
Stellan
Ivo
Cosmo
Magnus

Like them both but I'm not posh enough!

Why are you obsessed with having a posh name confused

Bit weird IMO and definitely not posh either

The only Malcolm I know is a nice, but rather dull chap.

I don't think it is a posh name.

The poshest person I was at university with was an OE called Humphrey. Awfully nice chap. Looked a bit like a young Nigel Havers. This was some time ago!!

"a lot of these are dogs names, apart from Malcolm "
Really? Most dogs round here are called Rufus, Fido, Rex and Oscar!

I think what people mean with 'posh' names are simply classic, elegant underused names, the opposite of 'chav' names.

I'm not keen on the Mal part of Malcolm, but I love Magnus, Maxim or Monty. Or how about Caspian, Fabian or Tristan?

OwlLady Wed 12-Dec-12 12:13:01

see I know a dogs called Magnus and Monty as well! grin

I do live ina naice area though wink my poor dog (who is spayed thank god) was rathe enthusiastically humped by a dalmation called Hugo confused she was really not impressed

I wouldn't say Malcolm was posh. If you want a posh name, how about Ambrose? Or are you trying to avoid one?

shoobidoo Wed 12-Dec-12 13:40:06

What does 'posh' mean nowadays? If it means classic, elegant and underused then how about these:

Marcus
Sebastian
Tristan
Quentin
Reuben
Vincent
Clement

Nowadays there are so many different names around that the old stereotypes aren't really relevant imo.

Tarquin

I've never met a dog called Ptolemy.

louisianablue2000 Sun 16-Dec-12 18:44:08

I'm liking that Magnus is considered posh. Go to Orkney and you might change your mind once you've seen a few Mansies being thrown out of the pub.

1978andallthat Mon 17-Dec-12 19:49:32

Malcolm is a great and underused name and not posh

BikeRunSki Mon 17-Dec-12 19:59:22

Really posh boys are always called something like Jumbo or Biff.

Leafmould Mon 17-Dec-12 20:30:04

There is a guy on my estate called jumbo. He is NOT posh.

I think it is hard to say wether a name is posh or not. I know a Malcolm who is nice but not posh.

maxmillie Mon 17-Dec-12 20:33:13

Malcolm is a late middle-aged middle manager in an office name surely?

ToffeeCaramel Mon 17-Dec-12 21:41:01

Fabian is a fab posh name

RyleDup Mon 17-Dec-12 21:47:58

Hamilton
Julian
Nicholas

Ninjacat Mon 17-Dec-12 21:49:15

Rafe

shoobidoo Mon 17-Dec-12 22:25:26

Jumbo or Biff shock. Don't think they're posh at all, they're awful...

Agree about Fabian and Julian - great names!

TwoFacedCows Mon 17-Dec-12 22:31:49

i am torn between Ptolemy and Tarquin. LOVE them both!

GW297 Mon 17-Dec-12 22:36:42

maxmillie - I agree! Isn't Biff Elizabeth?

iclaudius Mon 17-Dec-12 22:39:57

i just love Tarquin and would have called ds6 such - had friends not frowned so

amck5700 Mon 17-Dec-12 23:09:38

Crispin

pinkyredrose Mon 17-Dec-12 23:12:33
