Not thinking of using it, but just stumbled across it and would be interested in what you think.

I'm in the vein of Oberon not Haggard

Well you'll be glad to hear that my first thought was Oberon! grin at Haggard!

I like it. But I love all old-school movie star names smile

I don't know that my Oberon link worked, but worth another as she's just so beautiful

aPirateInaPearTree Fri 07-Dec-12 21:40:32

love Merle

First thing I thought upon reading your title was "Oberon"! I have no idea who the other one is.

It's not my style (I like long names) but there is something about it. Do you have a good surname? Merle Oberon is quite a name!

It's a bit hypothetical as i think I've maybe possibly hopefully landed on something for DD2 and I could not offer her the kind of compelling surname of which Ms Oberon was able to avail herself. But there is, I think, something about it - even though it's not really my naming style either

It means blackbird in French, if that makes a difference.

I know a merle, she's very pretty and is in her 20's.

Did you know that Merle Oberon's real name was Queenie Thompson? My granny was in her class at school in India and apparently the nuns used to call her 'Quinine Thompson' because she was 'a bitter sort of girl'. Not relevant to your decision of course but love that story and don't know many people who have heard of her. grin

It immediately made me think of Merle from the Walking Dead!

Thumbwitch Sat 08-Dec-12 12:23:35

I also thought Oberon straight away - nice name.

Notnow - that's a great story!

PrettyPirate Sat 08-Dec-12 13:22:04

My cousin is called Merle but she's Estonian and it's very common name there. I like the name.

squoosh Sat 08-Dec-12 16:22:45

I know a little Merle. She's gorgeous, the name has good associations for me.

MolotovCocktail Sat 08-Dec-12 17:40:38

Another one here who thought of Merle from The Walkig Dead ... erm, a 'no' from me!

AlwaysHoldingOnToStarbug Sat 08-Dec-12 20:07:49

I like it. I thought of Oberon, though I've never seen any of her films.

FloellaDaVille Sat 08-Dec-12 20:11:01

I have a merle border collie. It means a grey/blue colour in dogs. He's called Spooky because his eyes are weird colours. Have never heard of it as a girl's name.

I was at school with someone whose little sister was called Merle. Sadly she died suddenly in late teens/early twenties so could never use that name without that association.

ArthurandGeorge Sat 08-Dec-12 21:04:13

I think it's very pretty.

serin Sat 08-Dec-12 22:35:54

My first thought was border collie!

SomersetONeil Sun 09-Dec-12 04:42:35

My first thought was Oberon - it's a lovely name.

Merle is a coat pattern, not a coat colour You can have red merle, for instance. Not just the more common blue.

However, Merle to me is the violent redneck in the Walking Dead or Haggard. So it's a no from me.

manicinsomniac Sun 09-Dec-12 09:24:10

It's my cousin's middle name but he's a man. I've never heard it on a girl. Pretty name though.

GlaikitFizzogTheChristmasElf Sun 09-Dec-12 09:38:36

I know a merle, I've always thought it was a lovely and unusual name. She has issues with people pronouncing it wrong though. Meh-Rhyl rather than merrrrlllllll. Iykwim.

MyLastDuchess Sun 09-Dec-12 15:00:48

My year 7 teacher's first name was Merle. I like it.

AuntieShirley Mon 10-Dec-12 20:12:57

I used to work with a Merle. I really like it. She was a really fab woman.
I would us eit but I have a 7 year old Pearl so would be weird grin

Rhubarbgarden Mon 10-Dec-12 21:40:29

I know a male one.

12ylnon Tue 11-Dec-12 10:41:22

Sorry, but Merle just reminds me of The Walking Dead. The Merle in that is a racist hick- not really a great namesake!

MissCellania Tue 11-Dec-12 10:43:50

another "man in walking dead" immediate thought here. I thought it was a boys name anyway, and its ugly sounding.
