Our surname is very difficult and starts with the letter 'U' (as my username might suggest!). I think this means that names we really love with vowels at the end (Milo, Arlo, Ivo) are out of the question but would love to hear thoughts on that. Other than that, we have:

Arthur (Artie)
Albert (Bertie)
Wilfrid (Wilf)
Otis (DH loves, i'm not sure I have the nerve!)

We were decided on Felix for quite a while until it was noted at my baby shower that his initials would be FU!

Thanks in advance x

BodyOfEeyore Fri 07-Dec-12 18:36:39

Arthur is the best of the bunch.

DewDr0p Fri 07-Dec-12 18:38:03

Like Arthur and Bertie best. Not so keen on Wilf.

Otis might be a grower grin

LynetteScavo Fri 07-Dec-12 18:39:42

Otis
Albert
Wilfred
Arthur

I know a child Otis, he's great!

I think you can have an o next to U. Milo Underwood for example is fine.

howcomes Fri 07-Dec-12 18:40:39

Otis or Wilfred, there was a Wolfred at ds swim class last year

BarbieDahl Fri 07-Dec-12 18:40:53

Arthur and Albert are also favourites for baby Cambridge
Don't like Wilf
Otis is ok
Love Felix, shame about FU

VickyU Fri 07-Dec-12 18:44:28

Thanks so much everyone. Lynette - the problem with our surname is that the U is pronounced 'ewe' if that makes sense rather than 'Uh' as in Underwood!

CarlingBlackMabel Fri 07-Dec-12 18:47:35

All lovely names smile

Geranium3 Fri 07-Dec-12 18:48:44

bertie

chesterton2 Fri 07-Dec-12 19:03:15

I love all of them

I love all of them. Bertie & Arthur are my favourites smile.

HDee Fri 07-Dec-12 19:21:06

Otis isn't too awful, the other names are shit.

VickyU Fri 07-Dec-12 19:25:28

Thanks so much for all of your opinions. Good and bad! it's so difficult isn't it as its so subjective but really great to hear what people think.

StrawberryMojito Fri 07-Dec-12 19:32:13

Otis is my favourite out of your list. In fact, I am surprised you consider it to be the risk choice.

ArtigeneAuberchoke Fri 07-Dec-12 19:36:45

I think you can have a name finishing 'o' with a 'ewe' surname. For example Arlo Yewtree sounds fine. I love Ivor shortened to Ivo, would that work? All your other names are ok although I don't personally like Otis.

FriggFRIGG Fri 07-Dec-12 20:33:03

I have an Arlo,Best Name Ever wink

I think o U names would be fine really....

Arlo Ulysse
Ivo Ulysse
Milo Ulysse

Ivor Ulysse is an option perhaps? Shortened to Ivo?

Also like Bertie and Artie. smile

katiecubs Fri 07-Dec-12 22:43:19

Arthur.

I have a Felix though and love that more!

IwishyouaMerryChristmas Fri 07-Dec-12 22:45:30

Otis makes me think of lifts.

Bertie and Wilf are my favourites from your list.

Slothlorien Fri 07-Dec-12 22:46:41

Great names. smile

forgetmenots Sat 08-Dec-12 00:46:10

Love Milo and Arlo, and I think they are fine with a U surname, just not an O!

Like Bertie and Arthur, also like Archie if that makes it less Royal-potential! Not keen on Wilfrid, and Otis I like but it sounds like a young name to me, not sure if it would grow with him?... Good list, though, like your style.

PearlyWhites Sat 08-Dec-12 12:24:45

Felixs reminds me if a cat

StockingFilly Sat 08-Dec-12 12:27:47

Love Otis. Arthur is sweet.

Wilfred is foul and try-hard.

scottishmummy Sat 08-Dec-12 12:28:27

the nickname diminutives I don't like,too cutesy
like all the names
but Otis I like best

natsmum100 Sun 09-Dec-12 14:12:09

Agree with other posters - names ending with o would go with surname beginning with U. Names ending with consonants may run into surname.

banterbus Mon 10-Dec-12 22:05:07

love the name Otis!

runningforme Mon 10-Dec-12 22:34:21

Otis - the rest are waaay too old man

VickyU Tue 11-Dec-12 01:13:06

Thanks so much everyone. So useful to read everyone's responses while I'm sitting here with 3rd trimester insomnia! It sounds like Otis and Arthur are the overall favourites at the moment.

persephoneplum Tue 11-Dec-12 04:50:27

I have a friend who just had a baby Arthur yesterday (Artie) and I have a Felix! A great shame about the FU thing sad

conorsrockers Tue 11-Dec-12 07:36:13

Otis is a great name. But I'm biased - it's one of my DS middle names!

SantaBearface Tue 11-Dec-12 09:13:48

I think Wilfred is lovely. It can be shortened to Wil or Wilf and reminds me of Wilfred Owen, who was great and a national treasure. Owen is also a nice name for a boy, but it might be quite popular along the Michael Owen lines, which may encourage some or put others off . . .

emmyloo2 Thu 13-Dec-12 02:42:15

"Otis isn't too awful, the other names are shit."

What a helpful comment? And what fabulous names have you bestowed on your children might I ask?

OP - I like them all and Arthur, Albert and Felix are all on my list if this DC2 is a boy.

I like Felix and Arthur the best by far, followed by Albert. Otis is a bit out there for me and the only one I don't really like is Wilfred. I fear he may get beaten in the playground with a name like that.

HDee Thu 13-Dec-12 06:48:12

emmyloo, I wasn't aware that posts on mumsnet had to pass a 'helpful' test.

My children are named Tyler, Shannon, Lexi-Lou-May, and Kenny Penny.

Sirzy Thu 13-Dec-12 06:51:42

I like all on your shortlist other than Otis

NAR4 Thu 13-Dec-12 14:38:54

Arthur and Albert are both lovely. I know someone with a dog called Otis, so that instantly puts me off that name. Its also the name of the dog in Garfield.

ILikeToHoHoHo Thu 13-Dec-12 14:44:29

Lol @ Kenny Penny

I think all of the names are lovely smile, and I'm not being polite I really do think they're nice. If I don't like names mentioned I just don't comment on them.

VickyU Thu 13-Dec-12 17:06:46

Oh emmylou2 its so lovely when people you have never met stand up for you on mumsnet! Thank you so much for your advice. I try not to get upset when people are rude because I guess, at the end of the day, I am asking for opinions and all that! But, then again, even though HDee is right that posts on mumsnet don't have to pass a 'helpful' test, I think most of us agree that we are all trying to help each other or ask for help and thats kind of the reason we're all on this website!

Anyway, thank you to all. I'm pretty sure we are going to go with Arthur smile

emmyloo2 Fri 14-Dec-12 07:41:02

HDee - how funny! All your names are on my short-list. I particularly like Lexi-Lou-May. wink

emmyloo2 Fri 14-Dec-12 07:42:29

and OP - Arthur is top of my list is this baby is another boy.

I adore it! My other two choices are Felix and Hugo....

EugenesAxeChoppedDownANiceTree Fri 14-Dec-12 07:49:58

I like all but Wilfred the best. I know a young Wilf with lovely parents. It has a special place in my heart too, as it's how DS mispronounces 'wolf'. It's a wo thing... he says 'wirrld' too.

EugenesAxeChoppedDownANiceTree Fri 14-Dec-12 07:54:43

Odie is the dog in Garfield, BTW. I think with the 'U' surname Otis would work well.

Bear in mind that Arthur is very popular at the moment - it doesn't really matter but he could be one of many.

I have a Wilf(red) so am very biased..........wink Pics on my profile.
