Name ideas for a baby, p'raps, Mary?

Admittedly we have three months left, but we've got nothing!

Obstreperous Sat 01-Dec-12 11:20:25

And everyone's rightly laughed at my last two suggestions.

Any names jumping out at you OP?

MaryChristmaZEverybody Sat 01-Dec-12 11:44:17

I did guess that Obstreperous wink. But I was wondering why those requirements. I was trying to think of a surname that needed an n before it, or whether you were trying to match a girl's name you already had, or something.

Maybe you already have six girls called Jordan, Lauren, Kaylin, Ashton, Dyllynn (apparently exists shock) and Robin [hopeful]

Obstreperous Sat 01-Dec-12 12:22:17

Oops - I had an irony bypass recently so I may be a little slow on the uptake.

Basically we have a ridiculously long double-barrelled surname and forrin connections which means we have to avoid too many consonants. We have one older DS (sadly not rhyming!) whose name ends in an -a sound. We need to avoid those ending in an -o sound because of our surname.

So I thought two syllables with an -n ending might work...

Obstreperous Sat 01-Dec-12 12:26:25

I quite like Leon, but DS1's name is so wildly popular that I thought it might be nice to go for something a little more unusual. Which is why I recently suggested Conan to DH...but everyone's laughed at that!

MaryChristmaZEverybody Sat 01-Dec-12 12:27:45

That's ok smile. You really didn't have to explain, I was just being nosy.

It's difficult this naming business, especially if you have a very common/very unusual or very long/short surname.

We ruled out a lot of names because of the surname. And ended up with all two syllable names by coincidence.

stuffitunderthebed Sat 01-Dec-12 12:28:20

Byron?

MaryChristmaZEverybody Sat 01-Dec-12 12:28:25

If you like Conan, what about Conal? I know it doesn't end in n, but it might do.

Nice for a name though.

Obstreperous Sat 01-Dec-12 13:00:35

How is Ioan pronounced?

It's a fecking nightmare, this naming business! had a perfect girl's name lined up, but 'twas not to be.

Obstreperous Sat 01-Dec-12 13:01:37

CheeseStrawWars Sat 01-Dec-12 13:34:59

The Ioan I know is "yo-an". Rohan was nicked by J.R.R. Tolkein but is originally a name of Indian or French origin, I think.

MaryChristmaZEverybody Sat 01-Dec-12 13:36:13

There are two versions of Rohan. The Indian version is Row-han, the Irish version is pronounced Row-un and means red-headed I think.

I prefer it spelled Rohan for a boy - Rowan written down would make me think girl.

I always thought Ioan was Eye-an (is it Welsh). Or is that Ieuan, as in Ieuan Evans the rugby player. Or is it Yay-un?

Euan is Scottish, Eunan is Irish. I quite like them all. They are nicer than Owen (or Eoghan or Eoin) which are all much more popular.

I suppose it would depend where you come from which spelling and corresponding pronunciation you would use.

BabysPointlessPocket Sat 01-Dec-12 13:36:47

I have a ds with a two syllable name ending with n, but It's so rare, it would out me, there is only one other in uk (but popular in Poland and strangely, Hawaii too). Will pm you if I can figure out how to do it on my phone.

uptomyeyes Sat 01-Dec-12 21:47:11

My DS1 is Osian (Osh-an), known as Osh to everyone. I think its a fab name - cool, but has a great meaning. Osian was a celtic prince and a poet, who married Nia pen Aur ( Nia with the golden hair). They went off to live in Tir Na Nog (land of eternal Youth) and had various other adventures.

I'm happy to share it around smile

Taran = \t(a)-ran\ as a boy's name (also used as girl's name Taran), is of Gaelic origin, and the meaning of Taran is "thunder". Lloyd Alexander gave the name to his main character and heroine a series of children's books based on Gaelic mythology.
