...pn eye-oh-nah?

Hassled Mon 26-Nov-12 22:08:56

I love it. I think you'd have to be Scottish though - or at least some Scottish ancestry.

beautyguru Mon 26-Nov-12 22:09:50

Love it, used to look after a beautiful little girl called Iona when I was a nursery nurse and have loved it ever since. So pretty smile

RancerDoo Mon 26-Nov-12 22:12:30

Ok, but you have to check it doesn't run into your last name (even if your last name isn't a noun but sounds as if it could be one):

Iona Bentley (see what I mean?)
Iona Mole (adrian's next child)
Iona Biggun (Prob not)

Iona Richardson - fine.

KatyAnn28 Mon 26-Nov-12 22:13:04

It's not the sort of name I'd normally go for but it caught my eye today and DH and I really like it. I have no scottish ancestry but he does on his side wink

KatyAnn28 Mon 26-Nov-12 22:14:10

Hadn't thought of that RancerDoo! Luckily ours would be ok smile

Slainte Mon 26-Nov-12 22:15:34

Love, love, love it. Strong yet feminine.

baskingseals Mon 26-Nov-12 22:15:41

i really like Iona. i have one in my family, and always think what a beautiful name it is.

MrsSpencerReid Mon 26-Nov-12 22:16:08

Love it but had to discount it due to our surname, think 'Iona Chair' grin

BikeRunSki Mon 26-Nov-12 22:18:05

Love it.
Go on holiday to Iona, have a lovely time and then you'll have connections with it!

SurreyWithAFringeOnTop Mon 26-Nov-12 22:18:42

Being Welsh, I would pronounce it Yona - the Scottish pronunciation sounds really weird to me, though I do like it. But unless you live in Wales then this would not be an issue for you!

SomersetONeil Mon 26-Nov-12 22:49:56

Beautiful name - classic, strong, elegant and that rare thing when it comes to names: timeless. You'd never know how old an Iona is. smile

I don't think you need a Scottish connection for Iona any more than you would for Isla or Isobel.

Go for it.

StepfordWannabe Mon 26-Nov-12 22:55:23

Is it not an island off GB somewhere? I don't like place-names as names IYSWIM, it would be like calling a child Guernsey or Shetland or Achill. If it wasn't an actual place, it would be very pretty - not a very helpful comment I know!

ConfusedandBemused Mon 26-Nov-12 22:56:05

Really beautiful

tudorrose Mon 26-Nov-12 23:03:19

I have one! I love love love it, mine is feisty, strong willed and beautiful, (think Merida in Brave) and her name suits her perfectly. Its a fab name.

Go for it!

pictish Mon 26-Nov-12 23:05:22

It's gorgeous. But then I am an Iona. wink

LittlemissChristmas Tue 27-Nov-12 08:01:25

I love it smile

persephoneplum Tue 27-Nov-12 08:29:45

I like it a lot but I prefer Io and Ione.

EugenesAxe Tue 27-Nov-12 08:33:38

Scottish Island? I like it as a name.

MolotovCocktail Tue 27-Nov-12 08:55:14

Its gorgeous. For some reason, it makes me think of the sunrise. I also like Iola (eye-oh-la) and Isla/Ayla.

Felicitywascold Tue 27-Nov-12 08:58:16

It's gorgeous, timeless and classic.

But teaching one with a noun surname did put me off rather think - 'Iona Ball' <it was actually slightly worse than that but I can't name it and get sacked...>

hjtunny Tue 27-Nov-12 18:17:49

I've just added it to my list, very pretty!

BikeRunSki Tue 27-Nov-12 19:24:47

It is a Scttish Island, in the Inner Hebredies off the west coast of Scotland. It is beautiful, and is important in the history of early Christianity in Britain.

phlebas Tue 27-Nov-12 21:09:18

I love it too, though the 'Iona's I know also pronounce it Yona so that would be my initial expectation smile

Rhubarbgarden Tue 27-Nov-12 21:20:26

Pretty

WeaselSoup Tue 27-Nov-12 21:25:04

I absolutely love it! It is definitely one of my favourite names.

Sorry for the hijack OP, but while we're on the subject of the name, do y'all think it would work with my surname, which is Pugh? Does Iona Pugh work?

WeaselSoup Tue 27-Nov-12 21:25:45

Pronouncing it eye-oh-na rather than yo-na

Benaberry Wed 28-Nov-12 15:29:50

I love it. However, likelihood of me ever using it for a dc is pretty much 0 (so I used it on the Labrador instead!)

YouCanBe Wed 28-Nov-12 16:48:27

It is a beautiful name!

SimplyCupcakes Mon 20-May-13 18:27:40

I often get comments on what a pretty name it is, especially as I have to wear a name badge at work! Go for it! and the Island is remote, rugged and stunning!

Bowlersarm Mon 20-May-13 18:28:47

I love it. I wouldn't say you have to be Scottish to use it. It's very pretty.

GaryBuseysTeeth Mon 20-May-13 18:45:44

Gorgeous name!

miffybun73 Mon 20-May-13 18:51:11

Lovely smile

MadameJosephine Mon 20-May-13 18:55:22

Gorgeous! Definitely on our list if we ever have anotherDD

Dinosaurhunter Mon 20-May-13 19:05:47

Lovely I know a family with a Iona , islay and Isobel .

TallulahBetty Mon 20-May-13 19:06:52

Like it. I don't agree you'd need to be Scottish.

badguider Mon 20-May-13 19:08:35

I like it, it's semi-popular here (lowland scotland) but my DH wont' use any 'island' name:
lewis
harris
iona
skye
isla
ailsa
etc.
Don't know why, but he won't even consider them.

Weegiemum Mon 20-May-13 19:12:58

A similar island name I like is Rhona/Rona.

Iona pretty popular here, though that might be because my dc go to a Gaelic speakingschool!

bettycoast Mon 20-May-13 19:14:58

I've known a few, and they have all been as enchanting as the island.

Iona is one of the best places on the face of the earth. Between the se and the sky and the feeling of being away - I adore it. Nice name too grin

look and look

Love it! Would be high on a girls name list for me but DH hates it!

BNmum Mon 20-May-13 20:26:39

It's a lovely name, I like it a lot. I would assume there was some Scottish ancestry but at the same time wouldn't think it odd if you told me there wasn't. Go for it!

Decoy Mon 20-May-13 21:14:42

Lovely name. And far ess overdone than Isla.

Decoy Mon 20-May-13 21:14:50

less not ess!!

moanymandy Tue 21-May-13 11:52:43
