Phaedra...

Thoughts?

As in fay-dra?

Hmm not sure, I don't hate it. I would probably say pardon if someone introduced them selves as I've not heard it before.

It's a bit like vader, so would have the earth vader theme running through my head!

Is that any help at all?? <gets splinters from fence>

MotherfuckingMorrisMan Sun 11-Nov-12 16:41:55

I like classical names, but if my memory is correct doesn't Phaedre have unfortunate connotations?

FriggFRIGG Sun 11-Nov-12 16:44:46

Thanks Glakit ...umm,yeah...helpful...

Y'see I have a list of names,it's a very long list...full of gorgeous names I've heard and jotted down.
I asked DP to have a squiz, and he's decided Phaedra is his favorite name, but I'm,Urm...on the fence...

How is it pronounced?

FriggFRIGG Sun 11-Nov-12 16:45:31

Not particualy I don't think...well,maybe a bit ...

FriggFRIGG Sun 11-Nov-12 16:46:16

It's pronounced how Glakit guessed,

Fay-drah

Happ to help! And I meant darth vader, just incase you didn't know!

Is it fedra? It's what wiki says but I don't trust it!

amarylisnightandday Sun 11-Nov-12 16:48:22

I love it - it wax on my short list. Dd1 had a nursery nurse when she was a baby called Phaedra and I (and dd1) utterly love her - soy h so that I've already requested her for dd2 - no one else is good enough grin

I told her how fan her name is - she laugh at me because her siblings are called really generic names - her parents went on holiday to Greece and heard the name Phaedra and chose it for her.

If dd1 wasn't so fixated on a particular name I'd still keep Phaedra as a possibility I thi k it's just lovely and v classy.

FriggFRIGG Sun 11-Nov-12 16:49:03

Yeah,I got the Darth bit...

Fedra??

Ha Glaikit 1 -wiki 0

I would present dh with a much shorter list. After doing the shouting test of "Phaedra your teas ready" and if I can't see myself shouting it score it off the list. DHs can't be trusted with names! At least my dh can't. He suggested Brayden for ds!!

It sounds really nice. But she will likely have to contend with it being mis-spelt or mispronounced all her life. So, nince name, but maybe not 'practical'.

FriggFRIGG Sun 11-Nov-12 16:51:03

amary that's a luffley story....I like it more the more I say it...

It has Reasonable NN possibilitys too...

FriggFRIGG Sun 11-Nov-12 16:54:03

Yeah, she'd get used to it wink
DS is Arlo, and i utterly adore his name,so I'm okay with fairly odd names...

I just don't 100% trust DP (with names!) ,as I let him name our DD1 and I've never liked it sad

ShipwreckedAndComatose Sun 11-Nov-12 16:55:04

I knew a Phaedra (faydra)

I Think it's lovely!

Love arlo! But living in central Scotland would get lots of hmm looks if ds was arlo!

What about Ariadne? She was Phaedra sister <wiki knowledge>

FriggFRIGG Sun 11-Nov-12 16:57:41

Tbh I think the length of my names list would terrify even the most devoted name geek...I'm surprised DP managed to pick one at all...in fact he even chose a middle name!

FriggFRIGG Sun 11-Nov-12 16:58:29

Nah,i don't want the same initials.

Go on you know you want to post the entire list here! grin

FriggFRIGG Sun 11-Nov-12 16:58:46

Anyway,my list is long enough!!

Ok <scores all a names off list> dd1 initial?

FriggFRIGG Sun 11-Nov-12 17:00:09

Oh,go on then....promise not to laugh?

BOFingSanta Sun 11-Nov-12 17:00:14

Ariadne is gorgeous. Phaedra is ok, it could grow on me.

FriggFRIGG Sun 11-Nov-12 17:00:29

S

amarylisnightandday Sun 11-Nov-12 17:00:46

Yw! I knew instinctively how to spell Phaedra when I met her but I might have done a level class civ........geek!

Won't laugh at all. Considering ds share a name with a former prime minister, I'm in no place to judge!

FriggFRIGG Sun 11-Nov-12 17:06:38

I said it was a long list blush

FriggFRIGG Sun 11-Nov-12 17:08:29

<realises there are loads of same initial names in there >

<cares not>

Phacelia Sun 11-Nov-12 17:10:22

Love it, it's perfect.

Can I also suggest you add 'Phacelia' to your list? grin Not really a name but ever since I chose it here I keep thinking what a great girl's name it would make. (It's a really pretty purple flower beloved by bees. Don't be put off by the fact that it's other name is scorpion weed or that it's grown as green manure)

Phaedra is gorgeous. It was an album by Tangerine Dream in the 70s IIRC. (Hippy prog rock stuff - I loved them!) Ariadne & Artemis are my faves though.

How can you have Loki and Humphrey on the same list? shock It's like saying that your fave foods are spam sandwiches and beluga caviar. Which is fine, except you have to choose just one of them when it comes to names!

FriggFRIGG Sun 11-Nov-12 17:12:50

I have....er...eclectic taste...

FeckOffWithYourXmasBollocks Sun 11-Nov-12 17:14:01

Christ! That's a long in! I read Ezma as Eczema! confused
I can honestly say, with the exception of Nell and Nancy, I don't like any of them!

FriggFRIGG Sun 11-Nov-12 17:14:24

How is Ariadne pronounced?

FriggFRIGG Sun 11-Nov-12 17:15:35

Fair enough,
I loooove Nell and Nancy but I don't think DP will...

Ok just had a quick squizz!

Mara is my all time favourite girls name! Dh has vetoed it though sad Mara means ocean in Gaelic, but death in many other cultures. That's what put him off.

Like della, Luna, fern (also on my list), merryn (mirren is on my list), torrin is pretty, but I know a boy torrin.

Actually, are we looking for both boy and girl names?

Phacelia Sun 11-Nov-12 17:15:59

Ar-ee-ad-knee

Ah-ree-ad-nay

FriggFRIGG Sun 11-Nov-12 17:16:58

Also...just to clarrify,my list is a mixed list, boys and girls names all mixed up.

I did wonder about wilbur .......

FriggFRIGG Sun 11-Nov-12 17:18:02

Oooh

<adds Ariadne to list>

amarylisnightandday Sun 11-Nov-12 17:18:08

I like Luna it's gorgeous. Jago is a bit cliche now.

FriggFRIGG Sun 11-Nov-12 17:18:17

grin

amarylisnightandday Sun 11-Nov-12 17:18:37

Awwww Wilbur - Charlotte's Web!

picnicbasketcase Sun 11-Nov-12 17:18:53

Never heard Breac or Broc before. Interesting.

Yay <preens>

Pick Mara for me.

FairPhyllis Sun 11-Nov-12 17:25:26

Phaedra??? Holy crap no. The only association anyone will have will be the mythological one. (It's fee-dra btw)

I like Maud.

BonzoDooDah Sun 11-Nov-12 17:30:04

I know a Phaedra - lovely name! Difficult to pronounce if you've never seen it but hey - people get over it.

amarylisnightandday Sun 11-Nov-12 17:31:26

cheers with Pom Poms Phaedra!!!!!!

amarylisnightandday Sun 11-Nov-12 17:32:13

Anyways the janners down 'ere manage to pronounce Phaedra with no problems grin

Janners?

leelteloo Sun 11-Nov-12 17:36:18

I like Phaedra, my cousin is one. She is fed for short. What a list of names!!! Out of all of them Tabitha and Clara are my favs, they were top of my list but then he was a he. Good luck choosing.

LadyofWinterfell Sun 11-Nov-12 17:36:44

I know a Phaedra, nn Fay. Lovely woman, a bit hippyish! grin

<Wonders how many of these 'I know' s are the same woman>

Did you like bewitched leelteloo?? grin

amarylisnightandday Sun 11-Nov-12 17:55:07

Plymothians grin

My Phaedra is about 20 if that

leelteloo Sun 11-Nov-12 21:03:15

Loved bewitched, wrinkly nose emoticon

grin

Felicitywascold Sun 11-Nov-12 21:11:41

Do you read plays?

No. No. No. And no.

MoelFammau Sun 11-Nov-12 22:25:47

I know a lovely red-haired Phaedra in her late 30s. Great name.

BandersnatchCummerbund Sun 11-Nov-12 23:22:38

Dear God no. It's like calling your daughter Jocasta. There are an awful lot of Greek names that you should run screaming from. That is one of them!

FriggFRIGG Sun 11-Nov-12 23:47:19

But Cassandra is normal and fine? wink

BandersnatchCummerbund Sun 11-Nov-12 23:55:31

Oh, there's nothing wrong with Cassandra - nice enough. It's funny, though, they must all be terribly bland. I never met a Cassandra who had anything to say that seemed worth listening to, somehow.

wink

FriggFRIGG Mon 12-Nov-12 00:14:44

grin

Felicitywascold Mon 12-Nov-12 09:01:31

Difference with Cassandra is that it has been more widely used in the time between the classics being written and today.

although I still wouldn't pick it

Lulabel27 Mon 12-Nov-12 09:05:01

Are you peaches geldof...?!

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-2231642/Peaches-Geldof-husband-Tom-Cohen-pregnant-second-child.html

WitchesTit Mon 12-Nov-12 09:09:07

WOW. Just, WOW!

It's amazing, I've loved it since I was about 13 and reading James Herbert novels at the back of the class. One particularly horrific one had a fascinatingly beautiful character called Phaedra. If I had the balls I would name my dd that.

And Phaedra Vita is just...double wow!

WitchesTit Mon 12-Nov-12 09:15:31

Phyllis makes me want to do a whispered "Sih" sound before saying it, like when you shout for someone called "Mark" and you silently say "Skid" before you holler..........is that just me?

RubberNeckNibbler Mon 12-Nov-12 09:36:45

As we obviously have the same taste in boys names wink I'll offer you my last list:

Keir
Gregory
Oshian
Ethan
Oren
Garth (actually DPs offering)
Cyrus (got slated on MN for that one)
Tyrone (and that)

Girls were:
Genevieve
Jenna
Marianne
Leona
Annis (old form of Agnes)
Seren/Serena
Morgan
Tyrion

Ooh I like annis! Putting that on my list!

How do you say Tyrion?

RubberNeckNibbler Mon 12-Nov-12 09:47:26

It's Welsh and goes something like tee-ree -on

FriggFRIGG Mon 12-Nov-12 10:03:57

Err...no....I'm not peaches geldof...how very dare she!

witches your comment has made my DP very,um,pleased with himself hmm

grin

MotherfuckingMorrisMan Mon 12-Nov-12 10:14:54

It is pronounced Fee-dra not fay-dra. And Ariadne is ar-ee-ad-nee not nay at the end.

Phaedra is a really beautiful name on its own but the mythology and play behind it - it is a very sad tale. I personally love and adore the name Oenone and would love to use it for a child, but again the story behind it is so unfortunate really.

You have some really lovely names on that list. Your list did make me laugh - it reminds me of my longlist when I was pregnant and obsessed with names, poor d wasn't named for days. grin

FriggFRIGG Mon 12-Nov-12 10:22:18

But isn't Greek mythology more about the meaning than the story?
And isn't the meaning more about letting go,love, and self control?

So many names have sad connotations...I think we are okay with it,really...

HyvaPaiva Mon 12-Nov-12 10:22:41

Peaches Geldof is pregnant with a baby boy who she has named Phaedra.

FriggFRIGG Mon 12-Nov-12 10:26:50

Eh?
But...but...but...she cant!

FriggFRIGG Mon 12-Nov-12 10:31:21

It's a girls name...surely?

Alisvolatpropiis Mon 12-Nov-12 10:31:48

I rather like it! I don't like Ariadne...it reminds me of spiders. Is there a children's book with a spider called Ariadne? Or am I just odd?

Phaedra is the name Kate Moss sings on Some Velvet Morning with Primal Scream <Kate Moss fan girl>. (Think it's a cover of a Nancy Sinatra song).

FriggFRIGG Mon 12-Nov-12 10:33:32

Yeah it's one of DP's favorite songs (the nancy Sinatra one)
That's why he's so taken with it,I reckon.

MotherfuckingMorrisMan Mon 12-Nov-12 10:36:14

I think it's Anansi the spider. There was also a character in greek mythology called Arachne (I don't know what she did, something to do with weaving iirc, anyway that's where the name for spiders comes from).

I do see what you mean about Greek myths. And people have been calling babies Mary for years despite it meaning bitter.

Snowflakepie Mon 12-Nov-12 10:51:01

The meaning or story wouldn't worry me if I loved the name, however Peaches Geldof is a very very bad connection. It is definitely a girls name! But then, she is quite z list so many people might not even know or care... At least if someone asked you could say she was a female character in a Greek myth, showing you are educated and Geldof is a wally. Will your LO arrive before hers? She's only about 16 weeks I think!

squoosh Mon 12-Nov-12 10:51:17

Phaedra is absolutely gorgeous. And low on the frill factor which is always a good thing.

FriggFRIGG Mon 12-Nov-12 11:09:59

No.
I'm not even pregnant yet

<weeps dramatically>

Stupid,stupid geldof kid.
I hope she changes her mind and everyone forgets...

squoosh Mon 12-Nov-12 11:13:17

Wait, Peaches Geldof is naming her son Phaedra????

picnicbasketcase Mon 12-Nov-12 11:15:44

Astala also sounds like a girl's name. Guess she's going for a theme.

FriggFRIGG Mon 12-Nov-12 11:30:06

Someone should tell her it's a girls name.
<plots>

VolumeOfACone Mon 12-Nov-12 11:30:16

I like the Nancy Sinatra and Lee Hazlewood album a lot. So I thought of the song straight away.
It isn't a name I'd choose though.

VolumeOfACone Mon 12-Nov-12 11:40:43

FriggFRIGG Mon 12-Nov-12 16:56:50

I really need to organise my list into boy and girl names...

BonzoDooDah Tue 13-Nov-12 20:01:35

I think you need to get pregnant first ;)

Rhubarbgarden Tue 13-Nov-12 20:13:32

Oh please PLEASE use Io. I love it. I've loved it for years. It just earned me a 'you're insane' look from dh when I suggested it though. As did Anemone, which I really really wanted when I was pregnant. Any good to you?

You have a lot of my favourite names on there actually. Dd is an Audrey.

Can I also suggest Ingrid, Edgar and Clover?

FriggFRIGG Tue 13-Nov-12 20:31:50

Ooooh I like Ingrid and edgar!
And I do love Io...do you think Arlo and Io might be a bit much though...

FriggFRIGG Tue 13-Nov-12 20:34:34

Audrey is beautiful, I'd love to meet a little Audrey!

AreYouAbleMabel Tue 13-Nov-12 20:57:42

Isn't Phaedra what Peaches Geldof is going to call her next son? I could be wrong though, can you believe she is preggers again!

FriggFRIGG Tue 13-Nov-12 21:11:00

Yes,we've been through this already... ^ up there ^

And it's a boy confused

Brugmansia Wed 14-Nov-12 07:19:26

Just seen this thread now. One if the names we're thinking of is on your long list smile but it's one of the boys names.

seatbelt Sat 17-Nov-12 10:25:25

My daughter (8 months) is Phaedra and is named after the Lee Hazlewood song. I picked that name for a baby girl if I ever had one when I was about 20. Her middle names are Nova Romana. I'm also a massive Primal Scream fan so Phaedra was a perfect choice when they covered Some Velvet Morning.
I can't believe Peaches Geldof is calling a boy Phaedra. It's so obviously a girl's name, both in the song she claims to like and in Greek mythology. Oh well, good luck to her. I just hope I don't get asked if Phaedra is a boy's name from now on.
People I meet all seem to like the name and a lot of people are familiar with it so we haven't run into any problems.

Funnylittleturkishdelight Sat 17-Nov-12 10:34:07

hmmmm the Greek tragedy element wouldn't appeal.
