Geargrinder Sat 10-Nov-12 16:01:45

Just as the title says. What do you think of Lois and Lana as siblings? TIA.

FrillyMilly Sat 10-Nov-12 16:02:26

Lois lane

BoundandRebound Sat 10-Nov-12 16:03:30

Somebody likes superman

MaryAstor Sat 10-Nov-12 16:04:04

I dislike the matchy-matchiness of it.

The alliteration I am not keen on, but the double-whammy of the names being the same length too tips the combination into the categories of 'per rabbit names'.

Sorry. Both names are fine individually.

TheseGoToEleven Sat 10-Nov-12 16:04:31

Superman

noblegiraffe Sat 10-Nov-12 16:04:37

Superman and Smallville.

Dillydollydaydream Sat 10-Nov-12 16:04:49

I wouldn't use lana after reading another thread.

pixiestix Sat 10-Nov-12 16:05:25

Lois Lane

lljkk Sat 10-Nov-12 16:06:04

Fine, I wouldn't care.

picturesinthefirelight Sat 10-Nov-12 16:07:16

Superman is my first thought.

elfycat Sat 10-Nov-12 16:07:23

Two of Superman's female friends....
Lois Lane
Lana Lang

sausagesandwich34 Sat 10-Nov-12 16:07:44

I don't like it when siblings share a first initial

makes it very confusing when they start getting post!

I know a lois and Lara

fluffygal Sat 10-Nov-12 16:18:30

My Dd is Lana and my dog is Lois- is that ok? The dog was named before we got her iffy our defence, no superman fans here!

dilly is that because of what it spells backwards? My DD walks around saying her name backwards and has no idea what it means! grin

MrsWolowitz Sat 10-Nov-12 16:19:22

Smallville.

Narked Sat 10-Nov-12 16:20:41

Naff

Superman. Now going to read thread.

SandStorm Sat 10-Nov-12 16:21:13

I would think you were a big fan of Smallville.

Dillydollydaydream Sat 10-Nov-12 16:23:03

fluffy yes!! I hadn't even noticed that til I read it on another thread.

They do look like Lois Lane together, a bit samey.

Geargrinder Sat 10-Nov-12 16:28:19

Too late on the Lana front, dilly, she's very much is existence and tearing up my livingroom as I type. Not fans of Superman/Smallville at all, just polling to see who makes the connection. DH bothered by it more than me, but Lois is the only name we both love for DD2 - and we have argued over discussed loads.

DilysPrice Sat 10-Nov-12 16:29:15

Superman

cheesesarnie Sat 10-Nov-12 16:30:13

love them.

Pochemuchka Sat 10-Nov-12 16:30:15

Superman?

Superman fan parents

Superman grin

fluffygal Sat 10-Nov-12 16:32:52

The way I see it, they are not paired for life so it doesn't really matter. If you like the name, go for it. Not everyone will get the superman connection.

SilveryMoon Sat 10-Nov-12 16:32:55

I really like the name Lois. It was on the short list for if ds1 was a girl. I wouldn't use it with Lana though, just because of the superman thing.

zxcv123 Sat 10-Nov-12 16:33:53

The only thing I'd think is that the parents obviously liked 4 letter names beginning with L.

HokeyCokeyPigInAPokey Sat 10-Nov-12 16:34:57

Makes me think of a couple of country and western singers, not sure why.

I love Lois though.

Geargrinder Sat 10-Nov-12 16:35:01

I like you fluffy grin

Superman. With feeling sorry for Lana!

Geargrinder Sat 10-Nov-12 16:39:47

Feeling sorry for Lana? Sorry, confused, it's me who's confused now.

mathanxiety Sat 10-Nov-12 16:41:24

Don't do it. Apart from the Superman thing, Lois is quite a Sunday School ish name with a little edge to it whereas Lana is more Hollywood so imo they are names with different feels to them.

I know sisters names Elizabeth and Taylor.

VinoEsmeralda Sat 10-Nov-12 16:42:31

Lois lane

Also as they both start with 'l' people will mix, confuse the names IMO

cheesesarnie Sat 10-Nov-12 17:40:36

ignore everyone. i love them so do it grin

Geranium3 Sat 10-Nov-12 17:40:59

sorry don't like either of them and sound common and naff together and too americany!

TheDoctrineOfSnatch Sat 10-Nov-12 17:41:15

Too similar.

stargirl1701 Sat 10-Nov-12 17:41:29

Superman.

OwedToAutumn Sat 10-Nov-12 17:45:32

I always wanted to call my DD Pheobe, was worried people would associate it with Friends. But now, no one would think of that, and I gave wasted my chances to use my favourite name. sad

So, I say go for it!

RaspberrySchnapps Sat 10-Nov-12 17:46:47

superman. now going to read other replies.

Cahoots Sat 10-Nov-12 17:47:59

Just a little naff for being a bit samey but nice names and unusual.

Ephiny Sat 10-Nov-12 17:49:10

Superman/Lois Lane. Sorry.

Also I think Lana is a nice name, but not keen on Lois personally, it's a bit old-fashioned and frumpy. You might want to give them different initials as well.

DinosaursOnASpaceship Sat 10-Nov-12 17:49:57

Superman

BOFisAlwaysUltra Sat 10-Nov-12 17:52:36

Reminds me of my dogs Pepper and Pickle. You'll forever be mixing them up. Both names nice though.

Geargrinder Sat 10-Nov-12 17:56:13

cheesesarnie do I know you? smile

I got over the same initial thing a loooong time ago in this battle. For same-ish you want my husband's latest suggestion: layla and Lana. hmm

I'm surprised about Lois being seen as boring/Sunday school-ish, it's not at all what it conjures up in my mind.

Have tried hunting old Hollywood to get something else to go with Lana, but nothing else we agree on. Thanks for the replies.

PurplyWurply Sat 10-Nov-12 17:57:32

Lois Lane of course!

VivaLeBeaver Sat 10-Nov-12 17:58:16

Superman

cheesesarnie Sat 10-Nov-12 17:58:16

umm don't think so but i love those two names grin. i know a louis but not a lana so it's unlikely that we know each other!

Geargrinder Sat 10-Nov-12 17:58:28

Thanks Bof. I already mix up the dogs' and child's names on a regular basis and they're all very different. I'll speak to whichever will respond. blush

Welovecouscous Sat 10-Nov-12 17:59:39

No - sounds like 80s tv series set in us. Yes to Lois with another name. No to lana.

Geargrinder Sat 10-Nov-12 18:00:25

cheese I thought you might be someone I'd talked to about this away from here backing me up. Good to know there is impartial support for our likely choice! grin

Vix07 Sat 10-Nov-12 18:00:55

Lana? Inspired by the Immaculate Conception thread? grin

TimrousBeastie Sat 10-Nov-12 18:01:56

That someone is a fan of supermansmile

cheesesarnie Sat 10-Nov-12 18:02:09

grin no just a crazed mner.

Roseformeplease Sat 10-Nov-12 18:02:52

Try to avoid the same first initial - it means the post will get mixed up. Also, superman and Lana Turner. Too matching for me. Would choose Lara, rather than Lana (sounds less harsh). Don't really like Lois, either.

BOFisAlwaysUltra Sat 10-Nov-12 18:02:58

Is this to name two girls/twins then, or just your final two favourites? Of the two, I love Lana. But Lois is nice too.

Sunnywithachanceofshowers Sat 10-Nov-12 18:03:41

I immediately thought of Superman.

kaumana Sat 10-Nov-12 18:04:39

Superman

Geargrinder Sat 10-Nov-12 18:06:31

BOF Lana is my existing DD. second on the way. (yeses course, now that Lana has been slagged off I'm wishing I'd invited people to read the thread first! wink But wanted to see how many people made the Lois Lane and Lana Lang link unprompted)

Geargrinder Sat 10-Nov-12 18:06:55

Thanks for loving Lana smile

BOFisAlwaysUltra Sat 10-Nov-12 18:08:03

Oh yeah, just re-read the title, sorry. Yes, I like them, but I just think you'll drive yourself mad calling the wrong name. They'll both end up as LanaLoisYouKnowWhoIMean.

Geargrinder Sat 10-Nov-12 18:09:29

I'd do that even if I named them A and B grin

bryonywhisker Sat 10-Nov-12 18:10:28

I thought of Lana Turner and Lois Lane. Had no idea that there was a Lana in Superman
Like them both and as a pair.

I think they are both lovely names, especially Lois. Not sure if i'd have them as sibling names though.

TidyDancer Sat 10-Nov-12 18:12:54

My first thought was that they were the Playboy twins, but I don't think that's right....

I wouldn't use both names for siblings, although they are both actually very beautiful names.

ArthurandGeorge Sat 10-Nov-12 18:13:12

Too matchy

LadyGuilty Sat 10-Nov-12 18:15:08

Lana is too weak compared to ballsy Lois

motherinferior Sat 10-Nov-12 18:16:20

I would think their parents ODd on superhero comics as kids.

crazynanna Sat 10-Nov-12 18:21:05

Do you know, I have a Lois, and in 14 years of having a Lois, not one person has ever mentioned the Superman connection <true>

But....she does always get called Louise.

fluffygal Sat 10-Nov-12 18:25:00

grin well OP we do have similar taste in names! I also had a dilemma with my 2nd DD's name as we really liked a name that is a bit similar to Lana (doesn't begin with L or have 4 letters but still similar). I ummed and aahed over it, it didn't bother DH at all and we went with it anyway. 2 years later I don't regret it. I also liked a name of a BIg brother contestant and didn't go with it for that reason but no one would make that connection now!

fluffygal Sat 10-Nov-12 18:26:39

Ah when my dog Lois was in a dog contest they called her out as Louie! Dumb judges!

Frikadellen Sat 10-Nov-12 18:27:42

I think oh nice names

Geargrinder Sat 10-Nov-12 18:28:59

Loving the last two posts. My way of thinking is that the names existed before they were given to the characters, so we shouldn't let it affect our decision. fluffy we considered Clara but I thought that was more same-ish to Lana than Lois. Glad you stuck with your choice.

crazy that is a very cool fact indeed.

fluffygal Sat 10-Nov-12 18:29:32

OP Lana is a great name (biased here!), I don't know about you but I always get compliments on her name. But Not everyone is going to like the same names, if we all did it would be boring.

Yika Sat 10-Nov-12 18:31:56

Both absolutely lovely names, and a lovely combination. Slightly retro feel without getting into granny chic.

Geargrinder Sat 10-Nov-12 18:32:25

Exactly!

Old older gentleman stopped my husband recently to ask where we got the name Lana from. He was a huge fan of Lana Turner and thought we were too young to have chosen "such a beautiful classic" grin

BOFisAlwaysUltra Sat 10-Nov-12 18:36:47

It is beautiful. And I do like Lois too- it actually makes me think more of Malcolm In The Middle's kick-ass mother than Lois Lane. And God knows, that woman is a role model for the modern day grin

Yika Sat 10-Nov-12 18:37:15

I didn't even think of superman! Lois makes me think of a Lois I knew at school, and Lana makes me think of Lana Turner. Just lovely. Great names.

Alisvolatpropiis Sat 10-Nov-12 18:39:48

Sounds like you watched the young superman tv programme,Smallville?

Lois Lane and Lana Lang.

Fine names on their own,but not together.

VolumeOfACone Sat 10-Nov-12 18:40:06

Superman.

confuugled Sat 10-Nov-12 18:50:41

Superman/smallville too.

But I'd also worry caused by the confusion of having 2 Miss L Littlegeargrinders for incoming post, doctor's appointments etc. Much easier to have everyone in the family with a different initial!

mummybare Sat 10-Nov-12 18:55:49

Both nice names and no probs with them together. I'd get them mixed up, but that's just because I'm crap with names.

comixminx Sat 10-Nov-12 19:08:32

Also Superman. Mind you in the comics they were all LL's so you could also have Lucy (Lois Lane's sister), Lori (Lemaris, a mermaid that Superman fancied), Luna (Lumai I think: a girl from the future that he also fancied). And then of course there's the guys: Lex (Luthor) in particular. So you could have a nice long run of L names if you wanted! grin

I reckon that as your oldest is Lana, you would probably call them/introduce them as Lana and Lois, which doesn't give the connection as easily. And I think they are both nice names (although once had a friend called Lana who was quickly nicknamed by my dad as Lana the Banana, but I think thats more down to my dad than the name)

mathanxiety Sat 10-Nov-12 19:34:10

Lana and Katharine (Hepburn) -- classic and strong girls' names
Lana and Ingrid (Bergman) -- nice Northern European feel to this combo
Lana and Audrey (Hepburn) -- again, classic and strong names together
Lana and Vivienne (Leigh, though she spelled it Vivien) -- classic names again
Lana and Greta (Garbo) -- again, nice N European feel and both classic diminutives
Lana and Olivia (de Havilland) -- lovely, classic names
Lana and Rosalind (Russell)
Lana and Elizabeth (Taylor)
Lana and Sophia (Loren)
Lana and Rita (Heyworth) -- very Hollywood feel to this pairing imo

lovethesun1 Sat 10-Nov-12 19:34:44

Lois Lane! Do quite like Lana tho.

Puppypanic Sat 10-Nov-12 19:36:08

Mork and Mindy

MikeOxard Sat 10-Nov-12 19:39:04

Thet are nice names, lovely for sisters imo.

JollyGolightly Sat 10-Nov-12 19:41:27

Anagrams of soil and anal.

BOFisAlwaysUltra Sat 10-Nov-12 19:42:23

Well that's ruined them hmm

JollyGolightly Sat 10-Nov-12 19:43:50

Oh bugger have now read some of the thread. Sorry to give offence. FWIW I like Lana but DH vetoed it for the anagram reason.

autumnfrost Sat 10-Nov-12 19:44:12

cats

EugenesAxe Sat 10-Nov-12 19:44:22

A bit modern; fad-like. The alliteration also makes the names a bit Tweedledum and dee-esque.

If I met two children called Lois and Lana though, it wouldn't evoke much of a response. I think if you really like the names there's no major reason to not use them.

SecretNutellaFix Sat 10-Nov-12 19:47:33

Smallville/ superman

JudeFawley Sat 10-Nov-12 19:47:43

Alliteration is v naff.

diffo Sat 10-Nov-12 19:51:45

First Thought: Ok for twins

LizieBennet Sat 10-Nov-12 19:52:03

Superman!

Very pretty and go well together.

coldcupoftea Sat 10-Nov-12 20:10:18

I would think cool and quirky!

I wouldn't make the superman connection with Lana at all, and I think as the name Lois is getting more popular now (though still uncommon) I wouldn't immediately assume the parents were superman fans either.

Go for it! Far better than all the twee old lady names around at the moment grin

exoticfruits Sat 10-Nov-12 20:19:01

I just though that the post will be difficult when older-they won't know who it is for.

mirpuppet Sat 10-Nov-12 20:25:04

Lana got a bum deal -- Lois is much better.

charlottery Sun 11-Nov-12 20:55:06

I didn't think of superman, I like them

HappyHippyChick Sun 11-Nov-12 21:02:45

Superman.

GW297 Sun 11-Nov-12 21:23:13

Too similar and also identifying post issue!

LittleBairn Sun 11-Nov-12 21:54:37

I love Lois, Doloris is top of my list but DH is set against it. sad

Mollydoggerson Sun 11-Nov-12 21:58:48

Lana Anal

ImScaredShitless Sun 11-Nov-12 21:59:17

I did not make the connection. I my initial thoughts were that while they are not names I would choose personally, they seem like lovely names.

VBisme Sun 11-Nov-12 21:59:45

Superman

RillaBlythe Sun 11-Nov-12 21:59:48

Haven't read thread. I thought of Superman.

Superman.

timothyclaypole Sun 11-Nov-12 22:02:48

Superman, sorry!

FunnysInLaJardin Sun 11-Nov-12 22:04:23

quite nice

bitsofmeworkjustfine Sun 11-Nov-12 22:05:58

I thought twins, then i read the thread and didnt make the connection with superman.

but even if they were twins, they would be two seperate people, with seperate lives,.....

VBisme Sun 11-Nov-12 22:06:44

Lana and Vivienne (suggested upthread) is lovely.

Trills Sun 11-Nov-12 22:07:30

Kittykatmacbill Sun 11-Nov-12 22:21:09

Cheap on name tags but irrating for post.

And superman...

Pair of 50s American film stars. Rather cool and a bit glamorous.

Welovecouscous Mon 12-Nov-12 11:41:14

Welovecouscous Mon 12-Nov-12 11:41:30

Smallville

Welovecouscous Mon 12-Nov-12 18:23:16

See fluffy - it goes together naturally smile

dementedma Mon 12-Nov-12 19:35:51

Sounds OK to me

lois lane and lana lang was my first thought. But i don't think it's a huge deal.

ErikNorseman Tue 13-Nov-12 21:31:24

Smallville
And I don't even know how I have that connection because I never watch it

Popumpkin Tue 13-Nov-12 22:35:58

Too singy-songy and showing a lack of imagination.

FergusSingsTheBlues Tue 13-Nov-12 22:41:29

1970s suburban LA. cheerleader names. Quite like them. Would only work with blonde hair IMO. I have major synaesthesia though, so what would I know!

tittytittyhanghang Tue 13-Nov-12 22:48:14

supermans girlfriends, but it wouldn't put me off choosing it as names if i liked each of them individually!

invicta Tue 13-Nov-12 22:53:10

My first thought - sounds like a US drama show such as Will and Grace, Fraser or Everyone Loves Raymond.

This was quickly followed by pet names, cartoon characters (eg. Charlie and Lola), and finally, good names for twins.

curlypoo Tue 13-Nov-12 22:53:28

no just no

CharlotteWasBoth Wed 14-Nov-12 00:25:41

Too many Ls. And Lana means woolly!

(I did as I was told; apols if this has been said before.)

Welovecouscous Wed 14-Nov-12 00:31:09

Poor op!

I am never doing a thread about sibling names when I have dc 2

Chunkamatic Wed 14-Nov-12 00:31:38

Lois is a favourite name f mine, but the two together does make me think of Lois lane, I think you need to rethink Lana if this is a problem for you.

Beanbagz Wed 14-Nov-12 00:31:40

I like both names. I'm just not sure that i would give siblings names with the same first initial.

Chunkamatic Wed 14-Nov-12 00:34:18

Ah just read you already have a Lana (I too did as was told!) so then I would be Lana and Lois, so much less of an obvious issue!

They won't thank you for it when they open each other's mail. As instructed, I haven't read the thread but I'd imagine loads of people have pointed this out.

izzyishavingababyAGAIN Wed 14-Nov-12 00:53:30

Superman.

spaghettina Wed 14-Nov-12 11:32:37

Vintage sounding, quite cool

QueenofNightmares Wed 14-Nov-12 11:44:30

Smallville grin Lois Lane and Lana Lang.

Geargrinder Wed 14-Nov-12 11:47:43

grin welovecouscous , it's ok, I've been here long enough to know what to expect. DH and I just wanted to see how many people actually knew of Lois Lana and Lana Lang (we knew people would connect Lois with Superman anyway). DH has read all replies and not been put off. I think enough people don't know/care and the posts saying vintage, Hollywood, cool etc are in line with my own thoughts. I honestly don't give a toss about the mail thing. It's such a minor issue. Anyway, thanks for all the feedback. I'll be sure to tell my DD1 she got a bum deal. wink. Lois is on the list, with one other name, for a decision when DD2 is born.

Cahoots Thu 15-Nov-12 15:52:41

The mail thing isn't an issue if the have different middle initials. It is a pain if the initials are identical. I had the same as my brother and we ended up opening each others post, and that is when he was a Mister ans I was a Miss.

Smallville

delilah88 Thu 15-Nov-12 16:07:04

Lois is good, ditch Lana and find something less matchy

Geargrinder Thu 15-Nov-12 16:09:45

Lana (aged 2) now free to a good home grin

we would definitely have different middle initials cahoots.

orangepudding Thu 15-Nov-12 16:17:57

Both together are too much of a mouth full. Also men ruined the name Lana for e!

orangepudding Thu 15-Nov-12 16:19:03

Meant to say mumsnet ruined the name Lana for me!

Greensleeves Thu 15-Nov-12 16:22:21

superman and smallville

haven't read any other replies

Startail Thu 15-Nov-12 16:24:34

No, too matchy.
I know a lovely Louis, but Lana is a bit chavy and made up. Together its too much.

just about ok if Lana is a nn for Alana (Sp)or something non alliterative.

Geargrinder Thu 15-Nov-12 18:03:05

Glad my DD has now been labelled a chav. hmm Actually, Lana is quite an old name in a few cultures. Not made up at all. <blows childish raspberry>

... <considers hiding own thread before pregnancy hormones swing mood in opposite direction>

Welovecouscous Thu 15-Nov-12 18:27:59

Don't worry - my DS's name is considered meh on here. Surely chav better than meh? smile

Geargrinder Thu 15-Nov-12 18:32:16

grin

fluffygal Thu 15-Nov-12 19:14:38

gear I know 3 Lana's (mine was the first) none are chavvy. Agree Lana is not made up - Lana Turner was a film star fgs!!!

Lol at ditching Lana- she's over the hill at 2 years old anyway, make room for new baby!

Star Did you mean to be so rude?

OwedToAutumn Thu 15-Nov-12 19:21:50

Geargrinder the mail issue won't mean anything to a 2yo and a newborn but it could be a major problem to two teenage girls who actually receive post.

Geargrinder Thu 15-Nov-12 19:41:26

owed I know enough families in that position to believe, IMO, that it's not a big deal. In my own family most of the men had the same first name for generations.

fluffy it would reduce my food bills... wink do you think there's an official facility for Lana disposals?

millymae Thu 15-Nov-12 19:49:00

I love Lois and love Lana and certainly wouldn't have a problem - the names go well together. My two girls have matchy names begining with the same initial and no-one has ever thought it odd. I think people are far more inclined to make negative comments when they can do it anonymously and in your shoes I wouldn't be put off by them or the superman connection. This certainly didn't register with me and I'd be prepared to put good money on the fact that I'm not alone. Neither would I let potential problems with post put me off. We gave our two middle names that began with different letters and we've not had any mix -ups yet. If you like Lois as much as I do go for it - it's lovely.

redpanda13 Thu 15-Nov-12 19:52:08

Superman fan

mumbaisapphire Thu 15-Nov-12 21:03:41

Nice names. Never heard of Lana Lang but obviously have heard of Lois lane but I don't think it's an issue. As for the mail thing don't be put off I really think that is over thinking things. Most mail these days comes in envelopes which identify the sender do you can easily make an educated guess as to who it's for. In the grand scheme of things how long are they going to be loving in the same house for and receiving mail. If you open something by mistake then just hand it over. It's really quite simple!

mumbaisapphire Thu 15-Nov-12 21:04:31

That should be 'living' in the same house!

Worley Thu 15-Nov-12 21:13:36

are you superman fans?

Worley Thu 15-Nov-12 21:15:39

well you did say first thoughts without reading thread..
I like Lana a lot smile

CoteDAzur Thu 15-Nov-12 21:16:19

Superman

kellyhowells82 Thu 22-Nov-12 13:24:51

superman!

Sqeeky Thu 22-Nov-12 17:22:41

Superhero characters.

Which is not necessarily a bad thing. It's certainly better than Twilight names.

PurpleGentian Thu 22-Nov-12 23:15:20

Superman!

Lois Lane apears in just about every Superman adaptation there is, and Lana Lang was all over Smallville.

freerangechickens Thu 22-Nov-12 23:21:54

Someone has a thing for Superman (I did skim the thread and see that I'm not the only one, but that was my thought before I clicked on it)
