That's it, really.

It's a 4 yo chocolate coloured labradoodle bitch. We dont like it's current name.

I want a two syllable name, that doesn't sound bizarre when being bellowed in the woods.

(Yes, I know it should be in The Doghouse, but I thought it would be fun to name dogs instead of babies for a change.)

HoneyDragon Wed 10-Oct-12 21:11:28

Stratters.

<I Will Not Rest Till There is a Dog called Statters>>

PickledFanjoCat Wed 10-Oct-12 21:12:31

I heard of a dog called Linda the other day.

Really made me smile!

BoysBoysBoysAndMe Wed 10-Oct-12 21:12:56

Buttons (as in chocolate)

OwedToAutumn Wed 10-Oct-12 21:16:03

Oooooh! I like Buttons! (Not sure about Stratters - seems a bit disrespectful.)

Keep 'em coming!

Honey or Dragon would be nice names grin

Pickles77 Wed 10-Oct-12 21:51:56

Hamish!

pegster Wed 10-Oct-12 21:53:36

There are many, many chocolate lab types called Coco. I have met one called Hershey which I thought was quite cute.
Currently I like granny-chic names for pets so I would go for Vera or Rita or Betty

BoysBoysBoysAndMe Wed 10-Oct-12 21:56:08

Truffle

YouMayLogOut Wed 10-Oct-12 21:56:52

Snowy wink

OwedToAutumn Wed 10-Oct-12 21:57:25

I like Hershey, but DH doesn't.

Luckily it's a bitch, or DH would plump for Keith, Trevor or Dave.

OwedToAutumn Wed 10-Oct-12 22:00:46

We have another pet called Truffle.

But Snowy! That would be quite fun, as we have a Westie, so Snowy would be delightfully bizarre.

PandaWatch Thu 11-Oct-12 17:11:16

What is the dog's current name? May be easier to use something relatively similar (although saying that our dog has about 8 nicknames that he responds to that don't sound anything like his name!)

MrsVamoOOOOOs Thu 11-Oct-12 17:12:38

Sherry
Brandy

NervousAt20 Thu 11-Oct-12 17:14:42

If the dogs 4 you might really struggle to change her name now. Not sure about girl names but I LOVE the name Dave for a dog smile

OrangeFireandGoldashes Thu 11-Oct-12 19:33:06

If she recognises and answers to her name, it's a bit unfair to change it just because you don't like it. If you insist on changing it, at least make the new name something with the same vowel sounds and cadences as her existing name, so Lady could become Sadie or similar. Use the old name with the new name when calling her and gradually phase out the old name.

We took on a 10yo rescue dog and I wasn't particularly enamoured of his name, but two years on it's just "him" now and I forget how much I disliked it originally.

Ilovecake1 Thu 11-Oct-12 19:35:14

Galaxy?

birdofthenorth Thu 11-Oct-12 23:29:51

My dogs have just turned 5 and would be very confused to have their names changed. It took them long enough to learn them in the first place! You're getting an animal, not an accessory.

Agree if you must change it you should do so gradually, eg "Lexi Buttons!" for a few months before becoming just Buttons (were her original name Lexi).

Some less well-used chocolate themed ideas if you must:

Rolo
Smartie
Ripple
Thornton
Malteser
Chip

birdofthenorth Thu 11-Oct-12 23:31:37

Or Mocha

MrsJohnDeere Fri 12-Oct-12 06:45:40

Surely you can't change the name of a 4yo dog. Would be very confusing for the dog. Can you change it slightly so that it sounds almost the same when yelled across a field?

Very jealous of your labradoodle. My next dog will be one. I walk regularly with 4 of them and they're all adorable!

HarlettOScara Fri 12-Oct-12 07:05:44

Of course you can change its name. All those strays/dumped dogs that then up in rescue with no name seem to cope. And for some digs that may have been mistreated it is usually preferable to change their name as they may have negative associations with it.

Besides, my dogs (one of which is a rescue whose name we changed) answer to a whole host of nicknames.

It may be easier to pick something similar sounding but equally, you can just tag the new name onto the old one initially and gradually phase out using the old one.

DebK2012 Tue 16-Oct-12 18:12:11

Lola, Lexi, Beth, Mags

Leonas Fri 02-Nov-12 19:55:15

I love human names for pets but it maybe works better for males? I agree that Dave is an awesome dog name, although I also like Steve and Andy.
Maggie is good for a female I think too

SrirachaGhoul Fri 02-Nov-12 20:28:30

I think it's nice to give a rescue dog a new name; sort of represents a new start. It's just a word to them.

I like:

Peggy
Dolly
Martha
Maggie
Abbey
Meg
Lulu

Alisvolatpropiis Mon 05-Nov-12 21:45:20

Nymeria, Nym for short.

Alisvolatpropiis Mon 05-Nov-12 21:46:40

Wanted to call my jack russell puppy Nymeria but it didn't sit well on a puppy the size of a guinea pig.

SoYo Tue 06-Nov-12 20:18:49

We have a doodle called Betty and it really suits her! Can't imagine anything else now! Friends have choc labs called bisto (f) and oxo (m) which are great too! So many option......

blondefriend Fri 09-Nov-12 23:01:25

A dog name should be 2 syllables and preferably ending with an "ah" sound. Apparently it is better for training/recall. My last dog was called Amber and I renamed her from Lily (not that I didn't like the name it was just I thought new home, new name). Bella is good but quite common in the dog world.

MoelFammau Sat 10-Nov-12 00:26:10

Our dog was renamed aged... er... no idea really. Somewhere between 2-6, according to the vet. She was fine with it. Just grateful to have a home, food and no more men hitting her with sticks.

Her passport name was Mandy but I think it was 'M' day at the rescue home because our dog had no clue about Mandy.

I had a dog called Woody and my next I really want to be Biggles. There has to be a dog called Biggles somewhere.

Lionsntigersnbears Sat 10-Nov-12 09:34:27

what about Doodle?

Geargrinder Sat 10-Nov-12 18:03:12

I had a choc lab called Rolo. She was lovely.
