Should we change her name?

Hi I just wanted some advice/opinions really. Our daughter is 8 mths old and I don't like her first name- long story. She has been Christened. We have ben having a hard time recently for various reasons and I have admitted to dh that I dislike the name. Does anyone know if it's posible to change it- if it isn't I'll have to learn to live with it.

It's perfectly possible legally, I think you'd just have to do it by deed poll. Although I have read that once a baby is about 6mths they have already begun to identify with their name, so you may have left it a bit late, unless there's a nickname or diminutive that you use a lot that you could carry on with.

You have until a year to change the name without needing to use deed poll. Call the registry office now.

I think up to 12 months you can have an amendement made to the birth certificate (contact your registrar). After that it would have to be by deed poll. I like Erin though

Erin is a nice name.
Why don't you like it anymore? (if you don't mind me asking)

It wasn't the name I loved, more dh choice and I went with it at the time but I didn't know what it meant- I thought it meant peace, but it actually means Ireland.

FWIW I think it is a lovely name. I would have had it on our short list if it hadn't already been used by a family member. DH's family are Irish, but I had no idea about the meaning of the name and I wouldn't let that put you off.

I don't think you can have the birth certificate ammended as she has already been christened. You can change it by deed poll though if you are really unhappy about it. Alternatively, does she have a middle name you could use?

I think Erin is a lovely name

What would you change it to?

I love Erin too - but I suppose that's beside the point.

You don't have to answer this if you don't want to - but is the change to do with anger at your DH over something, or a rejection of the "Irish" bit?

If you can change it, do it - what does your DH say about it?

I like Erin too but that doesn't matter have you an idea what you want to call her?

You prob need to make a decision pretty quickly for the baby's sake and speak to your DH perhaps you could have Erin as a middle name if your DH has his heart set on it.

Does she have a middle name that you like so that you could just call her that?

I have seen this a few times.
How does it happen that a child ends up with a name the mother doesn´t like?

Thanks for all ur help and comments. Just wondering if anyone else has been in this situation. Looks like it's ok to change it as long as within the first year but not sure if morally it's ok.

Only you will know if it's 'morally' ok - how would you feel having done it? What reaction would your family have and would they support you, or might they continue to use Erin? It's not my favourite name, TBH, but I don't hate it. Can you find a name you like that sounds very like Erin (sorry, can't think of one! Ellie? Eve? Harriet? Elinor? god I'm crap at this) so the baby herself doesn't get confused?

My sympathies - this must be really tricky for you, but at least you're honest enough with yourself to admit it. I know one person who renamed her baby after the name had been registered, but that was only after about two weeks, I think.

i don't think morals come in to it do they?
it's a name, and if you really don't like it then change it

I sort of think it's nice that her dad's given his DD her name (but then I do like the name Erin).
Might you be likely to have any more children where you can then get your 1st choice?

Why would you choose a name and then change it?
