Hi
I posted a few wks ago about my friend who is preg with her first and she likes the name Mia, but couldnt decide whether Mia or Maya......
Anyway, she now likes Esme (said as Ezmee, if nobody knows, no offence if u do) I also love the name...would be an option if i have a DD (if she didnt choose of course)

Opinions please?

Mia or Esme?

Middle name Louise

Esme is my favourite. It's fine to pronounce it Es-mee if you're spelling it without the accent.

But Mia Louise is a bit too rhymey. I like Esme Louise better. And I really like the names.

'For Esme in Love and Squalor' Is your friend a big fan of JD Salinger?

Esme, pronounced Ezmee.

Mia is ... there's not enough of it...

I like Lois and Dulcie too. They sound like Esme's friends (in the nursing home, if not in the creche)

I really like Esme when pronounced the French way as if with an accent over the E, so Ez-may. Really dislike it when pronounced Ez-mee. Sorry - it just sounds so Anglicised and wrong, somehow. Not saying it is - just how it sounds to my ears.

So - my personal reference would be:

Esme (pronounced Ez-may)
Mia
Esme (pronounced Ez-mee)

I like Esme not keen on Mia as a name but lovely as a nickname for Amelia. Agree very over used at the moment!

Love Esme. Not as keen on Mia as I know a lot of them, but I have a Ruby, so what would I know about original names

Esmée = feminine name (like Renée)
Esme = male name

I also like it pronounced the French way, and dislike Es-mee and Es-may.

Ez-mee = cute
Ez- may = dismay

Has French origins but v.rarely used over there. Was popularised in Scotland. Where they pronounce is Ez-mee.

Oh never thought of it pronounced as Ez-may, though it does sound lovely. Just when it's written down, I would think most people say as they see.

Esmee with the little accent thing above the e (sorry don't know the name or how to get it on the screen) is nice but would people and also me still know how it's pronounced.... Is it still said as Esmee?

I've found about 98% of people automatically pronounce it es-mee for my dd. The 2% that don't get a big slap in the face from me. Hate, hate, hate es-may. Yuck.

Would you consider Louise as the first name?

Report
5DollarShake · 29/04/2010 13:55

It wouldn't occur to me to pronounce it Es-Mee - seeing as that I know it to be a French name. Doesn't matter if it was popularised in Timbuktu (anyway - it's been popularised in many places; not just Scotland) - seeing as that it's originally French, that's how I, personally, would pronounce it.

And if I saw the accent over it, then I'd be even more inclined to pronounce it correctly.

sparkleshine - how would you pronounce Renée? It's not 'rennie' like the indigestion tablets. It's Ren-ay, because of the accent. I think if you had the accent over Esmée, most people would pronounce it correctly accordingly.

I'd never even heard it could be Es-mee until I came on MN. I would go Es-may...

5DollarShake · 29/04/2010 14:56

I know it doesn't matter to you PuppyMonkey - sparkleshine was asking if people would know how to pronounce it, especially with the accents. I responded.

Agree - had never heard of the Es-mee pronunciation either, until coming on MN.
