Hi,
This is my first post and I'm hoping you can help me with choosing a name for DD3.

We really like the name Suriya but are wondering how it's going to be pronounced by someone who's never seen the name before. How would you pronounce it?

My name was always getting pronounced wrong as a child and I like to spare my daughter the same problems if possible!!!
Thanks,
Alyssa

Thanks for the quick response. You're right Marion - it's suh-ree-ya but I was obv right to be worried it would be pronounced sur-rye-ya

I'm wondering if we should spell it Sureeya??

My niece is called suriya (su-rye-a) and it's a beautiful name but I've never heard it pronounced suh-ree-a ! It's quite a common name in Portugal

I haven't seen the name before but I would have said suh-ree-ya.

afaik, it has several pronounciations anyway, depending on the cultural and linguistic background of the family - I know a Sur-eye-a, a Su-ree-a and a SOO-ria.

I know a Soraya pronounced Sor-EYE-a. Nice name.

I would pronounce it Sur-ee-ya.

But Suriya is a much nicer spelling than Sureeya, IMO.

I knew a Soraya who pronounced it Suh-RYE-ah.

I would pronounce Suriya 'Suh-REE-ah' I think the 'IY' spelling makes the REE sound the clear option.

Well, the only Suriya I know is a boy, so I would have presumed it was a boys name.

I'd pronounce it SUR-ee-yah - I know one, and she spells it Surya - would that spelling make it less likely for people to put a "rye" sound in the middle?

Thanks for your comments everyone. I think Suriya is the prettiest spelling (and the trad Indian one my Dcs are half-Indian).

We're going to go for Suriya May!
