please give opinions on these boys name!

Why is it so difficult to pick a boys name!

I can't go for anything too way out as this baby will be brought up in Glasgow as well as probably preferring make up to football, as will have 3 big sisters.

Therefore be gentle on my choice of names. Thanks.

Austin
James
Ben
John or Johny

Not sure if Austin is just a bit unique for us. Also reminds me of Austin Powers.

Austin - no sorry esp not in Glasgow
James - like it prob be shortened to Jim / Jimmy
Ben - like it but lots of them around
John or Johny - like John not Johnny

Archie - nice, 'cheeky chappie' name that unfortunately has become a little too popular. Definitely not to be Archibald on the birth certificate though!

Austin - I find it ugly and annoying

James - zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz...sorry, I fell asleep then. James is probably the dullest name in the world.

Ben - like it but agree v. popular. Have you thought about Benji instead?

John or Johny - A good solid name, far too popular a few decades ago but not so much now. Johnny might have condom connotations, and John is another name for the toilet. Don't know if this would put you off?

Archie - I know an archie but it is also a very popular dogs name so not keen

Austin - reminds me of an old car

James - DS would be very upset to hear his name is boring..bit biased on this one

Ben - another good dogs name, prefer Billy

John or Johny - quite like john/jonny

John and Johny seem to be the preferred choice. It is mine as well but what puts me off it is it is FIL's name. Which is fine, although he would not inspire me to call a child of mine after him.

I know my Dad will be all put out because he has always wanted a child named after him. His name is Hugh and although I would put it in the middle couldn't call a boy Hugh.

My ds2 is called Hugh! He is a big strapping lad and it was a last minute name when he was born as the name we had sort of chosen before just did not suit him at all.

We usually call him Shug or Shuggy which works well for his age(3.1yrs) and always get lots of positive comments on his name.

Out of your list I like Johnny.

I feel your pain, having a DS after 3DDs and don't live that far from Glasgow so know exactly what you are going through.

James, Ben and Johnny are nice but quite boring and safe.

Round here all the boys are Ryan, Callum, Connor, Aidan, Alex, Thomas, Joseph, Ben, Oliver, Jack, Logan, Finlay, Nathan, Liam etc

Definitely not Austin! Johny is my favourite from your list but you should name him Hugh after your dad - it's a great name, I'd definitely use it.

I am not really sure what the popular names in Glasgow are at the minute., so thanks for that sweetkitty. I am still in Merseyside.

I quite like Hugh now, I think old fashioned names are coming back into style. Like Jack was always an old mans name when I was young younger. Now it is so popular. Archie was always old fashioned as well.

The name Hugh has grown on me in last few years, sorry hope I don't offend anyone. It has always just been a long standing family sniggger. My Dad has always loved his name, going on at me and my two siblings about it and how it is such a great name for a boy. I honestly think he is on commission for ensuring the name continues for generations to come.

I think the more he has went on, the more we have dug our heels in and laughed about it. Also, DH has vetoed it out.

i do like Shuggy though, think it is quite cute. I will need to do some talking of DH round to it though.

It is now driving me nuts.

Archie - nice in some ways but, hard to say this without sounding rude, it sounds a bit pretentious. Sorry.

Not sure where Austin comes from. Dh said there is a rugby player whose first name is Austin. Not that I know anything about rugby.

antoinettechigur - never thought of Archie as pretentious. Just thought of is as an old fashioned scottish name. I could imagine a football commentator being called Archie.

My dd is named after two great-grandmothers. Personally I think that grandparents is a bit too close a relation to be named after. But I like John and Hugh best of your choices. What about Jonathon rather than John, so it's a bit less your FIL's name?

Archie pretentious. Still trying to get over that. Can't think of much pretentiousness in a good old fashioned Glasgow name!! I didn't realise it was becoming popular.

I love Euan but Dh doesn't.I wanted to call Dc3 Euan but she was a girl. My friend has a cat called Alfie (after the eastenders character). That has put me off Alfie.

I think calling a baby Hugh is putting me off the name. Though, 12 years ago I could never have imagined calling a baby Jack.

This boy naming mallarkey is getting to be too much for me.
