Something like Thomas?

JamAndPeanutButter · 11/03/2010 20:57

DS2 due soon and Thomas is the only name DH and I can sort of agree on (ie neither of us completely hates it). Its just it leaves us a bit ...underwhelmed.

Can anyone suggest something a bit more interesting (but not TOO 'interesting')?

Thomas is a little bit dull.

What about;

Sebastian
Dominic
Euan
Patrick
Louis
Alexander
Stefan
Tristan
Lucas

I like Patrick but DH doesn't and we had to discount Sebastian, Euan, Stefan and Louis because of people we know- Its so hard!!!

Someone suggested Monty which I think is really sweet but I'm scared he'll get the crap beaten out of him at school

I love Monty and suggested it DH but he reminded me that i have a thing about calling children "proper" names before they are shortened to nicknames. I don't think i could call a child Montgomery though.

Hmm, I like Alexander but I dont like Alex- which it will be inevitably shortened to... unless i chase after him saying 'actually it's Xander' for the rest of his life (which would make me The Worst Person In The World)

The more names I hear the more I like Thomas!!

What do we think of Tommy?

There are so many Thomas's that he may be always referred to as Thomas/Tom ...followed by your last name.

How about Nicholas (Nick?)

I once shared a house with a guy called Nick who was so annoying I cant hear the name without thinking of his infuriating rent-dodging face!

So many nice names are ruined by horrible people!

I like Thomas, it is my DHs name, I call him Tomtom, his parents call him Thomas and his mates call him Tom. I think that name and the names you like are very versatile and that is part of the appeal no?

I love Xander, and TBH, your DS's peers will shorten and amend whatever name you give.

My DS was almost Thomas too.

Thomas is very very popular - I must know at least a dozen at my DCs' primary school.

Other popular names (so presumably the same "flavour") are

Oliver
Max
James
Josh(ua)
Joseph
Matthew
Daniel
Sam
Ben
Edward
William

FWIW I know a couple of Montys and I think they are both OK wrt getting beaten up! One is very clever and very very funny tho so that may help

My ds is Thomas - & I will happily admit it's a bit on the dull side as a name choice... but ds has never had another Thomas in his class/nursery class/playgroup. He is Thom (ponce), Thomas-Bomas and Tom-Tom with his mates.

I personally don't like Tommy, but that's just me.

I think Alex is almost more 'now' - Thomas is at least utterly classic

How about Lawrence? Samuel?

I know an adorable Monty...

You're quite right thatsnotmymonkey

I'm probably just being indecisive. Put it down to being pregnant and woolly headed! If I was I having a girl I'd know straight away what to call her... Just thought seek some inspiration

Ok some slightly more "out there" names;

Lorcan- Laurie for short
Miles
Nathan- Nate for short
Theodore-Theo/Teddy for short

I like William, Thomas and Rafferty best.

I thought the same before naming my Thomas but he looked like one when he came out and I couldn't imagine in name that suits him better (and he's certainly not dull!)
Yes, it is popular, but timeless as well, and when you're an adult no one calls you "Thomas S" or whatever. You choose your own abbreviation or people will call you some other NN entirely.
It works whether you're a chippy, actor, bank manager or high court judge, and I want to keep all is options open!
(Sorry, realise this is a thread about alternatives but just wanted you to give your original choice a fair crack!)

I couldn't agree more. Tom is a classic for a reason and I would like to repeat myself and say it is not boring.

I really don't get this need to give your child a unique name - not when there are so many nice normal names about. Controversial I know but hey I like Tom!

We have a Thomas and I love the name. Everyone says how much he suits it. We've met 2 other Thomases, and we don't see either on a regular basis so it doesn't feel too popular.

spotofcheerfulness, cece- I'm with you. I think Thomas sounds like a kind, solid, but fun sort of chap! It just seemed a bit obvious and I didnt want to hear another name in a few years and think... aah! wish I'd heard that before!

TNMM- I like Miles, not sure about Rafferty though... We both like William but have already used it as DS1s middle name. DH name is Andrew so DS2 would be Thomas Andrew

Top of DH's list are Winston (after Churchill) and Nelson (after Mandela)

I think we'll stick with Thomas
