Regina - how do you pronounce it?

Ok, so is it Ruh-geena or Ruh-jyna?

Because I can't give my child a name that is a perfect rhyme for female genitalia.

In German (and I lots of 60+ year old Reginas), it is pronounced Re-geena, with a hard g.

What Sassy said.

Don't do it. My friend had enough problems being called Virginia so I pity any poor cunt saddled with Regina.

Oh fuck, really? Regina Vagina?

DH wishes to honour his dead grandfather, Reginald so is quite set on it.

T'would be middle name only...Maybe Vagina Regina would be ok as a middle name? What do you think?

A girl I went to school with was labelled vagina because of this name.

No, no, has to be Regina as it is in honour of dead grandad Reginald, you see. Though I agree that Elizabeth is a far far nicer name.

like vagina. there is NO WAY he can call his daughter regina vagina. nalda? which is fairly ugly but not named after a foof.

Report
AitchTwoOhOneOh · 09/03/2010 23:12

or regan? also ugly.

SusieCarmichael · 09/03/2010 23:16

no way! are you lot taking the piss? i've never heard of it being pronounced like virgina! to me its reg- eena

anyway.... if you call her regina it is pronounced how you like it pronounced, seriously never heard the other way before in my life i know 3 reginas

its like gina with a re in front!

Report
notanumber · 09/03/2010 23:16

Nalda also v ugly (possibly even more ugly than Regina in terms of sound)...

But even if not, is a no-go as it is Regina or nothing because of dead grandad Reginald.

C'mon, as a middle name? If the first name is v pretty and lovely?

Even if you insist on one pronunciation, it will be linked to vagina at some point in her life.

Sorry

Genalda? Maybe. Could then be shortened to Jenny

No amount of prettiness can make up for being named Vagina (essentially).

Report
Confuzled · 09/03/2010 23:22

What'w wrong with Gina? Still linked to Reginald, but less ugly/fanjo related.

Regina would be fine as a middle name but - even without the partial rhyme (I'm sure when they say Elizabeth Regina its Reg-eye-na) its a bit ponderous as a first name. Plus it might get abbreviated to Reggie which just isn't right for a girl.

Saddling a baby with that for the sake of a dead GP is a bit silly. If your DH really wants something derived from Reginald, take the middle - Gina is lovely.

Ok, so that's nine votes for "oh-dear-god -no-don't-fucking-call-her-Regina-EVER"...

And one (halfhearted) vote for "Regina-is-okay-as-a-middle-name-I-suppose-if-you-really-really-have-to".

Have to say that DH shouldn't be counting his chickens on the basis of this...

Totally agree with Susie Carmichael's post

It is usually Re-Gee-na like Regina Spektor - think most people would prn it this way and not to rhyme with vagina! Although after reading this thread maybe there really are more people who would say it that way

It's also in the film mean girls prn this way and not the vagina way!

Erm, maybe you could mix up the letters into something else

Reginald, erm...Ange, Angel

I agree with menomena, Re-geena, like Regina Spektor...

Here it is Re-gyna (as in the capital of Saskatchewan, Canada). I don't think it is appalling as a middle name - I've heard a few worse. Couldn't you suggest to dh that you wait until you have a boy? Assuming that the option of having more children one day is a possibility that is. It isn't actually the female form of Reginald in any case - they have completely different roots. Reginald doesn't appear to have any female forms at all.

I guess another option would be to use Reginald itself as the middle name - my mother has her father's name as her middle name, and with the trend to have surnames as middle names it might not stand out too much.

Regeena.

UK/US adaptations make it Re-gyne-a.

Either way it's fairly awful.
