Baby names

You'd think we'd have a girl's name at least...

Hi all,
We have two little boys and are due our third child in 5 weeks. We think this one is pink, although are preparing for either as we're not totally sure.
With both previous pregnancies, we had a generous short-list of girls' names (well, six or so...) and found boys' names most difficult to settle on. We still like the girls names we listed back then, but seem to have a doubt about each of them. Mind if I share a few thoughts and maybe somebody can come up with something new for us?

  • Our surname begins with 'E', so names like '-ie' endings which run into the 'E' aren't ideal.

  • We have L uke and J ack already, and would like a girl's name with more than one syllable, and a little lower on the top baby names list than our first two. It should be pretty, but quite a strong name too.

  • We like:

Anna
Beth
Darcy
Carrie
Katherine (DH likes more than me)
Jana
Sasha

but would love to come up with some more options. Middle name is likely to be Olive or Anna, but if we find the right first name which needs a different middle name, we will change.

(For boys, just in case, and just for the record, we're considering Henry/Harry, Felix, although have a niggle against each of these too )

Thanks in advance for help...

Anna I really love. Its on my list too. Simple, pretty & not TOO overused.
Beth has one syllable! You said you wanted more than 1?
Darcy I love.
Carrie, no, I don't like that much, reminds me of the Stephen King book/movie (bad association).
Katherine (DH likes more than me) it's a good, strong name. A classic. Personally I wouldn't choose it but it's a good name.
Jana, no, don't like it at all.
Sasha for a girl I don't much like. For a boy I love it (short for Alexander)

How about-
Corinne
Abigail
Alexandra
Naomi
Olivia
Rebecca

I met a Harriet today and thought what a lovely, underused name that it.

From your list I like Anna lots, then Carrie, then Beth, then Katharine. Not so keen on the others.

My favourite from your list is Anna.

I also like Beth, but preferably as a nn for Elizabeth.

Anna -- love
Beth -- only if short for Elizabeth, and prefer Eliza or Elsa as stand alone names
Darcy -- I don't like (can't get past the 'arse' sound in the middle)
Carrie -- like (but it ends in -ie?)
Katherine -- like, nice nn potential
Jana love, also love Milla would it be 'Yana' or 'Jana' (prefer Yana)
Sasha -- I think of this as a boy's name

Anna and Carrie from your list. If you want more than one syllable, then Beth could become Bethya, Bethan or Bethany.

I like Anna, Sasha (is it usually Sacha for a girl?), Carrie and Katherine from your list.

Our list 6 months ago was:
Rosa
Marianne (we used this)
Nancy

If it wasn't for family/close friends getting there first or partner vetoing I'd have added:
Lydia
Felicity
Seren/a
Elizabeth/Eliza
Nell

Oh, thanks so much for your replies.

Maria 2007, I agree that Anna is lovely. It's actually my middle name, also my fab Gran's middle name who just passed away aged 103, so plenty of good reasons to use it. And yes, our reservation about Beth is the one-syllable bit - with the boys' names it does sound like we're overdoing the simple names thing. Darcy is a really good name, it was no.1 the last two times if we'd had a girl, but now we're just thinking maybe we need something a bit more feminine. I liked your suggestions too - we have an Abigail and Olivia in the family both under 2 years, they obviously work with the surname!

Diddl, I really love Felix too, and if this one turns out to have little boy parts, I will be working hard on DH who isn't as keen as I am.

Hassled, Harriet is a nice name. DH loves Harry so must run Harriet by him, it might work. Anna is a good name, isn't it? I worry that it's maybe a bit plain sometimes, can't decide about this one.

Hulababy, Anna is probably top of the tentative list right now. Love Beth too, have an Elizabeth Granny on DH's side and it's a silly thing, but since we gave both our boys middle names from DH's side of the family, am reluctant to seem to call a third child a name from his family and leave my poor Mum and Dad out in the cold again.

Mathanxiety, our reservation about Carrie is is the 'ie' running into our surname. It's actually not too bad, but not totally crisp - otherwise this name would be higher up. Jana is lovely, and I wouldn't like the Yana spelling, so I guess the niggle is whether people could manage 'Jana'. Around here I was amazed to hear what the local accent could do to 'Luke', so anything is possible!

AllieW - we played around with Beth and Anna to try and find a slightly longer name, but didn't come up with anything that felt better than the simple names on their own.

Skegness, a funny thing comes to mind when I see Anna and Nancy in your reply. At the weekend my Dad was showing me some old census records of our family from 100 years ago. I had never known I had a great-grandaunt Anna on my Mum's side - this was because she was known as Nancy all her life

Thanks all, good reassurance and food for thought. Guess I will probably have plenty of time to think about it, but still get to EDD with nothing decided

What about Annabel if you want a longer name? You could shorten it to Anna.

What about Anja/Anya?? Quite similar to Anna but that bit different and not as popular!

Howabout Carrie as nn for Catherine or Caroline (okay, I was watching Four Weddings (again!) the other week and I think that Carrie is actually a nn in the film).

Anna also lovely. As is Harriet as suggested.
