Hello

We are expecting our baby boy to arrive any day now and are still undecided about names.

I would love to hear your opinions (good and bad) on the following:

Hector
Arlo
Nathaniel (nn Nate)
Aaron
Theo
Jasper
Lucas

Surname starts with B and is 2 syllables

Thanks!

Hector - Not keen, But it is different so could very well be 'cool' iygwim

Arlo - Love it, It's a very cool name.

Nathaniel (nn Nate) Not keen on Nathaniel but I do actually like the nn Nate.

Aaron - Love it, Thinking of this for if DC2 is a boy.

Theo - Really nice, Although I prefer Thor.

Jasper - Very nice, May add this to DC2's list.

Lucas - Nice, Was one of our choices for Ds1.

My favorites are Arlo, Jasper and Aaron.

Love, love, love Nathaniel, it is my all time favourite boys' name, plus it is not even in the top 100 so your little one is unlikely to be one of several in a class. Would be using it for this one if it's a boy, but DH has his heart set on Dylan, which I do really like, so we'll probably go with that.

Not really keen on any of the others, particularly Hector and Arlo, they seem a bit too 'cool', and may date.

Hector - very posh, so depends where you live...
Arlo - sorry, find it a bit pretentious
Nathaniel (nn Nate) - fab name
Aaron - lovely
Theo - fab
Jasper - could be cool but depends on personality....
Lucas - nice but very popular!

don't like Lucas and Jasper but like the others.
Knew someone called Hector who was Puerto Rican so nice spanishy name but some people might think of Hector's House - children's TV programme in the 70s ( he was a dog who lived with a frog and something else) but that would only be very old people like me

Arlo is nice, handsome and has character. Its unfamiliarity would put me off as I bet most people would mishear it and not know hat it was at first. At least it's distinctive.

Jasper I'm kind of neutral on, I don't dislike it but it's a tad "arty" for me.

Aaron is OK, nothing exciting but inoffensive enough. (Except that double "a" kind of bothers me... but maybe I'm being a tad neurotic!)

Can't stand Hector, probably my least favourite boys' name around at the moment. It makes me think of the verb "to hector" - a bullying, nagging person comes to mind. Also it has a very posh feel to it. I feel like every other boy featured in upmarket magazines is called Hector (you know, the little sons of semi-aristocratic interior designers being interviewed on their fabulous lifestyles). I imagine a Hector would go to a boarding school and be either the class bully, or the class geek. Or both - the "alpha" of the geek pack.

Nathaniel and Lucas both feel like very "wet" cottage-cheesey names to me. I prefer Nathan and Luke. Nathaniel's not so bad if you call him Nate, I suppose.

I feel similarly about Theo... the "th" sound makes it sound kind of 'wet'. It does nothing for me, and it also feels a bit incomplete, like it should be short for something.

Aaron

Sorry I don't know what that stray "Aaron" is doing at the end of my post! It looks like I'm signing off as "Aaron" (I'm not!).

Thanks everyone.

Have gone off Hector now but still liking the others.

Really like Lucas but fear it might become really popular.

This is so hard!

My favourite is Lucas and this is at the top of our shortlist for DS1 due in April.

However, I'm having second thoughts due to it's popularity and peoples opinions. See topic Has the name Lucas become too popular? DS1 due in April...'

We are having DS3 in April and we have Hector and Jasper on our shortlist. We already have a Theodore, nn Theo!

We can't have Arlo, because of Theo
Nathaniel - not keen
Aaron - too biblical for me
Lucas - I know about 10 of them so too popular for me.

Good luck - it's so hard deciding!
