None of which DH likes but since he has offered a grand total of zero useful suggestions so far...

I'm particularly interested to hear what you have to say about Gregory as have not found it mentioned here.

Thanks

I love the name Gregory, but DH vetoed and we ended up with an Edward!

Louis is best. Greg reminds me of the pie shop.

Gregory - I love this one. I think Gregory is less pompous than Barnaby but it's still lovely. I also think of gregarious! I also like Greg Rusedski and it is a confident happy name.

Louis - I love this one too. I think I prefer Leo though.

Arthur - Arthurian, Gregorian, you must add Dominic to your list! Must all your names have their own adjective!!? Only joking. Art is a nice nick name, but Arthur is a bit too self-consciously trendy for my tastes. It's not bad. It's just a bit 'of the moment'.

Edward, I really like this one. Classic but one of the better ones. I like Teddy too.

What do you think of Richie? Instead of Archie! has a bit of an Arthur vibe, but less 'now'.

I'd go for Gregory or Edward. Gregory because it's rarer.

ps just realised, Edward has it's own adjective too of course, Edwardian!!

Another vote for Gregory. I like Arthur as well, but I don't live in a trendy-naming-zone, so it doesn't have that vibe for me.

Please use Arthur. I really love it but will never be able to use it with DP's surname.

I like Gregory too.

Ooh yeah, Gregory, I like it, have that one, deffo.

I love Edward and like the nn Ned.
I also like the name Arthur.

itstwins · 13/01/2010 10:34

Definitely Louis. Beautiful name and is not try-hard trendy like Arthur (which I do like a lot but I agree with MaggieMna's comments). I really like Edward too although maybe a bit too regular?

Gregory is not bad but Gregs were always naughty boys when I was growing up and there is the bakers..

I don't like Gregory, or Greg, sorry.

Very happy to have Gregory confirmed as not an aberration of hormone addled mind. I hadn't thought of the quality sausage roll purveyor and have conveniently already forgotten the connection.

Diggory is gorgeous and I'm v keen on Cedric too although it's more controversial and perhaps a teeny bit effeminate but that's because i'm thinking of the marvellous Cedric in Love in a Cold Climate. Neither of these will ever be agreed to.

Edward/Teddy is a v strong contender but we have already unwittingly named 2 DSs after tank engines so perhaps we should try something different. Arthur is big favourite of mine but I'm worried from what you say about it being too trendy. Plus, my mother detests it which should be neither here nor there but now lurks in my head.

Louis may always have spelling/pronunciation problems?

Arthur is the best

I like all of your names. I think MaggieM's comments are spot on. The only thing I would add is that I think Edward may suddenly rise in popularity because of Twilight (I don't even watch it but I know there is a character called Edward in it).

Do you like Henry, Rufus, Wilfred, Everett, Benedict?

Problem is I like them all really. Maybe we'll just have them as shortlist and see what the child looks like at arrivals. Maybe DH will come up with something that trumps them all.

May add Rufus to that shortlist but it does remind me of ruffian. I know DH likes it though.

Of course it could be a girl but that's a whole other thread.

I have an Edward, nickname Ed, and it suits him so well.

I'm not so keen on Ned, Teddy etc as a nickname - bit too cutesy for me, but Ed is fab

Lovely list - am biased as Gregory is my lovely big bro, and Arthur my darling late dad... and therefore DS middle name.

Think Gregory is really underused... think Greg a lovely name for a little boy (and also a very accessible name for older boys/young men) and Gregory has real gravitas.

I like them all except Louis. We had Rufus on our shortlist but I backed out thinking it sounds a bit wet, ruffian toughens it up a bit though, it may go back on so thanks for that :0)

Gregory was on my short list I think it is lovely

Have you considered Edmund as an alternative to the very popular Edward (my brother is Edmund so am biased)

Don't like Louie for no really good reason just that I don't think it is a very strong name. (and I always think of Donald Ducks nephews, Huey, Louie and Dewey.)

Arthur is definitely growing in popularity I have known of a few recently. I am neither here nor there about it but do like the shortenings Art or Artie

I'd say the thomas the tank engine thing is a good reason to have an Edward - otherwise he'll just feel left out Plus I think Teddy or Eddie are really cute nicknames.

itstwins · 13/01/2010 14:10

I think Edward will soon be very popular due to Twilight. I think it will become as popular as William & James. Edward seems to be on everyone's list at the moment!
