Since i found out i'm having a girl the only name i really like is Ruby! I know its so v v popular but dont know what to do! others on list are:

Lola
Elizabeth
Lily
Summer
Laila

My surname is very unusual so unsure about Elizabeth as it doesnt quite go......... aaaaargh!

I don't know how popular Ruby is but i love it!

Lola always sounds a bit showgirl/prostitute to me, sorry

Lily is popular

Ruby was the second most common girls name last year, but I still like it a lot, it's lovely!

Also like Lily and Summer (bit ironic for a December baby though?!)

OP, I like all your names except Summer.

Like the idea of Ruby Elizabeth tbh!

My sons name was different at the time-now there are loads!

If you love it, use it!

I agree that Lola is a showgirl (polite way of putting it) name.

There are billions of Lilys around at the moment. It depends how much popularity of a name bothers you.

From your list, Elizabeth and Laila are my favourites.

Ruby is very popular at the moment but it's a nice name so why not if it's what you love?

Otherwise you could use Elizabeth for the first name and then call her Eliza, Lizzie or Beth or Bess?

Also I think Laura is much underused.

Ruby is lovely, don't know many round here.
Also like Lily and Elizabeth, but would steer clear of Summer for a Winter baby.

she is the only one i know

Diddl - yes song called Ruby - very sad song with a jaunty jingle. I sing it every time i hear the name Ruby.

Love the name but it is common (in that a lot of people are called it) and as my DS has the second most popular name in our county as registered during his birth (we knew no one with his name but whenever we go to the park there are at least 4!) i don't want to do the same for DD. Hence no Ruby, no Isabella, no Scarlett or Freya.

All beautiful names though.

Can't actually think of any name i do like though as the ones above are lovely but DH has vetoed them all.

Ruby is gorgeous. Even if it the most popular name in the county that means most girls (?90%) will have other names and if you have an unusual surname then it won't be an issue. We have a common surname and loved a popular name for DS, kept agonizing over it but in the end it just felt like the right name for us and we've never regretted using it. Friends who have common names told me that they were grateful to their parents that they'd been given a "normal" name that helped them fit in and that helped us decide!

Not so long ago, the only Ruby's were 90 year old great aunts. Funny how a name gains popularity and people start to find it beautiful. Do we like names because they're popular or do they become popular because we like them?
I thought dd's name was beautiful and unusual, still like it but now it's in the top 50. I swore i wouldn't but I got sucked into the zeitgeist just like everyone else.

It won't be popular for ever so I would go with Ruby if that is your favourite.

You could pick an "unpopular" name and find in 3 years time that everone is calling their baby that name.

Must depend where you live - I don't know/know of one single Ruby. If you love it, go for it. I have a name which was very popular 40 odd years ago and still is - it really doesn't matter

I loved Ruby then it became really popular so was in two minds, then an MNer pointed out she might get called Ruby Murray so I decided against.

I also like Rosaliebut then my mother today pointed out there is a slang phrase for tea or something that comes from Rosalie?

puffling - For me, the love of the name Ruby came from a BBC1 Series called "Cutting It" which started around 2000 I think. Sadly I'm not allowed to use the name Ruby because OH thinks it's an "old lady" name. Pah!
