It is short for Alexander.
Call the child Alexander and shorten it. Then he has the option in later life.
Please God, do not call a kid after a character related to Vin Diesel.

i love xander .its the best boys name.... its actually a really old name ....way before vin deisel film. .... if it goes with your surname then its a great choice.

Surely the best known Xander is the one in Buffy? (Am not familiar with the work of Mr Diesel.)
I like it personally - Alexander was on my list for a boy, with the option of that as a short version. DP might not have gone for it though, he does not share my love for the work of Joss Whedon.

I know a boy called Xander.

I would second the suggestion of calling him Alexander and then shortening it.

Love it - but then that's what ds1 is called! Well, to be honest he's Alexander but named after Xander in Buffy (refuses to be ...).

However he's got an entirely different nickname and is never called Xander - but as he gets older I think we'll probably call him Xander as that's what we intended to call him - just life and other nicknames got in the way!

My cousin has a boy she has called Xander, I think it's dreadful. His full name is Alexander which I think is a lovely name.

I like it as a shortened version of Alexander.

I chose my sons name (Alexander) knowing that Xander was one of the possible nicknames and loving it.

Would third fourth fifth sixth calling him Alexander and using Xander is a naickname though so he has the choice when he's bigger

thank you for your posts. will think about the alexander idea. see what dp thinks. he gets to chose girls name and i get to chose boys name, well ideas for them anyway.

it'll be a while yet as we aren't trying again for a couple of months, attempting to do the right thing and get a couple of bills paid off first.

thank you again to everyone.

good luck with friday sassybo

I think of a Mum who wanted to give birth to a superhero.

Only Lex tops Xander.

By the way Alexander is turning out to be a brilliant name - hopefully when he's older he'll be Xander but it's soooo cute when we hear his friends in the playground calling him Al! It's something we never call him but he seems to like it. Then there's Alex which he sometimes gets called, so lots of variety (hopefully not leading to split personality/confused child... )

I know a Xander, suits him very well, I like it.

How do you pronounce it? It looks like Ex-ander to me. Xavier is Ex-avier isn't it? Or have I been making fool of myself all these years .

I think its ok but only as a nickname. Would go for Alexander on the birth certificate.

I always thought that you pronounce the X as a zzz sound. I know a Xavier and a Xander and that is how they pronounce their names.

Report
bigstripeytiger · 27/07/2009 13:38

The X is pronounced as a Z AFAIK
