Owen comes back to your poets idea - you could therefore drop Wilfred into the mix - a good old English name. Time to go down the Oxford Dictionary of English Literature?

Elliot is nice.
Ethan too similar to Aidan IMO.

Argh argh argh. Thanks for all your suggestions. DH is saying no to Dashiell (which I am still so loving!) or Flynn/Finn so will have to convince him in the next 16 weeks or so!

He likes Elliot (which I don't mind, I kinda like the idea of naming DS2 after an English poet, any other suggestions?), kinda likes Ethan too. I think he mentioned a couple of others like Marcus (yeeks!), Sam, Morgan (what?), Kieran, Charlie and others that I didn't like enough to remember... LOL. This is going to be worse than naming DS1. I want to throw a strop and insists on naming DS2 Dashiell (DH says we are not French, uh, we are not Celtic/Irish either!). hmm

I like Lachlan too but it would be ludicrous with our surname.

Just asked DH about Dashiell (sp? I think Cate Blanchett named one of her sons Dashiell and spelt it like that?) and he made a face and then offered an alternate spelling Daschel? WTF? That looks like a dog breed! grin
Add message | Report | Contact poster By Fri 17-Jul-09 21:43:45
love Dashiel - Dash. Will DH accept though?
Lachlan is fab too.
Add message | Report | Contact poster By Fri 17-Jul-09 13:59:48
DH hates Ronan Keating with a passion so I don't think Ronan is ever going to fly with him... wink Will have a think about the other suggestions... Lachlan sounds nice but to me (I used to live in the land of Oz) always sounds real Aussie!
Ronan means "Little Seal"
I know Aidans who have brothers called Callum, Ronan and Ciaran.

Well I suppose there's Caspian. How about rivers? Or were you planning to be a bit more oblique?

Hope it's all going well.

Hi chandellina, glad you are here to join the fun... wink
Add message | Report | Contact poster By Fri 17-Jul-09 11:02:02
I'm really liking Dashiell at the moment. Is that wrong? I really like 'Dash' for short! Maybe it's just the hormones speaking... Anything that can be shortened to Dash? grin

Still in my shortlist:

Tristan (I guess it's the 'an' end, but having an 'an' ending does sound good with our surname!)
Matthew (Always loved the name but just too commonly used)
Flynn
Finn
Jonas (I love this but I think it's Scandinavian? Knew a guy with that name and it was pronounced 'Yo-nas', not sure how people would pronounce it here!)

I think I am overthinking this but as Aidan means 'little fire', I was trying to find a 'water' name to compliment but nothing struck me. This boy is going to end up with no name! Thanks for all your suggestions!

It's not weird to just have Finn. That is an Irish name in its own right.

Aidan and Finn is pretty good actually.

Killian is nice too (I hate the spelling Cillian, it doesn't make sense to me.)

What about Declan? Lorcan (although you are getting a lot of AN endings, aren't you?)
Add message | Report | Contact poster By Thu 16-Jul-09 15:29:39
Why is Aidan and Tristan too much?
I have an Aidan (well, Aiden) and Tristan was my top choice for our No 3, who turned out to be a girl.
Add message | Report | Contact poster By Wed 15-Jul-09 21:31:40
Finn and Ethan are definitely good with your surname.
Add message | Report | Contact poster By Fri 03-Jul-09 09:14:59
Cillian is pretty, it means 'strife'... Oh dear, with a little fire already in my life, I don't think I need that! grin

Really love Finn but not sure if it's too weird to just have Finn?

Love Ethan too. Patrick is coming up lots - a strong name to me but someone in the family is called Patrick so not sure about using it. Niall is gorgeous but good friend's little boy is already called that. Brodie is nice too but sounds too similar to our surname.

Not keen on Sean, Dominic, Brendan or Liam. Cuthbert definitely too unusual. Funny how certain names are popping up over and over again. Thanks all.
Aidan my ds is loving this thread but can't think of anything to go with Aidan except his own middle names - and I'm not sure either Paul or Russell (which also means red/firey - my Dad's name) - are what you are looking for!!

Expat I know 3 baby/small boy Struans, not counting yours!

A friend of mine has a Lewis Brodie (he's about 12 now) and I love saying it ... it rolls off the tongue fabulously in my nice Scottish accent!
I have heard of another Struan expat I think it's a fab name
Add message | Report | Contact poster By Fri 03-Jul-09 08:42:30
My first reaction was Cuthbert (both Northumbrian saints) but maybe that's a bit too unusual?! Or you could go for Bede . . .
Add message | Report | Contact poster By Thu 02-Jul-09 23:36:42
Wot, no Struans? There's only one other that I've heard of, even out here, where Gaelic and Scots names are popular.
I know two Callum and Aidans

Elliot (my virtual boys name)
Cameron
Connor
Sean
Ewan
Finlay

i really like brodie.

the only ethans i know are british, tbh.
Add message | Report | Contact poster By Thu 02-Jul-09 23:31:17
Dominic
Niall
Brendan
Patrick
Liam

DH (Aidan) is one of 5 boys and so the above are his middle name & his brothers' names!
I prefer Finn on its own to Finnegan.
I like Brodie too.
And always thought Ethan was lovely name, not too American for the UK.
Add message | Report | Contact poster By Thu 02-Jul-09 20:40:01
Cillian?

I'm not too keen on Finnegan, tbh. It sounds like something an American would name a child because it sounds Irish, but like something a real Irish person probably wouldn't name a child, IYKWIM.

Struan is a Scottish name, though.
Add message | Report | Contact poster By Thu 02-Jul-09 19:50:05
Oh dear, saw Dashiell on another thread and loving that too... Save me from myself! Meaning: French for page boy, not riverting is it? BTW, I've always loved that DS's name means little fire and he really does have a firecracker of a personality! grin
Add message | Report | Contact poster By Thu 02-Jul-09 19:43:33
Oh... Saw this on another thread... What do you think of Finnegan, Finn for short? Always loved the name after watching Great Expectations with the lovely Ethan (another beautiful name but I think too American?) Hawke (though not so lovely after he left Uma...). DH thinks it's too Irish? And I guess the meaning is fair, which I'm not sure we will get with our racial mix! LOL...
Another one we considered was Brodie. I too think Struan is a fabulous name!
Add message | Report | Contact poster By Thu 02-Jul-09 19:27:48
Struan is lovely! Quite unusual too. Hmmmmmm...

I do love lots of the irish boys' name but for some reason or the other, don't want to use them... I.e. (no offense to anyone suggesting them, just personal reasons...)

Malcolm - DH's ex-girlfriend's dad's name who is a lovely man but very slobby...

Liam, Callum - Just a wee bit too popular for me now...

Keiran is lovely but I don't know if it will go with our surname that starts with R so it could be a bit of a mouthful. Ditto for Connor.

Was talking to a colleague today about names and she said she never thought so much went into a name (she is unmarried and childless at the mo!). LOL.

Hi

I love all boys Irish names and have a couple on the list for future DS

Ryan
Aidan
Liam
Connor
Callum
Keiran

I also love Samuel & Lewis

Good luck
I have always thought Abet a lovely name
and it goes so well with Aidan...

Malcom?

Struan is a superb name, expat.
Add message | Report | Contact poster By Thu 02-Jul-09 16:24:26
I have a Struan. His middle name is David because I always liked the story of David.

Actually, I wanted to call him Levi because I like the story, but DH said no.
My Aidan is one of only 2 in the school - I like unusual but not ridiculously unusual names! Our other idea was Brendan but we went off that.

Our other dd is Katherine. So our girls have really straight down the line ordinary girls names, wheras ds has an Irish name (dh is Irish). But they all seem to go well together.

Congrats on your next little boy, btw!
Add message | Report | Contact poster By Thu 02-Jul-09 15:57:26
LOL weegiemum, would have liked to meet a little girl called Matthew... wink
Hooray - another Aidan's mummy!

Aidan is our middle child - he has an older and a younger sister. Dd2 would have been Matthew if she had been a boy but Rachel suited her better!
Add message | Report | Contact poster By Thu 02-Jul-09 15:00:33
Hmm... Not the same for the girls but someone did say that it seems there is a bigger choice with girls.

Love:

Sophia (too common now...)
Amelia (ditto with Sophia)
Mathilda

Good luck for the rest of your pregnancy!

Lewis got ruled out by my DH because of Hamilton! But my family are Scottish and it's a name I've liked for a long time.

No, we're not planning to find out in advance if it's a boy or a girl, though I confess I'm more tempted this time round. Due 10th Dec.

Girl's 2nd name would be Corinna but 1st name is strictly under wraps - sorry! However, here are other girls' names from our list 1st time round:

Tamsin
Helen
Meredith
Rhiannon
Add message | Report | Contact poster By Wed 01-Jul-09 22:46:42
Good taste BlueChampagne! LOL... I'm due early November. I have to say that out of your list, DH was keen on Lewis the first time round but I wasn't as I found out it was number 1 popular boy's name in Scotland and also with Lewis Hamilton just getting famous, I can imagine legions of Lewis out there very soon! When are you due and are you going to find out the gender of DC2? grin

Out of interest's sake, what are your girls' name, would be interesting to see if our choices would have matched!
Add message | Report | Contact poster By Wed 01-Jul-09 13:01:05
This could have been my post - DS1 is Aidan and DC2 is expected, so I will be following your thread with interest. Not peeking in advance but girls names are sorted.

Also on our list 1st time round were:
Justin
Lewis
Harvey
Morgan
Francis
Laurence

I also like Marcus but no positive vibes from DH on that score.

When are you due?

Haha TwoSunnyDays - I hadn't thought of that! Used to fancy him rotten circa Desperately Seeking Susan!!

Cuthbert is great

Avoid Quinn, Aiden Quinn is an actor I believe.
Add message | Report | Contact poster By Tue 30-Jun-09 13:51:48
Flynn seems to be coming up a lot... Interesting choice as I wouldn't have seen it as a popular one. It sounds very 'Zorro'! grin

Patrick is a 'strong' name - might consider that actually. Interestingly a friend of mine seriously considered Cormac for her DS but decided it was too 'obscure' and went for the now very popular Max!

LOL at titchy - DH will be very worried. I have cousins named Royce and Joyce on my side of the family so it's not beyond us... hmm at Cuthbert!

What about Oran then? Sounds kinda like Owen but is that wee bit different and imo very cool!

The Oran spelling is an accepted version so you wouldn't have to go with the (far too many consonants) Odhran spelling.

Or going away from the Irish connection how about

Noah
Elias
Jackson
Nevin (ok this one's Irish smile)
Quinn
Joseph
Ethan
Dylan

Neither DH and I are Irish blush, Aidan was just the only name we could agree on. LOL. So probably don't mind a non-Irish name.

thell - I am feeling your choices in the names so far! grin Nothing strikes me still though as 'the one'. Yet...

BunnyLebowski - I really like Owen. Aidan and Owen goes well together I think. But I have a good friend who has two brothers - you, you guess it - Aidan and Owen! LOL. The other names could be a bit too 'Irish' for me!

LilyBolero and jellybeans - Liking some of your suggestions too.

Am surprised at how many nice names are being suggested on this thread so far! Thanks all.
Well as Aidan is an Irish name I would say another Irish name would be the best fit.

I have 2 brothers. One is Aidan and the other Conan.

Tristan doesn't fit. It's too posh english. Lucas doesn't sound right either.

Name I would say that go are:

Eoin (the Irish version) or Owen
Patrick
Ciaran
Conor
Cillian
Daire (pronounced Dara)
Finbar
Lorcan
Niall
Odhran (pronounced Oran)
Oisin
Ronan
Ruairi
I think Tristan would be ok - it's not too similar at all.
Flynn does sound good too, and I love Elliot.

Cameron
Jude
Jolyon (Joe-lee-on)
Jesse (I like it, but I know dads aren't usually keen!)

gigglewitch - I think you have the right idea there. I do like Lucas but DH thinks it's an Italian-type name... Don't think I like Jeremy much but am liking all your other suggestions so far. grin
I was wandering in to say Luca or lucas... not normally something I'd pick but it somehow 'goes'. Also wondering Mark/Marcus, Matthew, and have no idea why but Jeremy....

Finlay won't do though it's a lovely name as DH's cousin already has a little boy with that name.

Surname starts with 'R' and always feel funny about having a first name ending with the first letter of surname... Is that silly?

Thanks for the suggestions so far!

We have a Connor Aidan (that's just the one DS) - so I think they go together perfectly!

Always loved the name Matthew but not sure if it's too common for me... Will still consider it though - Aidan and Matthew...

Don't think I am brave enough to do Flynn though it does sound good with our surname. Adam is a lovely name but DH doesn't want another A initial in the house! LOL.

Hi,

Found out today that DC2 is going to be a boy! We are really chuffed! DS1 is Aidan and we now need a boy's name to go with it. Surname ends with -lee sound and two syllabus so don't want any similar ending sound names. Also, his middle name will be two syllabus as well and a bit unusual as we are using something from my culture. And nothing too popular (though I can see Aidan is creeping up the popularity list hmm). I kinda think we ended up with the perfect name for DS1 so a bit short of ideas for DS2.

I really like Tristan but thinks Aidan and Tristan is a bit much. Like Owen as well but not 100% sold on it. Lucas I like but too popular now I think and DH not sold on that one... Yeeks! HELP! Thanks!
