Baby names

Official stats - are they really that important if you like a name?

Hi,
I'm new (but please don't hold it against me !) I have have DS2 due end of May and love the name Oliver (it is also a family name). DH is not keen as stats show it's been really popular over the last few years. We don't know any at all so does it really matter if I pick a name that's in the top 3 or will I commit a hideous crime and he'll hate me forever?!

Any help gratefully received...

if you love the name, use it

As above - you'll probably end up regretting it if you don't . I work in an infant school and at the moment we don't have 1 Oliver in school - I don't know if it is that popular?

If you like it that is all that matters. I don't think there are many around at the moment.

No if you like it then use it.
All names come in and out of fashion (well most of them!!)
Besides just because it is no 3 doesn't mean that there are thousands of Olivers, as there are so many names around iyswim

I wouldn't really be concerned about the 'official' stats, but it would put me off if I knew lots of children by the name.

Thank you everyone. I think it's my hormones making me anxious at the moment! You are of course right, I'll only regret it if I let that put me off. Now I just have to convince DH...

my DD1 has a name that everyone on here states is far too common/popular - I haven't heard another one and we love it

DD2 was given a name that we loved and we thought was less popular (not for that reason though) and we now know 3

you're damned if you do and you're damned if you don't so go with what you love

I chose dd1's name because I liked it. I didn't now quite how popular it was/was going to become. Now I wish I'd picked something else as I tire of her being called by her name and surname or surname initial all the time.

However, this could happen if you chose the wackiest name- and your neighbour just happened to have the same taste!
