In order, I like Esme, Jasmine, Scarlett, Darcey.

I love Esme

Darcey - no, bit masculine
Jasmine - quite like but she was a Bratz doll, not sure if it puts me off.
Esme - like this, but very urban chic. I also like, in the same style, Lois, Polly, Dulcie, Elsa, Annie and Greta.
Scarlett - not keen. Can't get past Scar. I like Amber, and Juliet though.

Esme pronounced Ezmee is the only way to do it I'm afraid! No such name as Esmay imho.

Agree!

Only like Esme and pronounced as it should be. Don't like tampering with pronunciations.

Ok, what do you think of the other names?

I'm afraid I don't like Darcy. I used to and I'm glad DH talked me out of it. Feel it is a bit aspirational. Also feel that DD will have to live up to names like Scarlett (be wild child), Jasmine (is a Bratz name now)

All the names I like are strong (for when they are grown up) but girly for when younger.ie, not Daisy, Fifi etc. I like Esme, Joanna, even Mary, Clara, Dorothy, Suzannah, Anna??

Esme is nice, Darcey yucky, Jasmine very common and Scarlett is cool. So, Scarlett for me I'm afraid (DS was very nearly a Scarlett so I have a huge amount of love for it).

I'm not keen on EsME, love Mary but its my mums name and we already used my mums middle name as a first name for DD1. Joanna is my dh's cousin. My name is very close to Clara and my middle name is also close to Anna.

Its spooky how you picked family names maple

They're all nice enough names.

I really love Jasmine. Always have.

I nearly added Dorothy - have you one of those too?

No Dorothy, you would have been safe there

I like Esmé best from your list,
but I would spell it with the inflection if you want people to pronounce it 'ezmay'

p.s. this is the way I would naturally pronounce it rather than ezmee

I don't like Esme at all. It is suddenly so popular and strikes me as a very faddy, middle-class-trying-to-be-different name. If you use it then don't think people will take any notice of how you wish it to be pronounced. They will prnounce it the way they are used to hearing it.

I like Scarlett because I heart Scarlett O'Hara.

Don't think Esme is faddy or middle class trying to hard at all, tis the nicest name in the world .

There should never ever be any Frenchy-fying of it with horrible accents etc. Tis not a French name. Tis Scottish.

Hmmmm

I quite like Darcey.
Scarlett is nice.
I like Esme as Ezmee not Esmay.
Jasmine is ok too.

Esme

DS1 would have been Jasmine if he'd been a girl, but I think it became a bit popular around here.

DeeBlindMice · 28/02/2009 20:13

esme is of French origin and is properly pronounced ez-may, not es-mee. I can't believe anyone would say es-mee, how weird. It has never even occurred to me that anyone would say it that way, and I've certainly never heard it pronounced so.

it can be a boys name as well as a girl's name traditionally. LOL at it being Scottish. Is it a Scots name or a Gaelic one? I'm struggling to pronounce it either way.

I really like Esme, but agree it's very now. Don't like Scarlett, Darcey, or Jasmine.
