Baby names

I think we need to change this topic's name to....

People names, or Adult names, or Man names or Woman names. Or KickAss lawyer names. Or Binman names. Or Teacher names. (oh god yes, teacher names."Miss Miss Miss - is your name REALLY TrixieBelle? REALLY, Miss?")

This might make people pause before they call their children names that only work for babies.

well...to me my Kids names are normal, but other people have described them as weird/hippy/eskimo names

LightShinesInTheDarkness · 04/02/2009 14:24

Go on, Fair Lady - what are they? I cannot bring to mind any eskimo names at all!

Woooozle100 · 04/02/2009 14:25

cool. Dyou have a child called nanook?

I think the point is that we (luckily) all have different tastes and a name someone finds chavvy/posh/weird, someone else may love. We also all come from different backgrounds/cultures/countries, so all have different associations.

I wonder whether we should have this Topic at all...?

well, es is Sven, ms is Yannic (he was the one where my fil said abot it being an Eskimo name...it isn't btw ) and ys is Flynn, which is decidely normal, I'd say....however, his name is often misspelled and stuff

we according to MN I have given DD1 a name thats too common/overused
DD2 a name thats chav and sounds like a prostitute and
DD3 a boys name

non of which bothers me as they all suit them, it was my choice, they are my kids and thats that

Oh Dizzy can we play a guessing game?

According to NM, DS1 is too common and I shouldnt have used DD's name because I am not Irish

Perhaps seeker should set up shop as a professional baby namer she does seem to think that she's the only person with enough scruples to name a child.

It takes all kinds I say! let them name their children what they want!

apparently seeker is the boss of these threads
why is it your 'work' to ensure mnetters give their children names that you approve of?

Report
seeker · 04/02/2009 17:22

I have always felt that I was born to do some great work for the benefit of humanity....at last I have found it. I will not cease from mental strife (not shall my word sleep in my hand) until every child in the country is given a name that they can speak with pride, and which will never cause them to kick the bedcovers with embarrassment at 2 in the morning when they are 15!

lol seeker
and lol at teh seriousness of some people...I can't get upset about people disagreeing with my choice of name, I really can't....

Report
dragonbutter · 04/02/2009 17:28

so get a job down the registry office and refuse to register any names you disapprove of.

you spend a lot of time on baby names threads, always saying the same thing. aren't you bored yet?

seeker - you are DULL

FairLady I think the vast majority of us have grasped the concept of other people disagreeing with our name choices. It's just the insistence that we couldn't possibly name a child what we wish as per Seeker's rules that gets real old real quick!

seeker · 04/02/2009 17:34

That's an excellent idea, dragonbutter - but I think I'd have to move to France. They let you call your child Dweezel Moonunit in this country!

Soubraniecocktai (I used to like the pink ones) No I'm not!

Well I think you are. And intolerant.

Report
seeker · 04/02/2009 17:39

Which rule do you disagree with? The one abotu calling your child something that might make them unhappy, or the one that says you shouldn't call your child someth5ng that will make people judge the0 negatively?

I could give you a list of unusual names - names where your child would probably be the only one in the school that fit the rules. No need to be dull!

fwiw the woman registering ds1 told me his name wasn't on her list. i told her it was on mine and we registered him.
he has a scottish spelling of a scottish name.
it really isn't that odd.

so you might be just as frustrated in that job too.

frasersmum123 - I fear I'm at a disadvantage considering your MN name but feel free to carry on and guess mine if you like

Seeker are you willing to share your children's name?
If people are going to take advice from you we will need to judge you skill at naming.

Report
kayzr · 04/02/2009 17:42

Apparently DS1's name is posh and prententious and the only thing anyone has said to me about DS2's name is that it is extremely welsh.
