What do people think of Theo, and what middle name would you put with it?

I like Theo Joseph, but im not blown away by it.

bluebump Tue 03-Feb-09 13:41:08

Well I have a Theo so I say yes and i'll ignore any bad comments that may come further down! We have a Theo Harry Ethan (long story as to why so many middle names..) so his initial are THE and his surname is an animal which is always a talking point, especially as we were the only ones not to twig this as we'd not written it down before we decided on it! smile

violethill Tue 03-Feb-09 13:41:59

Theo is great as an abbreviation but isn't a name in its own right - it's short for Theodore.

Nice though

GossipMonger Tue 03-Feb-09 13:42:43

Love it.

Wanted it for ds2 but DH vetoed it.

Theo David

Theo John

Theo Michael

Theo Benjamin

Theo Anthony

Lots go with Theo. smile

Leo9 Tue 03-Feb-09 13:43:18

Lovely name.

Theo Edward?
Theo James?
Theo William?

I think 'traditional' middle names sound nice. Though TBH I wouldn't bother with a middle name unless you use a family one or find one you absolutely love.

PoloPlayingMummy Tue 03-Feb-09 13:44:32

I think it's a lovely name! Think it's become a name in it's own right tbh, a bit like Harry

I love it too - dd2 would have been Theo if she'd been a boy.

kayzr Tue 03-Feb-09 14:34:59

I love it too.

We were going to call DS2 Dylan George Theo but it was a bit of a long name. But it is on our list if we have another boy.

It's the best name ever, but I am biased grin

violethill - it is a name in it's own right, obviously it is a diminutive but by use has become a stand alone name I reckon...Theodore or worse Theobald don't do it for me...
most lovely is when French people pronounce the name

NonStopChatter Tue 03-Feb-09 14:41:46

Is it pronounced T-O or TH-O?

gingertoo Tue 03-Feb-09 14:42:17

Really lovely name. DS has a Theo in his class. The only downside I've noticed is that a few of his classmates called him 'Feo' due to problems with the 'th' sound. Suppose that can happen with loads of names tho.

Wolfblass Tue 03-Feb-09 14:43:41

I belive it would be pronounced Thee-O?

Maybe i am wrong?

I think it's lovely!

Theo Lewis
Theo Joseph
Theo James
Theo William
Theo George

Thee O but Tay o in French...

jellybeans Tue 03-Feb-09 15:04:04

I love it

Amandoh Tue 03-Feb-09 15:12:03

My DS3 is a Theo so a yes vote from me. He's often complimented on his name.

We plumped for the full version of Theodore on his birth certificate but we've never called him that. Actually (Cring alert!) I recall calling him "Theodorable" a few times when he was smaller. I was sleep deprived, ok!

thumbwitch Tue 03-Feb-09 15:13:09

I like Theodore --> Theo, or Teddy.

I have a Theo, and he is just Theo, not Theodore.
I wanted his middle name to be Alexander, because I thought they went well, but agreed to him having his dads name instead, so he is Theo Kamran.
Wish I hadn't now, as his dad hasn't seen him for 6 years.

Ted or Teddy is cute too !

RachieB Tue 03-Feb-09 16:43:31

love love love it
(bit not Theodore!)

BonsoirAnna Tue 03-Feb-09 16:44:53

Nice, but very, very popular in France. So I wouldn't use it myself.

suwoo Tue 03-Feb-09 16:52:16

I love it and really wanted it for this pg, but like gingertoo mentioned further up the thread, DH can't say TH and would pronounce it Feo too lazy bastard wink.

Wheelybug Tue 03-Feb-09 16:56:37

I really like it and wanted it for a boy if current bump is a boy but apparently it has got really popular because of some footballer which put me right of it. Nice name though !

CornBreadQueen Tue 03-Feb-09 16:58:38

i absolutely love the name Theo but DH hates it because it's the name a kid that beat him up when he was 6 sad

MrsMattie Tue 03-Feb-09 17:03:57

DD would probably have been Theo if she'd been a boy. DH did have slight 'Walcott' fears - 'it's gonna be very popular, innit?' I think he said. But it's a lovely name, and I don't agree at all that you have to use Theodore. Leo is originally short for Leonard, but you wouldn't, would you? grin

twinsetandpearls Tue 03-Feb-09 17:16:15

Lovely name.

Love the name Theo

I have a Thea!

Thunderduck Tue 03-Feb-09 18:23:01

I love Theo.

bluebump Tue 03-Feb-09 18:24:54

My Theo was going to be a Thea if he was a girl!

Thea is lovely

Drum Tue 03-Feb-09 18:37:06

If I had a son he would be Theo. Lovely.

Qally Tue 03-Feb-09 18:40:57

I also wanted Theo but got vetoed by DH. It's lovely.

2Helenback Tue 03-Feb-09 19:59:34

Love it, but had to reject along with Seth as DH can only say th if really concentrates, so poor kid would be Feo or Seff most of the time. Check close family and friends for speech impediments!

NonStopChatter Tue 03-Feb-09 21:19:41

Same as Helan. Even with practice dh isnt improving. I've had to rule out Ethan as well. I cant stand a lifetime of listening to 'Efan'

RiaParkinson Tue 03-Feb-09 21:23:48

eekamoose Tue 03-Feb-09 21:33:00

Oh its a lovely name. It would have been dd's name (born 2001) had she been a boy.

BUT by the time we did have a DS (2003) we decided against Theo because they were springing up everywhere.

Its a lovely name, but there are lots of them about nowadays ime.

(Speaking as one whose girl and a boy both have names currently in the top 2 or 3 most "common" names in the UK. Sigh.)

Mutt Tue 03-Feb-09 21:34:36

No. Theo is a big, fat Greek bloke.

<disclaimer: nowt actually wrong with big, fat or Greek blokes - just wouldn't want one peering out of a cot at me>

CandleQueen Tue 03-Feb-09 21:35:31

DS2 was going to be Theo as a "Birth Certificate" name because I wanted to call him Teddy. But when he was born he was too much of a big bruiser to be a Teddy. So he's called Dewi Henry Theo.

NorkyButNice Tue 03-Feb-09 21:37:30

DS is Theo Adam (not Theodore).

It is climbing the popularity charts but still isn't in the top 50, so there aren't all that many - depends what circles you mix in I suppose.

There aren't any others at DS's very large nursery, nor amongst our circle of toddler acquaintances.

MrsSeanBean Tue 03-Feb-09 21:39:25

I love Theo. I see it as a short form of Theophilus. Theo(philus) Henry James is nice.

RiaParkinson Tue 03-Feb-09 21:40:43

my theodore 1996 got there before the crowds!

Katonahottinroof Wed 04-Feb-09 00:05:39

I think it's lovely.

Theo William
Theo James
Theo Patrick

my Theo was 1997 ! still the only one in his primary and secondary school, though there is a Theodore - but his name is never shortened.

RiaParkinson Wed 04-Feb-09 17:19:40

great minds Maryannsingleton!

grin !

CherryChoc Wed 04-Feb-09 18:00:05

It reminds me of Theo Paphitis - but I think I spend too much time watching reruns of Dragons Den on Dave!

There was a boy at my primary school who had a brother called Theo, I liked it then. He would have been born... um... 1990 ish?

uh,yes, ds does get called that by a friend smile

thumbwitch Thu 05-Feb-09 15:01:42

on the strength of this thread, I asked DH what he thought of the name Theodore (should we have another son) and he likes it too - hurrah!

nulgirl Thu 05-Feb-09 15:04:11

Love it. V popular in france at the mo - is a top 10 name. Is pronounced Tay-o there though

RiaParkinson Thu 05-Feb-09 18:24:28

dp calls our Theodore 'Tay -o' so much cooler

wotulookinat Thu 05-Feb-09 18:31:03

Yes, Theo is cool.

Mutt Thu 05-Feb-09 19:39:13

Ria..."Tay-o?" lol

Surely that's just poncetastic.

lunamoon2 Thu 05-Feb-09 19:51:13

Personally no I do not like it

RiaParkinson Thu 05-Feb-09 21:16:27

mutt! grin

dp is the antithesis of poncetastic so he gets away with it!

cakewench Sat 14-Feb-09 15:33:12

I love the name. :D I was considering it but I think we'll be sticking with our original choice, Tobias.

Also- Germans pronounce it Tay-o as well! My husband is from Germany and when I originally suggested the name, he popped up with some song that I now can't get out of my head. in case you're interested.

Jenf2306 Mon 16-Feb-09 14:38:05

i love theo - but my partner didn't. good job with had a girl or i would have argued with him.

its a lovely name

curvychick Mon 16-Feb-09 16:51:05

I love the name Theo and wanted it for ds2 and ds3.........everyone i knew kept going on about the guy from the cosby show and saying it was a name for a black baby shock In the end i was too much of a wimp to stick to my guns and go for Theo as everyone seemed so aginst it......but ds 3 did end up as Leo! If i had had my way though, he would have been Theo Jude.

with dc4, we will be keeping our name ideas to ourself wink
