Just come across this, what do you think? For a boy of course. It's a bit like Tarquin but not so foppish I thought.

ninedragons Fri 09-Jan-09 05:11:03

It sounds like something from Ikea.

2toddlersandme Fri 09-Jan-09 06:37:16

Is it actually a name?

It sounds like one of those words expert Scrabble players pull out of the hat.

HelenBurns Fri 09-Jan-09 06:39:47

no

sorry, not keen.

Buda Fri 09-Jan-09 06:40:04

No. Just no. Sorry. Sounds totally pretentious.

HelenBurns Fri 09-Jan-09 06:42:35

Does it have a meaning you like?

freyapoodle Fri 09-Jan-09 09:08:28

It is an old surname apparently.

MrsBadger Fri 09-Jan-09 09:11:03

no

even Tarquin is better

LOl - thanks for that, hilarious. grin

Bluestocking Fri 09-Jan-09 09:17:21

Reminds me of Farquaad from Shrek. Not good.

claireybrations Fri 09-Jan-09 09:18:49

I somehow miss out the quan when I read it so can't help but read it as turd, sorry

MrsBadger Fri 09-Jan-09 09:19:48

actually I read the title and thought you'd planned to call a girl Turquoise and it had turned out to be a boy...

freyapoodle Fri 09-Jan-09 09:20:53

Oh dear, nobody seems to like this much. I like Tarquin but I thought it was a bit of a joke name now.

nailpolish Fri 09-Jan-09 09:22:32

ridiculous, sorry

OneLieIn Fri 09-Jan-09 09:28:04

I'm laughing sorry - it is ridiculous.

LouMacca Fri 09-Jan-09 09:40:55

I can't believe you are serious? hmm

moondog Fri 09-Jan-09 09:41:21

You are fucking joking?

OrmIrian Fri 09-Jan-09 09:41:59

?

FanjoForTheMammaries Fri 09-Jan-09 09:42:31

It is without a doubt the most pretentious name I have ever heard in my entire life, I'm afraid!

shangelcharlie Fri 09-Jan-09 10:12:44

Yuk, how about Farquaar grin

MrsBadger Fri 09-Jan-09 10:18:16

Try pretenious surnames-as-first-names eg Kingsley, Rudyard

fgpl Fri 09-Jan-09 10:27:29

WTF ?

Nancy66 Fri 09-Jan-09 10:53:09

Absolutely awful

HelenBurns Fri 09-Jan-09 11:21:51

Oy! MrsB I'll have you know Rudyard is ds's middle name! It's not pretentious! It's just a nice name. smile

which he will hate me for

PrimulaVeris Fri 09-Jan-09 11:27:13

Just lovin' these baby names threads today [grin}

PuppyMonkey Fri 09-Jan-09 11:28:34

I tell you what, the baby names threads have been particularly brilliant today haven't they? PMSL grin

PuppyMonkey Fri 09-Jan-09 11:29:19

Oops, sorry Primula, you beat me to it.. But I got the grin right.. wink

MrsBadger Fri 09-Jan-09 11:31:54

I know it's nice hence why I suggested it wink

I thought it'd be more likely to go down well with the OP than James / Jack / Edward / Thomas etc

Isambard?
Harper?
Fletcher?
Tiberius?

PrimulaVeris Fri 09-Jan-09 11:33:44

grin PM!
blush

Fimbo Fri 09-Jan-09 11:34:14

Oh dear surely it will be shortened to Turd??

OrmIrian Fri 09-Jan-09 14:06:56

I think it will be shortened to Wand - which might be unfortunate.

FranSanDisco Fri 09-Jan-09 14:09:21

It really wouldn't be fair to use that name on a child.

or it may even be shortened to Turd.....

sorry - just saw Fimbo's post grin

MrsArchieTheInventor Fri 09-Jan-09 14:18:06

The question is do you like it? And would you feel a twat shouting out the name when your son is playing football at school, as in "man on, Turquand!"

p.s. How do you pronounce it??

Yeah, bit too weird.

How about St John? (pronounced sin-jun)

I don't mind Tarquin, actually, it's certainly better than Turquand, imo.

bangandthedirtisgone Fri 09-Jan-09 14:21:52

But Kipling was Rudyard's surname MrsB.

silverfairy Fri 09-Jan-09 14:36:10

It's not that bad, lots of inverse snobbery on here today (just seen on Octavia post too).

OrmIrian Fri 09-Jan-09 15:31:34

I don't think it's inverse snobbery. It's just a daft name IMO. I'd feel the same if it was a 'chavvy' name.

MrsBadger Fri 09-Jan-09 16:21:36

yes, exactly
see also Kingsley Amis

BabyBaby123 Fri 09-Jan-09 16:36:04

god, it's awful

please don't - agree sounds like turd, first thing I thought of

Teab0y Thu 12-Feb-09 01:11:54

i just came across this when I googled my own name, my surname is "turquand".

I have registered to the site purely add my 2p and say that you should definately be calling ALL your children "Turquand".

Califrau Thu 12-Feb-09 01:22:22

Just NO

minouminou Thu 12-Feb-09 23:22:43

Wow. Even I don't like it.
It's a good surname, though....so maybe I do like it............a bit
Sort of.

Ronaldinhio Thu 12-Feb-09 23:25:32

A joke, non?

rasputin Thu 04-Jun-09 20:26:00

The Lord and the Stable Girl (extract, p.123)

Viktor Turquand stormed up tto the stabel block shouting. He stood with his legs apart and growled at the young and very attractive girl stood in front of him. He angrily hit his taut thigh with his limited edition riding crop.

"I told you to bring me my horse immediately" he hissed.

Jocelyn Howard swooned and felt her heart begin to beat faster.

Lord Turquand lazily looked at her long, long legs. His blue eyes flashed in his healthy tanned face.

He was so masterful, why did she have to work for such an arrogant man? and why did she want him so much? She flicked her blonde hair off her pert chest and ...yada yada yada

nkf Thu 04-Jun-09 20:26:35

That's the best yet.

rasputin Thu 04-Jun-09 20:26:56

stable of course!

magbags Thu 04-Jun-09 20:52:55

Err, no. Awful.

barnsleybelle Thu 04-Jun-09 20:58:13

Really don't like it... sorry

melll Fri 14-Aug-09 15:01:24

turd

Paolosgirl Fri 14-Aug-09 15:15:50

Not as foppish are Tarquin? Are you living in the same world as the rest of us?!

It's awful. You know it is.

HerHonesty Fri 14-Aug-09 15:19:05

not to my taste.

ohnelly Fri 14-Aug-09 18:51:22

No way!!!

piscesmoon Fri 14-Aug-09 19:03:37

Are you sure it is a name-and not someone who can't spell?

mathanxiety Fri 14-Aug-09 19:25:32

No, too like turban, turd, torquay, turkey... Please keep on looking.

kittywise Fri 14-Aug-09 19:29:11

no

stuffitlllama Fri 14-Aug-09 19:31:48

lol

you are mad

and i have at least one of the other allegedly pretentious names on this thread

but you are still mad and bad for giving this headroom

MaggieBeauLeo Fri 14-Aug-09 19:34:13

Turd for short.

GibbonInARibbon Fri 14-Aug-09 19:41:25

Never. Ever.

pixiestix Sun 16-Aug-09 14:19:27

No, no no no. Just no.
Bloody awful.

mrswoolf Sun 16-Aug-09 14:40:05

Tarquin is preferable, just.

seeker Sun 16-Aug-09 14:42:24

TurquandCacos - it's an archipelago in the Pacific.

startingagainafter14years Tue 03-Nov-09 19:47:51

Ooh. I love strange names but that one sounds awful. I think you have to find the name by the meaning it has for you....

I've just had a baby boy (20 days) and we've named him "Blaze". A lot of people say it sounds like a Super Hero (which I agree with!) but for me it means "Uncontrolable Fire" which is a great way to explain the love he makes me feel and how it burns through me uncontrolably.

Also - I don't think Blaze would get so much stick at school as Turquand...!

JoeyBettany Thu 05-Nov-09 10:50:17

I think Turquand and Shelmerdine would make a lovely couple grin

birdofthenorth Thu 05-Nov-09 11:28:49

Sounds like Turqoise Wand. So many teasing opportunities.

And what would his nn be? Turq (turk)? Quand?!

Even more pretentious than Tarquin in my view, sorry!

birdofthenorth Thu 05-Nov-09 11:29:57

PS Startingagain... I like Blaze!

voulezvou Thu 05-Nov-09 15:26:09

One word.

NO!

boodleboot Thu 05-Nov-09 16:23:14

Tur - d is the NN that springs to mind.....wink

skydancer1 Fri 06-Nov-09 09:47:48

Sorry but it sounds like a brand of turps or possibly Turkish delights.

Abubu Fri 06-Nov-09 11:59:07

He'll be made fun of for the rest of his life....

madlizzi Sat 05-Dec-09 22:51:18

excuse me whilst i have a tena-lady moment

AliceSung Mon 25-Jan-10 11:18:09

Terrible! You would need to be a Lord to pull that name off!

ChippingIn Mon 25-Jan-10 11:39:01

Ummm NO, you couldn't do that to a child you loved - surely!?

Squishabelle Mon 25-Jan-10 11:53:07

Its a joke.

jennycd Sun 13-Jun-10 20:01:32

I don't think it's foppish (like Tarquin) at all. But, it sounds to me like a tough, African American rapper's name. I'm picturing twins- Turquand and Tyrone :-)

scottishmummy Sun 13-Jun-10 20:04:01

sounds like a colour chart swatch.tarquand is the new turquoise

CoupleofKooks Sun 13-Jun-10 20:07:03

turquand is really something
come back if you have any more ideas, we all need to hear them

Hedwig3 Sun 13-Jun-10 20:23:22

My first thought was that Farquaar and Tarquin had been mixed together.

mathanxiety Sun 13-Jun-10 20:52:12

Not again. Thought this had been laid to rest in January.
