Just come across this, what do you think? For a boy of course. It's a bit like Tarquin but not so foppish I thought.
It sounds like something from Ikea.

Is it actually a name?
It sounds like one of those words expert Scrabble players pull out of the hat.

No. Just no. Sorry. Sounds totally pretentious.

I somehow miss out the quan when I read it so can't help but read it as turd, sorry

actually I read the title and thought you'd planned to call a girl Turquoise and it had turned out to be a boy...

Oh dear, nobody seems to like this much. I like Tarquin but I thought it was a bit of a joke name now.

It is without a doubt the most pretentious name I have ever heard in my entire life, I'm afraid!

Try pretenious surnames-as-first-names eg Kingsley, Rudyard
HelenBurns
Fri 09-Jan-09 11:21:51
Oy! MrsB I'll have you know Rudyard is ds's middle name! It's not pretentious! It's just a nice name.
which he will hate me for
Just lovin' these baby names threads today [grin}
I tell you what, the baby names threads have been particularly brilliant today haven't they? PMSL
Oops, sorry Primula, you beat me to it.. But I got the
right..
MrsBadger
Fri 09-Jan-09 11:31:54
I know it's nice hence why I suggested it
I thought it'd be more likely to go down well with the OP than James / Jack / Edward / Thomas etc
Isambard?
Harper?
Fletcher?
Tiberius?

Fri 09-Jan-09 11:34:14
Oh dear surely it will be shortened to Turd??
I think it will be shortened to Wand - which might be unfortunate.
FranSanDisco
Fri 09-Jan-09 14:09:21
It really wouldn't be fair to use that name on a child.
or it may even be shortened to Turd.....
sorry - just saw Fimbo's post

Fri 09-Jan-09 14:18:06
The question is do you like it? And would you feel a twat shouting out the name when your son is playing football at school, as in "man on, Turquand!"
p.s. How do you pronounce it??
Yeah, bit too weird.
How about St John? (pronounced sin-jun)
I don't mind Tarquin, actually, it's certainly better than Turquand, imo.
bangandthedirtisgone
Fri 09-Jan-09 14:21:52
But Kipling was Rudyard's surname MrsB.

Fri 09-Jan-09 14:36:10
It's not that bad, lots of inverse snobbery on here today (just seen on Octavia post too).
I don't think it's inverse snobbery. It's just a daft name IMO. I'd feel the same if it was a 'chavvy' name.
MrsBadger
Fri 09-Jan-09 16:21:36
yes, exactly
see also Kingsley Amis
please don't - agree sounds like turd, first thing I thought of

i just came across this when I googled my own name, my surname is "turquand".
I have registered to the site purely add my 2p and say that you should definately be calling ALL your children "Turquand".
Wow. Even I don't like it.
It's a good surname, though....so maybe I do like it............a bit
Sort of.
The Lord and the Stable Girl (extract, p.123)
Viktor Turquand stormed up tto the stabel block shouting. He stood with his legs apart and growled at the young and very attractive girl stood in front of him. He angrily hit his taut thigh with his limited edition riding crop.
"I told you to bring me my horse immediately" he hissed.
Jocelyn Howard swooned and felt her heart begin to beat faster.
Lord Turquand lazily looked at her long, long legs. His blue eyes flashed in his healthy tanned face.
He was so masterful, why did she have to work for such an arrogant man? and why did she want him so much? She flicked her blonde hair off her pert chest and ...yada yada yada

Ooh. I love strange names but that one sounds awful. I think you have to find the name by the meaning it has for you....
I've just had a baby boy (20 days) and we've named him "Blaze". A lot of people say it sounds like a Super Hero (which I agree with!) but for me it means "Uncontrolable Fire" which is a great way to explain the love he makes me feel and how it burns through me uncontrolably.
Also - I don't think Blaze would get so much stick at school as Turquand...!
I think Turquand and Shelmerdine would make a lovely couple

Thu 05-Nov-09 11:28:49
Sounds like Turqoise Wand. So many teasing opportunities.
And what would his nn be? Turq (turk)? Quand?!
Even more pretentious than Tarquin in my view, sorry!

I don't think it's foppish (like Tarquin) at all. But, it sounds to me like a tough, African American rapper's name. I'm picturing twins- Turquand and Tyrone :-)
