Baby names

How long until you had a name?

pinsanon · 20/12/2008 16:37

Daughter is 2 weeks old 2moro and still doesn't have a name (I'm dad). We had some names on a shortlist before the birth, but none feel quite right . Not quite sure when a decision will be made.

I know we have 6 weeks by law, but I figured you were supposed to have a name even if it took a while to register.

Any one else taken a while to choose a name?

Cheers

DD was 4 days old when she finally had a name. Before that she was just "baby" "darlin" etc.

No, i knew what i wanted to call DD all the way though my pregnancy but when she arrived and after i had announced it to the delivery room i go though feelings of it 'not being quite right'. To be honest i worried for about a week that we'd called her the wrong name.

We didnt change it, i love it now and it really suits her. I know if have been gutted if we had changed it as was on my fantasy baby list from childhood.

I dont know if its normal to go though feelings like that really, it probably is though.

I have heard of babies being called 'boy' or 'girl' or just 'baby' for 6 weeks and the name being decided on the way to the registry office though so it's obviously not just you

Good luck and congratulations

I picked out dd's name aged 4. Always knew what my daughter would be called. Luckily, she suits it.

Was it TC who didn't know what to call her dd on the day of the 6 week deadline?

DD2 was more than 3 weeks old before we named her!

We actually chose her middle name on the spur of the moment when the Registrar asked us if we were having one!

More than SIX WEEKS!!! We had to have the registration period extended!
None of our list names seemed right, and in the end we went for a totally different one. It was v embarrassing at the time but I'm very very pleased now.

We chose on day three or four for both. Had to try out a few to see what seemed best .

3 hours! I wanted to text people, how sad am I. We knew we were having a girl which helped but only decided on a middle name after 3 hours (at 2am, post epidural!)

but it took 3 months for the name to suit her, until then she was "baby bean", she grew in to the name.

To Liffey..

I like Violet, Harriet & Charlotte (probably in that order), the wife likes Rose, Ella and Emily (no order). It's not whether other people like the names (as it doesn't really matter), we're just both waiting for a name that jumps off the page and we both like it. Trouble is, it doesn't seem to be happening!

The wife wishes she saw the baby as Violet as the name means a lot to me, but she says she just doesn't. I'm working on her, but these things take time (apparently!).

Mum and baby both doing fine, so I suppose that's the important thing, but would be nice to have a name for Christmas! As I said on another thread our son's nursery application had "to be confirmed" as his sister's name

Oooh right, So you like very classic female versions of male classics and she likes what's in the top ten!! sorry! I will find that tiny piece middle-ground where your tastes overlap! I hope.

I love Violet btw, What about Vivien? or Eve? JUST Eve not Evie!? All Softer than Violet I think. And what about Juliet? Like that, and it's more approachable than Violet (to an Emily/Ella-lover)

I like Rose, but it's become so popular it washes over me now without leaving any impression. I think Rosemary sounds more solid, less susceptible to fashion cycles iyswim. Rosemary could be crusty enough for you and cute enough for her if you use the nns, Rose Rosie or Romy.

Ella is a bit blah imo. Not quite enough of it though. JMO. I would like to know that an Ella had Annabella, Estella or Gabriella on her birth cert! I like to think you can adapt your name slightly to grow up alongside you. Or what about Eva instead of Ella? Sounds older I think. Eva was my Grandma's name.

Harriet is ugly. One of the worst mens' names adapted for women imo. Georgia is lovely one though. I don't dislike all female versions of male names.

Leading on to Charlotte. Charlotte is ok, but there are millions of them. I do love the nn Lottie though! That is so gorgeous.

If your wife likes Emily what about Jemima or Romilly? The have something of the feel of Emily in them I think!

Is it that you dislike her names, or that you think they're too popular, too ordinary??

Other suggestions that spring to mind; Elizabeth with Eliza or Beth for short, both pretty and Elizabeth could be Eli or Ella for short I suppose.

Susannah, very classic and old, nn Susie

Margaret - Maggie/Greta/Margot

I also like Marianne, it has a stuffy Jane Austen feel. But is still very pretty.

ps, I agree that baby has to grow into name! My baby girl looked like a pookieboo for the first six months. Glad I didn't go with that. For ages, her name seemed ludicrously mature for a pink dribbly chubby fluffy creature.

DC1 - 3 weeks
DC2 - 6 weeks
DC3 - 6 weeks, changed it 12 months later.

We are not good at choosing names.

dd1 was 3 weeks and 2 days but that was because dh was underwater in a submarine till she was 2 weeks old when he phoned me and that was when he found out that I had had the baby and it was a girl
then he came home a weeks later and we choose the name together

dd2 was a couple of days old
dd3 was more than three weeks too

we had real trouble finding more girls names we wanted

all of them have a middle name too

I am named after a literary character. My parents discovered that they both loved this book on their first date, and decided that if they ever had a daughter, that is what they would call me. So I had my name about 3 years before I was born!

DS1 and 2 we knew as soon as we knew they were boys at the 20 week scans, already had them lined up. This one is coming on Boxing Day (being induced) and we have no idea...

BikeRunSki, you can't not tell us! At least tell us the book and we'll work out which is the character they must have both loved. You can not tell us half a lovely story!

DD had a name 4 mo before she was born but it felt odd to actually use it when she was born for a few days. I was glad I'd had one picked out for a girl since I started being hassled for a middle name soon after! Thinking of more than one name post birth would have been quite a strain.

Report
BikeRunSki · 21/12/2008 11:25

And with DS, I had a longstanding favorite boys name. Once we knew he was a boy from the 20 week scan, we agreed that that is what he would be. It is also a family name on both sides of DH's family, so it suited all round.

I'll take on board all your criticism of the wife's choices and completely ignore anything negative levied against my suggestions .

Seriously though, if baby names were chosen as a result of people's interweb opinions, no baby would ever have a name!

Thanks for trying to find some middle-ground though, sadly we're both way more stubborn that that

I can't believe you wouldn't name your baby on the strength of some random internet sprites!!!

Ok, I've programmed your details into my machine and re-calibrated it to account for two stubborn buggers with different tastes and the machine spat out 'Phoebe' and then malfunctioned under the pressure.

Did your wife read the post too? Are neither of you budging at all? you both still have the same short list of three!!?
