Tarian

It's welsh for 'shield', have heard it used as a name twice recently (one male one female) and it's bumped it's way into my favourites list, probably as a boy's name.

How would you shorten/nickname it? Or do you think it wouldn't get nicknamed, it is lovely as it is anyway.

And - do you like it/what do you think?

Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
CharleeInChains · 20/11/2008 14:00

How is it pronounced?

Swedes · 20/11/2008 14:00

T, pronounced tee.

nickytwotimes · 20/11/2008 14:00

It is lovely.
Might get shortened to Tari - I know one who is.

artichokes · 20/11/2008 14:01

It remins me of Tarzan (maybe it is pronouced differently). I think it might get shortened to Tar.

PixieMoon · 20/11/2008 14:05

Kinda sounds like 'ta-ree-yan' three syllables but the last two are a bit more squished together so not really.....I'm only a learner welsh speaker, but that's how the people's names sounded.

I like Tari. Oooh definite new top 5 lol.

What do you reckon more boy or girl?

more like 'ta-riyan'.....i'm no good at writing phonetically!

cupsoftea · 20/11/2008 14:07

tari is nice for the short name

Swedes · 20/11/2008 14:09

I think the correct Welsh pronouciation is TaryGavinflairpooftreehousegogogoch-y-an.

Lionstar · 20/11/2008 14:09

I like it, and would shorten to Tari
Taryn is a similar Welsh girls name (which I also love)

Romy7 · 20/11/2008 14:12

might get shortened to 'rhian', which if a girl would get altered to rhianne, or (not my fave) ryan if a boy.
'rian' cool shortening with a welsh accent though...
tari ok shortening for a girl, but maybe sounds like you're trying too hard? those not in the know would 'correct' to 'tori' i expect...

MadreInglese · 20/11/2008 14:12

You might end up with 'Taz' as a nick name

CharleeInChains · 20/11/2008 14:12

Maybe just shortened to T or Tee.

My firend Tigan (pronounced Teegan) is called T all the time!

PixieMoon · 20/11/2008 14:16

lol@Swedes yes thats how I feel at Welsh class most weeks!

'Rian' does sound nice spoken Welsh-ly. Most of the people I know called Rhian/Rhiannon get called just 'Rhi' for short I guess 'Ri' would be another possibility. 'Taz' sounds like a hockey-team nickname possibiliy!!!

Tegan is one of my fave girls names too.

Romy7 · 20/11/2008 14:43

i love tegan. but it is truly ludicrous with my (welsh) surname lol.

BlueChampagne · 20/11/2008 17:30

When I see/hear Tegan I can only think only think of the Dr Who assistant - showing my age here perhaps

Fimbo · 20/11/2008 17:31

Tee, Tar or Taz
