One of us thinks this name is unique, powerful and fabulous. The other of us thinks the kid would end up hiding under his desk and avoiding bus queues for the whole of his school career (and probably beyond).

Thorold.

What do you think, given neither of us is of Norse/Scandinavian extraction? You can be honest as if you disagree I will not be showing this to DP anyway...

I initially read it as thyroid and I don't think that's a good thing.

I like Ranald and Magnus (and I like Donald)

Thor might be ok for some parents. I couldn't pull it off myself, but, you know, the right parents might do it without any eyes being rolled behind them.

BUT tbh, Thorold is an eye-roller.

Magnus is nice

A cross between Harold and Thyroid? Sorry, don't man to be rude if either of you really like it, but that was my first thought, along with 'Oooh no!!' Have you got any other boys names picked as a backup?

no way (i suspect I'm with you dh on this??)

I think he might run the risk of having his dinner money nicked - sorry

Nope, it really does read as thyroid. I think the 'hiding under desk' scenario would be a reality.

Is that the best name you/he can come up with? Good God!!!!

I must sympathise a little, though. Our list of potential boys names was woefully short.....

Bloody horrid.

A lifetime of people asking 'How do you spell THAT?!'

Anyway, it's not unique - there was a film director called Thorold Dickenson.

Thorold is also a Canadian city - you may as well call your son Toronto

RedHead81 · 26/08/2008 20:33

hmm, its um... different.
Not a fan I have to admit...
so... which one of you likes it then?? Fess up!!!

SundayRoast · 26/08/2008 20:36

No - though I do like Thor!

ha HA! I hate it and was never planning to allow it anyway but I'm printing this thread out to show DP so he can see EXACTLY how much of a terrible idea it was.

I'm also quite impressed with my own presentation of a balanced view as I thought it would be glaringly obvious I thought it was stupid (no offence any Thorolds out there).

Maybe it depends where you live. What are his friends and classmates likely to be called? If they're all James and Oliver he may get teased. If they include a few Herewards and Ptolemys he may feel more at home!
