Gabriel (sp)- for a boy

I'm only newly pg so it's early days as yet. But dh suggested this to me yesterday. I do like it, but wander if it's a name that would suit a teenage boy. He said we could shorten it to Gabe.

I'm not sure, what are your thoughts?

He'll have a load of people calling him Angel.

I like it though.

Dd has a friend called Gabriel and/or Gabe. I would never have thought of it, but I like it.

I love Gabriel. Friend has 10 year old son called Gabriel and he is very cool, has had no problems with teasing to date.

I love it - seriously considered it when I was pg with dd2. It would have been after Gabriel Oak from "Far from the madding crowd" one of my favourite books.

Did wonder if the 'Gabe' nickname might cause a bit of pisstaking at school, sounding like 'Gay' because kids can soooo unimaginative and cruel.... and because Gay is one of the taunts de jour at the moment amongst secondary age.

I do love it though. Think I might have given it very very serious thought if dd2 had been a boy

One of my favorite names, however I will never be able to use it.

why is that MKG?

So far it seems like it might be a good choice. Thanx for your opinions. I already have 3 dds so i'm not even sure the chances are very good on this one being a boy. There are lots of girls in my family and practically no boys whatsoever.

Oh should have explained. Dh's side of the family is Mexican and would pronounce the name like the girls name Gabrielle not the male version Gabriel. That is why I'll never get to use it. Even though it has come to mind in all three pregnancies.

Right then. speaking from experience. I have a wonderful 9 week old son called Gabriel (obviously I LOVE LOVE LOVE it). Was originally vetoed by DP who said 'everyone'll think he's a girl' to which I said 'nooooooo, nobody's that stupid DP'. After a very difficult labour and delivery I got my way. Now, I have lost count at the number of times our Gabe has been called Gabrielle. Even those who pronounce it Gabe-ree-al still call him 'she'. I blame the Nativity!
Just about everyone I have introduced to him have commented on his fantastic name. Only one instance of the link with Angel - long sad story but our Gabe ended up in SCBU for some time. One of the, shall we say more experienced nurses, commented that she loved the name and hadn't heard it in years when the previous Gabriel she cared for had a little girl neighbour in the unit called Angel. How sweet. We call him Angel. He is our Angel. Hope you use it xxxxx

I love it. Thought of it for DS but wasn't brave enough. Kind of wish I had been though. Go for it.

No. I really really don't like it.

Just ... euuugh ... no.

Not a name I would use

(might be that I have been a secondary school teacher and seen what kids can do with any name out of the ordinary .. or even with the ordinary)

Just ... [visceral feeling] NO

That's our 3rd son's name. He was 'Gaby baby' initially, now he's 3, he's Gabe alot and also Gabriel of course. He answers to all three.

What does annoy us is how so many people put the stress in the wrong place and call him GabriELL, rather than GABE riel.

But we love the name, it's uncommon but not so much that no one has heard of it (for a boy).

I love it and really, really wanted it vetoed by husband who is sure that we are not out of the woods yet with boys thinking that 'GAY' is a huge insult! He took a straw poll amongst his friends and got a resounding DON'T DO IT! (I blame the fact that most of those went to all boys schools)

I would still have used it though :-(

Becoming more popular - I have taught 3 Gabes
