Sante for a boy?

singaporewend · 18/05/2008 04:17

Have four weeks to go and we have struggled with agreeing on a boys name for the last 30. Love the name Sante as a shortened version of Santiago. Thinking about just going for the shortened version as Santiago could be a bit of a mouthful and eyebrow raiser. But is Sante a real name, can't find it in any books?
Opinions welcome....

I think you'll find Sante raises eyebrows as well! Are you Spanish or Latin American? If not, I wouldn't. I really think it's a mistake to use a name that's more likely than not to be mispronounced.

People weren't terribly kind when Posh and Becks called their boy Cruz - I think Sante might be in the same camp!

It's the equivalent of 'cheers' in France so makes me think of clinking glasses.

Is it a real name? IMO ...............no

Santa?

will get a lot of raised eyebrows with that one I reckon. Although I know nothing - see my comment on the "Kendal for a girl" thread for my opinion

I love Santiago, and when it's shortened it also sounds lovely... in Spanish.

Not sure if it would work in English environment... sorry. Too much like Santa, or santé in French as mentioned above.

You would spend the whole of your son's childhood correcting people who can't pronounce it properly.

"You would spend the whole of your son's childhood correcting people who can't pronounce it properly."

And he will spend the rest of his life doing that too. It's bad enough to have a name that stupid and ignorant people get wrong - having a name that EVERYONE will get wrong is a recipe for disaster.

And on a pedantic point - is it actually how Santiago is abbreviated? Wouldn't that be Santo?

Tiago is a boy's name. Really not sure about Santiago - I thought the San bit meant saint?

And obviously it's the capital of Chile. Anyone remember the rumours that Britney Spears was going to call her son London? Even she saw sense.

I love the name.

Here in Spain I think they spell the abbreviation Santi, but don't quote me on that! Definately pronounced like that, unsure of spelling though.

Register him Santiago and call him Santi?

Sorry, but I'm not convinced that Sante is a shortened version of Santiago (and I have very strong links to Spain), the shortened version is Santi (Santee).

If you are going to use a foreign name at least use the full version of it, that gives your child the option to choose what abreviation or not he wasnt to use when he gets older.

Sante sounds to me like the very French "cheers"

I love Sante.

Yeah he might get Santa, but as I always say on name threads, even if you called him John or Paul, they'd still get someone picking at their name.
Thats what kids do.

Go for it if you like it.

'Santi' is how the Spanish shorten Santiago, afaik. 'Sante' has an 'e' sound like in 'egg' but 'i' sounds like the i in 'ink'.

I could not go with Santi because I saw a wonderful spanish movie called the Devil's Back Bone. Santi was the murdered boy whose ghost sought and found revenge on his killer.

A highly recommended movie though. I show it to 15 and 16 yr olds ever so often and they are spell bound by it.

or you can just call him James as in Saint James. That is the English version of Santiago (Sant Iago).

But if you're call them John or Paul you're not actually setting them up for people singing about being stuck up chimneys every time they enter a room!

I still think Slainte's lovely.

I love Santiago (and Salvador).

If you are worried that people will think it's strange, go to your Mum's house for two weeks and then when you get back put on false tan and say you were in El Salvador and Santiago de Compostela. SO long as you don't try to tell us where el chiquitito was conceived nobody will judge you too harshly.

It's a proper name. It's not a type of Car and it's not an American president or a roller barbie. sheer class imo.
