I know I'm having a boy and I think my top name is:

I'm trying to keep everyone happy - DH wants something none religious. parents would prefer something REALLY relgious and preferably Irish

I like the 'older' names - Harry, Jack, Alfie, Freddie but as I have a very 'common' name I'd like something which isn't 'the most popular name' 2008...

What does everyone think?

All the names you mentioned are really popular, but if you like them you need to decide what's most important to you, loving the name, or the need to have something a bit different.

I like the names. I think Harry and Jack are a bit more classic and Alfie and Freddie a bit trendier though.

I'd like to give my son a name which can be shortened...

So... He'd be Christened henry, alfred, Frederick or Jonathan, Charles or whatever and then I'd shorten it.......

Callum is lovely...and it is shortened to cal sometimes....( i love the way kate winslet says it on titanic)....

..you can so tell i have a cal (callum) amongst my brood...lol

I love Callum! It was on my list but sounds a bit too like DH's name.

Think it's quite popular up here just now (in Scotland) - just checked, number 5 for 2007 - so it depends where you are.

IMO it's not chavvy at all.

I love the name Callum.. We were only put off ot because of the wee bugger boy next door! lol.

Being honest, no don't think Callum is chavvy, but it is very common - round here at least. In ds' preschool (intake of about 30-40) there were 4 of them. I quite liked it, but am a bit bored of it now.
Agree with TMMJ - I personally prefer Jack & Harry/Henry as less 'of their time' than Alfie & Freddie (although i have a 26 yo brother Frederik - shortened to Riki - so do have a soft spot there!)

I don't think Callum is inherently chavvy (like Armani and Tyson, for example) but where I live there are a lot of tracksuity families with little Callums. However, the Callum I know best is the PFB of a professor of chemistry and not at all chavvy.

If you're bothered about having the same name as everyone else -(I know some people are -can't see the problem myself)-practically every one of my ds's friends seems to be called either Callum or Connor. A slight exaggeration - but there are 3 Callums in his class of 28, and 4 in his year group at football club.

Thanks! I'm surprised how many Callums there are - I don't know any, but know LOADS of Jacks and Harrys.

I really like the name Rory but, for reasons I won't go into here, I can't use it.

I'd like something that's a bit Irish, but not overtly so (No Donals, Feargals, Colms or Eions!)

Any suggestions?

I think Callum is a lovely boys name and will be on my list next time. I think it is quite common but don't think that's a particularly bad thing for a boy.

It helps that dd's best friend is a Callum and he is a little cracker.

Callum is a lovely name, and as mum to a Rory, I have to say it's a lovely name too, (whether or not you can roll your Rs imo, although if like Jonathan Ross, your R' become Ws, then I'd avoid it). Am curious why you can't use it, but fair enough not to say here. Callum is a lovely name though, really lovely and not 'chavvy' at all.
