Ok so my sister is supposed to be naming her daughter EE-la, not eye-la, and is getting very angsty with me for being utterly confused about how to spell it.

So, my question is how would you spell a name pronounced ee-la?

I'll let you know how she's spelling it after.

Isla (although I'd normally pronounce that eye-la).

Ila.

I'm guessing it's going to be Isla, though I would usually pronounce that Eye-la.

To get an Ee-la pronunciation I can only imagine Eela, Elah, Ela, Ilah??

My great aunt Ee-la was spelt Elia. But that's the West Country for you.

Purple Blush

I get so irritated with people who don't read the OP properly and then make a totally boneheaded reply right under it.

Sorry OP Blush

Isla.

I'd pronounce it Eye-la the first time I saw it written down, but Ee-la after that. It's no more confusing than Caitlin or Francesca or Claudia which can also be pronounced in various ways.

Is we-la even a valid pronounciation? Isla is a tradional name with a well known pronounciation
I'' not aware of an EE-la variant?

Eala.

I'm now intrigued as to what other pronunciation there is of Caitlin and Francesca...

I'd pronounce it 'eel-a' and Isla 'eye-la'

Spam88 - bit ironic but said sister's name is Francesca pr Fran-ches-ca, but often at the dentist and suchlike it is pronounced fran-sess-ca or Fran-kes-ca... not that I've ever heard of them being "proper" pronunciations.

As for Caitlin, it's either Kate-lynn or Kat-lynn with Kat-lynn being the traditional one.
