My daughter is 13 weeks old and we called her Esme Rose pn ( Es-ME)
However some people say Esmay and it drives me mad. Is it too late to change her name?
Xx

I don't think you can change the name on her birth certificate but you could call her by her middle name. Google to see if you can change it.

You can legally change it very easily up to 1 yr. would you go for Rose instead? I think both names are lovely but understand it's annoying when someone mispronounces a lovely name.

I think you can change in the first year?

I thought Es-may was the right way, that's the way I'd say it.

If if really bugs you then I'd change it now before she gets to know her own name.

I'd say it Es-may too. I suspect that's how everyone will pronounce it. Change it now if that will annoy you.

I think you can change it up to a year old. Don't know how though.

Can't you just politely correct them? That's what I used to do when people shortened my DCs names when they were babies.

I thought you'd named your baby Regret. I came on to read the comments Blush.

I would say Es- may, sorry. My neighbour has the same spelling and that's with the May pronunciation too.

You can change it but people change names/ give nicknames so be prepared for it to happen again.

Congratulations though Flowers

Esme IS pronounced Es-may...

How about Emme, which is pronounced Em-mee?

Report
ZoeH123 · 21/11/2016 22:51

I know and Es may and an Es me

I think Es me is the most accepted pronunciation in SE as the Es may has to always correct it

FannyUmbongo · 21/11/2016 22:55

It is pronounced Es May isn't it?

Ledehe · 21/11/2016 22:55

What is you changed the spelling to Esmee? I would pronounce Esme as Esmay but with the double e you can probably get people to pronounce it the way you like when they see it written. And if you tell them verbally they shouldn't say it another way

I thought it was pronounced Es-may OP.

LuluNTutu · 21/11/2016 22:58

I thought es me (from south) dh thought es may (from north) so it might be geographical?

Also thought baby was called regret and came on to read the comments.....disappointed Grin

We have the same issue with our dd no matter how often I correct people they pronounce it wrong! But I knew it could be pronounced either way when I chose it and chose the non anglicised pronounciation

I would pronounce it Esmee not Esmay, pretty sure the Esmay is an American pronunciation not the right one. Esmee doesn't look right either. Just tell people how it's pronounced.

Report
hollieberrie · 21/11/2016 23:06

Why have you put a capital letter for regret? I thought that was the baby's name!
If you don't like it then def change it. Life's too short to be unhappy.

My niece is called Esme too, and we all pronounce it Ez-mee. When she was born about 8 years ago it was the first time I'd heard of the name and everyone pronounced it that way, so I assumed it was the normal way. Without any accent it is the logical pronunciation too.

We're in SE.
