Underused English boys names..

Expecting DS1 in the next few weeks. Would like to use an underused but classic name. DH no help - he removes names from the shortlist faster than I can add them!

I want some nice middle ground between the popular classics (William/Thomas/George) and the mumsnet 'classics' (Jolyon/Tarquin/Crispin).

I think of names like Paul, Simon, John, Tom, Peter, Michael. They are condemned now as dull and 1970s. I think the are classics.

In my child's (large) primary school there is no child called David. I love Dave/Davey as nn and also David as a sturdy name.

I checked the ONS and David is not an underused name. It must be regional (and I expect class) related. It is a very underused traditional name near me.

And I agree with the PP who suggested Aubrey is ripe for confusion with Audrey, I think it's also a popular girls name in the states which is a shame.

Oh and for completeness im also loving slightly fuddy duddy names like Basil, Herbert and Humphrey but DH won't hear any of it!
So any suggestion for this type of name but slightly more 'normal' would be much appreciated!!
