Hello,

My DH is Lucas. We are expecting our son in January. He will be Lucas Junior. How is Junior put into the name. I assume it's a middle name? Or is it part of the 1st name? Thanks.

Don't do it. Way to American.

Sophronia · 04/11/2016 22:41

I don't think it's usually put into the actual name on the birth certificate, you'd just have Lucas as the first name and could then refer to him as Lucas Junior if you wanted to

Erm, surely he's just named Lucas but you call him Lucas Junior?

Report
iisme · 04/11/2016 22:41

Definitely v American. But if you do do it, you don't put it into the actual name. It's just a sort of nickname to differentiate the two people of the same name.

You could have Lucas XXXX II

Kidding. ^^what they said.

Its a suffix, eg Lucas Smith Jr.

PatriciaHolm · 04/11/2016 22:43

Americans would put it at the end - Fred Smith Jr.

But why not give him a name of his own?

Oh okay! Well DH would like it and as we hope for more children I don't mind letting him have first pick!!

If you and your DH want to do it, thats your choice. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Suffix_(name) - scroll down to 'generational titles'

And congratulations!

I work with a Swiss guy who's a (HisDad'sName) Junior so it's not just an American thing. I think it's quite sweet actually. We just call him Junior. I don't know if it's just him but it does make him the perennial sort of "little brother" of the team.

I have taught many juniors ... Tony Junior (TJ), John Junior (JJ), an AJ, a CJ and a PJ. All had Junior as a middle name. Have also taught a couple of Juniors.
It could be Lucas Junior

Lucas Lastname Jr

Report
meditrina · 04/11/2016 23:27

Sorry to be a bit morbid, but Junior isn't part of the given name. It's a suffix used only when there are two or more of the same name alive at the same time.

So it's Lucas Smith, Lucas Smith Junior and Lucas Smith 3rd, until the grandfather dies, at which point everyone else budges up one.

Just call him Lucas 2.0

Report
Applesauce29 · 04/11/2016 23:32

Too American IMO. Why not Lucas (different middle name), and call him Junior as a nickname if you must.

Report
Pluto30 · 04/11/2016 23:38

It's not actually part of the name, just something that gets tacked on later. My dad was a "Junior".

ps. It's tacky

He hated it. His father was an asshole, and he was forced to share a complete name with him. He ended up going by something completely different (think being named Daniel but going by James).

In Ireland we tack Óg (owe - hard g) onto the name of a boy named after someone else like that, so he'd be Lucas Óg here ;)

Report
TyrionLannistersShadow · 04/11/2016 23:50

Forgot to say Óg means young ! So Lucas Óg would be Young Lucas Smile

Yeah it's not formally part of the name (doesn't appear on the BC). It's just a nickname.

Being American isn't a bad thing per se. But it is significantly culturally different from being British that some idiosyncratically American things just don't quite work here in the U.K. That is what I assume people mean when they say far too American....

Junior can be a middle name

If you have Ds2 will he also be Lucas? Or does he get a random name? Would dd be named after you to complete your mini me set?

Give the child his own identity and dh's name as mn if he's so desperate to use it.

Report
RortyCrankle · 05/11/2016 15:08

Give the poor child his own name.

Report
SoupDragon · 05/11/2016 15:12

Give him a middle name that is his alone so he can use that in later life if he wishes.
