Girls name also my gaming avatar

So, this is a weird one.

OH and I are self confessed computer game geeks. We have played all kinds of games together over the years, some even with his immediate family. The name I always used as my avatar/character was a name I've always loved. It's popular in Italy, Slovenia and France but is quite rare in the Uk. It also shares the name of a character from one of my favourite tv shows.

Now we've been mulling round girls names for months now but I feel more and more that if I have a girl, I'd want to give it this name. OH loves it but I'm conscious that his family might think I'm naming my baby after my gaming character when in fact I've always just loved the name.

Any thought? Bad idea or am I over thinking this?

I think that would be perfectly fine. Anyone who asks can be told what you have posted above. Having said that, I'd wait until after the birth to announce the name, curtailing such discussions!

I think this is fine. I'm not a gamer but for years have used a certain name in a different but similar way (in fact here is the only place I don't use it) I wouldn't use it for my child because it's a bit too out there even for me, but I understand how you can connect to a name in that way and have a strong feeling for it.

Unless it's a really out there name that she won't thank you for, I'd go ahead

I love the name. The name Roma is lovely too for a girl.

It is lovely. The only downside I can see is people glancing at it quickly and reading Ramona, which is possibly more common?

Does it matter that they might think that?

If they comment, laugh and say that you chose the name for you gaming character because you loved the name.

Would you need to change the name of your character though - might it feel a bit odd playing with a character with the same name as your DD?

Sierra - possibly, but Ive put up with people misspelling my name my entire life so this kind of thing doesn't bother me. And people always complement me on how unique and beautiful my name is so its worth the hassle.

Soup - absolutely, in fact we don't play games with his family anymore and I've already started to use a different alias on new games.

Thanks everyone!

How about Romala as a slight variant?

I know a few people who have done things like this - like giving their first born the name of a previous pet, for example. I think if you love a name from a young age when you won't be having kids it makes sense to use that name for something else. It doesn't exclude it from being a kids name in the future though!

If anyone says about you naming her after your gaming character you can just say it's a name you've always loved. Maybe joke that it's the start of your attempts to get her into gaming if you are happy to joke about it.

Love Romana, gorgeous.
Go for it, I don't think the gaming thing matters at all x
