George or Gregory?

Love George but it's definitely got a lot more popular recently and am not so keen on the royal connection. Other contender is Gregory, nn Greg which I wasn't sure about at first but have become pretty fond of. Hardly seems to be used with children at the moment, is there a reason for this that I'm overlooking?!

I like both.

George is more popular. I think Gregory "had its moment" but is ready for a comeback now. It always makes me think of Gregory Peck, which is an awesome association.

I love Gregory.

George is ok, no strong feelings on it either way.

Heh, my DP is George and my DB is Gregor. So obviously I like both.

Encouraging, thanks ladies. Feeling more confident about the less popular G option already! Smile

I think Gregory is just a bit dated. It reminds me of some posh sap from the 80s or 90s.

I'm not a fan of George either though, so feel free to ignore me.

I have an 8 month old Gregory. I also love George but couldn't use it.

Now he's here he's definately Greg. We have had comments but don't care.

His sister also has a retro name. I love the fact that their names are in the same genre as ours.

Both have very short more modern middle names though.

I would like to add I think Gregory has a nicer meaning than George. I have no idea why its not more popular. We got it from watching House while I was pg! and it fit my name criteria.

Much prefer George.

mrsnec what kind of comments have you had about the name? We were also thinking that going with a short, one-syllable modern middle name would help it sound less old fashioned. Tempted by Jack or James (although is it weird because of the Radio 1 DJ Greg James?)

Love Gregory. Not mad on George at all, it's over used.

Yes I was going to say, Gregory reminds me of House. So I wouldn't personally use it.

George I've always liked.

Have never watched House so don't make that association. Is it not a good thing? Not too bothered by that tbh given it means nothing to me!

I like Gregory it's a lovely, solid name that is well known but you don't come across whereas although I like George they are ten a penny at the moment.

I don't think I like Greg on a baby, much prefer Gregory but I think Greg is a lovely nn for an older child / young man :)

Greedysquirrels · 28/10/2016 10:24

Thanks 17caterpillars I completely agree - can't imagine calling a small baby 'Greg' so I guess he would be Gregory initially but I definitely like Greg on an older boy/man. Have to remind myself that it's not dissimilar to Fred and that's become pretty popular lately, not considered weird.
