My DD is 7 weeks old and and we have called Evelyn (pronounced Eev-lyn) with Evie as a nn. However, it seems that everywhere we go people have pronounce her name Ever-lyn and it's left me wondering which is the correct pronunciation. How would you pronouce Evelyn? Should I use the Ever-lyn pronunciation to avoid confusion as she grows up?

My auntie is Ever-lyn, known as Evvy. I have met Eev-lyns, though.

I think that most people looking at name Evelyn would assume it is pronounced Ever-Lyn. This is what I thought looking at your thread title, but then I did quickly think "or maybe it's pronounced Eve-Lyn" which is becoming more common. I think it's a lovely name and you shouldn't change how you pronounce it although I think you/she will often be correcting people initially.

I have an Evelyn, pronounced Ever-lin and that is what most people seem to assume too. I have only had one person say Eev-lin. I thought that was more the male version, as in Evelyn Waugh. Both sound nice though.

I pronounce it Ev-lyn. Have never heard it said as Ever-Lyn in though have heard it pronounced Eve-Lyn. Maybe it's a regional thing (am in Ireland)

I would pronounce it Eve-lyn. Lovely name!

We have an Evelyn, we say Ever-Lyn and Eevee for short.
I have heard it pronounced differently though, I even heard it said more like Evil-Lyn, like the He-Man character.

I thought Eve-Lin was the male and Ever-lin the female? Not sure. It's a lovely name though.

I would pronounce it Eve-Lyn, because it was my granny's name and that is how she pronounced it.

My friend has a 10 year old Evelyn and I still have no idea how to bloody pronounce it, it's a beautiful name.

It's a bit like people called Mia, I never know whether it's supposed to be "Meeya" or "Mya" Hmm

There are three ways to pronounce it, all are correct:

Eve-lyn (as in Adam and Eve, like Evelyn Waugh, also fine for a girl)
Ever-lyn (as in happily ever after)
Ev-lyn (with a short hard ev sound)

I would pronounce it Eva-lin, without a doubt. Never even knew anyone pronounced it Eve-lin.

I'd say it as Eev-lyn but then my DD is called Evie pronounced Ee-vee

I only know Evv-lins. I understood it was Evv- for girls and Eve- for boys, and my experience so far complies with that.

Evv for girls and eev for boys, in my experience

I have an Evelyn. We say Ever-Lyn but mostly she's just Effie.

Ever-lyn for me.

Eve-lyn sounds clunky and wrong.

I had three aunties called Evelyn (Eev-lin), one was called Ev-lin by a friend which I thought was odd as you pronounce the contracted form as Eve not Ev but I have never ever heard of Ever-lin. So if they called themselves Eve for short it would be pronounced Ever? Bizarre.

We prounounce our DD's name as Eve-lyn. She's named after my MIL, who was always Eve-lyn. Her nn is Eve or Evie (not too common for us UnicornPee) so it works.

I prefer Ever-Lin.

I read recently that Ever-Lin was the female pronunciation and Eve-Lin the male, no idea how true that is.

However, I would never pronounce it Ev-Lin.

Evelyn Glennie the percussionist is very clear that her version is pronounced Ev- Lin
(I remember her saying that years ago on an interview because she obviously lip reads and knew the interviewer was pronouncing it differently!)

But she's Scottish and that's how we mostly pronounce it up here!

I loved this name when I was pregnant but didn't use it for this precise reason.
I also thought of Eveliene but again wasn't sure of the correct pronunciation.
I wanted it to be pronounce ever-line but my dd is a teenager now and we went with something less ambivalent!
