Ideas for boy - I like Roscoe and Finley

Hermano · 20/10/2016 10:01

Ideas wanted for a boy please.
I want something unusual but not completely freakish.

I really love Roscoe but not sure I'd actually go with it, plus I need options as OH might veto that anyway.

Also love Finley but it's too popular for me to actually choose.

Other names I don't hate are:
Tristan
James
Cosmo
Giles

I'm not sure I love any of those 4 enough to choose them though, possibly Tristan...

Name must not start with an A, E, K.

Thanks for any ideas

Agree that Finley is a great name but far far too popular nowadays. What about Flynn instead?

Whilst I'm not overly keen on Roscoe - I prefer it to Tristain, Giles and Cosmo. Hate all of those, sorry! James is a very classic and traditional boring name IMO and doesn't seem to really fit with the rest of your choices.

I also had the name Torin on my list but DP vetoed it. Still love it though

I love Gryff too

Thanks Potato. I agree James is out of keeping but I love it so added it in for context!

I do like Flynn but it reeks of breaking bad to me. Does it have that connotation to everyone else? Gryff is also quite nice...is it shirt for something? I don't like names which get shortened. Ideally I want a name which stands as it is unchanged (fine with 'stupid' shortening which LO's friends will inevitably make up).

For some reason I quite like Ross as a shortened Roscoe though! It's all confusing and contradictory.

Torin I like but it feels a tiny bit try hard GoT / LOTR for me. I clearly am try hard but I don't want to look it IYSWIM Confused

I will now sit back and wait for a flaming about how all my names (except James!) are try hard.

Roscoe reminds me of the Dukes of Hazard. Flynn of Breaking Bad but prefer Flynn.

I like James best of your choices.

Niall?

If you want 'different', don't go for Finley, I know loads.

I've seen it pop up on MN a few times and it's really grown on me despite me originally dismissing it as a cat's name - Felix. Really like it now.

Gryff can be short for Griffin which means 'strong' but I prefer just Gryff tbh

You won't come away from here any wiser. Mumsnet folk think popular Is common and unusual is bizzare!

Pick a name you like and try not to tell people till afterwards, you won't hear people's opinions then.

I like Tristan. Along the same lines what about Thorsten?

We were going to go for Tristan but decided on Finley. No regrets here, don't mind is popular i haven't actually met that many, plus it's not that high on the tables and he really suits it. Also fin is a nice shortening.
Some people can't say Tristan properly which put me off and I'm not so keen on the inevitable tris

What's more difficult is the middle range names (like Finley)

Lots of really popular names (top 20 names) such as James, Harry and William, get great feedback. But names like Finley, which has been top 50 since 2007 but has never been higher than 36, are deemed "too popular".

I'm really pleased with the love for Roscoe! I like that it can be a girls name to. We don't know baby's sex but I find girls names a lot easier.

Most of the ones I like which have been mentioned are names of people we know, and mostly people I wouldn't want to name my kid after. Or TV people that I also wouldn't want to reference - quite like Tobias but big Arrested Development fan and I can't have that association!

Thanks very much for all suggestions. I'll show this thread to DP and see if he is keen on any. Maybe baby will be a girl and it'll all be nice and easy...

Please keep suggestions coming if anyone has more ideas
