Boy names for our Swiss-American baby who'll be born (and hopefully/most likely) grow up in Scotland. Do you like these? Would they work in Scotland?

Alexander
Nathanael
David
Jason

Middle names:
Chevy
Carter
Davis
Jason
Eric

Alexander and Nathaniel are fabulous.

David is ok.

Jason not so much.

Carter is a nice middle name.

Xander?

The middle names are all a bit ... un-British but middle names are supposed allowed to be unusual/dated/awful, particularly if they're significant. Don't combine David with Davis though Grin

Jason sounds really dated to me so it's my least favourite by a long way.

I think Nathaniel is a more usual spelling. Alexander and David are popular names in Scotland.

Anything but Jason!

I'd avoid Jason and Chevy. Others all fine.

Nathanael will mostly be spelled Nathaniel so I'd go with that spelling to avoid a life of correcting it.

The thing is, the German version is Nathanael, and Nathaniel sounds incredibly wrong to my Swiss-German ears... like, Georz or maybe Alefander would to an English speaker. And seeing as Nathanael is a version that's acceptable in English. Hm...Hmm

Well, my wife is Southern, and the middle names (except for Eric) are names she suggested. Jason is the first name of her brother and the middle name of her granddaddy, so... yes. Fairly significant. Chevy is simply in honour of her first car, seeing as she does work with vintage cars. Well. I'd never call our son Clausula, Kausalität or Pacta Sunt Servanda, but I'm not as passionate about my work as she is, so there's that Grin

And thank you so much for the suggestion. But I really don't like Xander. And my wife luckily just told me she doesn't either.Wink

I don't like Nathaniel at all , and Jason not much , the other 2 ( David and Alexander ) are lovely
All the middle names are awful
What's wrong with Alexander David
Or
David Alexander
But
It's not my baby ...

There's nothing wrong with David Alexander. I just don't really like it Blush

Well, I personally think Jason would be an awesome middle name. And I do like Jason better than Chevy....

I like Nathanael, and I think the spelling is fine, I know one spelt that way and although it's not the more common spelling I don't think it causes too much trouble.

I really like the middle name being after a brother, Nathanael Jason is a good name, I'd go for that.

I really like Alexander. I'm not keen on Jason as a first name but as it has significance to your family I think it would be nice as a middle name, so Alexander Jason would be my vote.

I know I'm alone on this, but I really like the name Jason. But I don't think it goes with any of your middle names.

I like Alexander and Nathanael (although I too prefer the English spelling, but that's probably just because it's what I'm used to, same reason you prefer your spelling).

Jason feels very 80s to me and David is kind of dull and uninteresting.

I would go with Alexander Jason.

They sit together well (Greek origins the pair) and are known across Europe. Alexander is in frequent use in Scotland but has loads of nickname potential so it's not as samey as it could have been.

I also like the name Jason :)

In my opinion it would be the perfect middle name.

Alexander Jason or Nathanael Jason sound lovely imo.

Carter is very president-ish imo. I'm not sure why, but A Carter or N Carter sounds a bit stiff/formal to me....

Why Chevy. Chase or cars?
(I'm just thinking my teens are now old enough to watch Caddyshack, hurrah!)

WeArePregnant11 · 06/10/2016 21:09

Cars. My wife's first car. And she works with cars...

Not what I'd chose. But although I do have a middle name I'd like to use if we have a girl (to honour my granny) I'm fine with any of these middle names, tbh. Even Chevy :D

Cool :). I vote Alexander Chevy, then.

Report
WeArePregnant11 · 06/10/2016 21:29

Chevy would be my 2nd favourite middle name, right after Jason. But unless my wife changes her opinion Chevy will most likely be it.

I really like Nathaniel (if I were to use Nate the ae or ie wouldn't matter...).

And Alexander is super great imo.

When is the baby due?

Report
WeArePregnant11 · 06/10/2016 21:42

at the beginning of June :)

We won't tell family yet because it's just way too early, but it's just too much excitement to contain (so, mumsnet). And although I wanted to be a mother since I was around 20 I didn't think I'd actually ever... So, yeah. I'm alternating between crying and grinning like a loon (i don't even want to know what people at the office thought).

Alexander Jason is lovely and will work well in Scotland, as does David but David Jason is probably not a great idea unless your wife's favourite car is a 3 wheeled yellow van.

I also like Eric, Eric Jason would work well too.

or just Nathan instead of worrying about the spelling of Nathanial? I don't think Nathan jason works but Nathan Alexander is nice.

I think all of your names will work well in Scotland, so it's really just a matter of your preference. I think Jason is lovely, and there were 43 of them born in Scotland last year. So not that unpopular a choice!
