Murphy for a girls name?
We really like it would like to know what other people think

LunaLoveg00d Wed 21-Sep-16 16:45:22

NO! It's a surname, not a given name and definitely not a name for a child.

I know at least two dogs called Murphy though.

Giratina Wed 21-Sep-16 16:46:40

Wouldn't be great for a boy, absolutely awful for a girl.

AmeliaJack Wed 21-Sep-16 16:49:29

I know two Murphys- both boys. The nick name is "Murf" in both cases.

I don't think I'd have liked to be a Murf personally. So no, I wouldn't use it for a girl.

Sorry, I also know a dog named Murphy..

shumway Wed 21-Sep-16 16:49:57

I like it.

Awful

Nope. It's a surname.

Tiggeryoubastard Wed 21-Sep-16 16:52:01

I know a cat called Murphy but really it's the name of a dead 'ard dig with scars and missing teeth. Don't really believe anyone would call a girl that.

I was thinking it was quite cute until you said 'for a girl'

goingfortwo Wed 21-Sep-16 16:59:19

we also like Hector for a boy

chinlo Wed 21-Sep-16 16:59:21

My best friend had a dog called Murphy.

chinlo Wed 21-Sep-16 17:00:26

(a male dog)

I've got a dog called Murphy

LunaLoveg00d Wed 21-Sep-16 17:04:13

Hector is a lot better than Murphy - assuming you are talking about a boy!

Vixxfacee Wed 21-Sep-16 17:05:30

There's a film with a girl called Murphy in it. The one where the dad goes to space and at the end he's behind the book shelves or something.
No it's not a good name.

Loyly Wed 21-Sep-16 17:06:22

Murphy for a girl is just awful, OP. I don't like it, sorry. But Hector for a boy is excellent.

Iliveinalighthousewiththeghost Wed 21-Sep-16 17:09:57

I met an adorable little pup named Murphy once. It's not a name for a human though and certainly not a little girl. IMHO

Interstellar. What a great film. (p.s. spoiler alert!)

Americans sure do love giving girls surname names.

DoYouRememberJustinBobby Wed 21-Sep-16 17:11:19

Terrible. Just terrible. It's a surname or a drink.

therootoftheroot Wed 21-Sep-16 17:14:06

oh god these poor children sad

i feel desperately sorry for so many of the poor babies i read about on here wit these awful, desperately awful nmaes.
who looks a beautiful newborn baby girl and thinks 'let's call her murphy?'

or at a cute little boy and think 'hector is just right'

there are thousands of beautiful names to choose from >why is there a fashion for ugly ones?

Because beauty is subjective.

I feel desperately sorry for you.

EasternDailyStress Wed 21-Sep-16 17:18:01

I came on to say it's a dog's name. My opinion is that it's horrible for any human. But then I don't like surnames as first names generally.

DixieWishbone Wed 21-Sep-16 17:21:00

I don't care for the sound of it. I am quite used to the whole surname as first name thing too. It will be shortened to 'Murph' and possibly Smurf.

If it is a family name, or you really love it as a name, you could always use it as a middle name, then your DD can switch to it if she also loves the name.
