Is Douglas a strong name?

DC3 on the way and we've recently stumbled across the name Douglas, to be known as Dougie I would expect. DH having a wobble that it isn't a 'strong/solid' sort of name. I think it ticks that box just fine and am pretty sold on it. Any thoughts?

It's my absolute favourite boys name.

DamsonGin that's excellent to know! Any special reason/association? We're not Scottish btw.

It's a very strong, classic name. Scottish originally.

Only possible negative is the classic joke: what do you call a man with a spade in his head?
....and what do you call him when the spade's removed?

Wouldn't stop me using the name if I had a son.

Yes, it is. I know a primary aged Duncan as well which has really grown on me.

That's all really helpful, thanks. Does it sound ridiculous with Thomas as a middle name, because both end in 'as'? Would like to use it as strong family connections.

I don't have any strong feelings on the name either way. It's a classic, standard name. Doug is an okay nickname too. Dougie, however, sounds horrible!

Only my opinion of course!

to be known as Dougie

Will you pronounce that "Doogie" or "Duggie"?

But yes, it's a good solid Scottish name, from the Gaelic meaning "dark stream', and historically the Douglases were often allies (or enemies!) of the Scottish Crown, so I'd say it's definitely a strong name.

Horatio would pronounce it 'Duggie'.

Love it. Love it so much :) do it. Fantastic name, I know a teenage, mid-thirties and almost 90 year old Douglas, and they are all fantastic. The name works across all ages :)

Randomly I was just saying what a lovely name it is apropos chattering about someone I vaguely know called Dougie.

It doesn't sound particularly strong to me TBH.

My Dad's name and my Son's middle name! It's my Gran's Maiden name. Google 'the black Douglas'-pretty strong (and scary!) I'd say Wink

I love it, it's up there as a choice for our DC due in March.

(It is also my brother's name. We are Scottish and he is known as 'Duggie'. I really don't like the 'Doogie' pronunciation.)

It's s nice name but not a strong one IMO

So it seems opinions are split on how strong a name it is, but I'm taking comfort from the fact that nobody (who has posted at least!) says they hate it!

I like Douglas. I'm not really sure what a 'strong name' even really means but I think Douglas has a nice soft sound.
I prefer Doug as a short version though because when I hear Duggie I imagine Bruno Mars singing he lazy song
'Watching MTV so they can teach me how to Dougie'

I have no idea what it means though, off to google...

It's a hip hop dance move! I am so not cool or down with the kids

I've seen it mentioned on this board a few times recently. I think it is going to have a bit of a revival.
