Finley... For a girl?

There was one on home and away about 25 years ago Grin dh likes it, is it just silly? For a girl that is, it's popular round here for boys.

I think Finlay for a boy, Finty for a girl is more usual?

It's going to be irritating for your DD if people are constantly confused by her name and assuming she's a boy before they meet her.

Sue for a boy?

I remember that character on H&A Grin

If you love it, do it. My ds has a name which people assume is a girls name (i did not know this when i chose it, but its unusual and there are several girls names that sound very similar). It doesnt bother him or us.

I'm not a huge fan, but on the subject of boys names for girls, my DD is always shortened to Percy (from Persephone) and no one ever passes comment. No idea whether she objects, she is only two!

I seem to like male names for girls. A mner has a dd named Dylan which I love (though not brave enough to use).

What other slightly unisex names might I like?

I think it is more of an American thing though.

I would assume Finley to be a boy.
The names Ashley and Avery get people guessing*. Then there are sound-alikes, eg Sasha for a girl, Sacha for a boy.

*Just remembered Lindsay too.

I think it's nice actually. Smile

I always associate the name Finley as a girls name. I think it's because the first Finley I knew was Finley off H&A

I know a girl Finley. After an initial 'hmm, interesting' moment it's just her name and very lovely (as is she).

If you like it, go for it!

ShowOfHands · 19/07/2016 17:39

eg Sasha for a girl, Sacha for a boy

Both boys names. The spelling is geographical. Sacha is the French spelling, Sasha is Russian I think. See also Sachsa or other variants. People do use it for girls now but the spelling means nothing. Interestingly, in Germany you aren't allowed to use it for girls.

I like the name but I'm always a little confused on the spelling (Finley, Finlay, Findley, Findlay). Might just be me (always got my sounds and letters a bit mixed up) but I've always tried to use names that don't come with the question 'which way is it spelt'.
