Travelled up to London for Goddaughter's birthday party today, she's 3 and the party was filled with kids with such daring names.

I met a Merlin, Kaiser, Wulfric, Colt, Sailor (Girl) Dallas (Girl) Ophelia, Illythia and many more.

All 5 & under, I didn't realise daring names had now become the trend, is it just a London thing ?

I have a Wendy & a Kane & I thought those names were daring Blush

Merlin is relatively common among old Welsh blokes. I know a couple of Merlins. I think of it as a nice old bloke name to be honest, like Stan or Alf.

Ah ok, tinkly

I am ignorant of Welsh ways. I thought it was just a wizard name.

Maisie, Merlin was such a lovely little lad, the look on my face when I heard his name makes me feel slightly bad, no idea if they were Welsh or not.

MrsRay, oh yeah, his Mom thinks it sounded a lot like Kane, so we got to talking quite a bit Grin

Gowgirl, I feel exactly the same way, even though my kids are too old for toddler groups. I know far too many Tommys, Oliver's & Williams.

ShowofHands Shock I did not meet an Elfin, I wish I had though.

Not just a London thing. I know two Merlins, and quite a lot of similarly unusually-named children.

Merlin, Kaiser and Wulfruc sound like dogs to me. Specifically, sled dogs with pale blue eyes that look like they might turn on you if stranded in the wilderness and a bit peckish.

Nothing unusual about Dallas - it's been a unisex name in Scotland for hundreds of years. Colt, Sailor and Kaiser are the only ones that would raise an eyebrow as at least the others are real names.

I wouldn't even look twice at someone named Ophelia or Dallas. They don't seem too "out there" to me. Merlin is cool, but I wouldn't be brave enough to use it.

The others are just... no. Especially Kaiser. Great name for a German Shepherd, but awful for a child.

I love Sailor for a girl too! I'm surprised Dallas is so common amongst MN-ers. I've never heard of one and I probably would raise an eye brow. Shows what I know.. That said, our toddler group is equally unusual with Cameron, Tatiana, Fife, Renzo, Airlie, Weston, Odin, Uma and Romy. Agreed it may be a London thing.

Kaiser is an absolutely terrible name, and Wulfric is calculated to make a child a laughing stock.

Report
honeysucklejasmine · 19/07/2016 07:05

Wulfric is one of Dumbledore's middle names.
