I love this name. I know it's in the top ten, but I don't meet many. There's one in my eldest daughter's school but it's hyphenated with something else.

How many do you meet?

A bajillion of them. I know of Lily, Lili, Lilee variations. I can think of six I know personally and from talking to teacher friends they know a lot too.

I think of it as a popular name but I only know one age 10.

Lovely very pretty who cares about where it is in the popularity rankings.

One of my DDs has a popular name already so I'm not against popular names or anything. But I loved that name and never doubted it for a second, so I am able to shrug it off that there are three in her year at school (two form entry). I think Lily is really, really pretty, but weighing up whether I love it enough that it wouldn't bug me.

My DH loves this name. I like it, but think it's too popular in our area to use. We were at a wedding last summer and there were 6 little girls there (I'd say all aged under 8). 2 of these girls were called Lily, and 1 was Lily-Rose.

If you like it, use it, but I think the popularity would drive me nuts.

I know one Lilli (for Lillian). I think it's a really pretty name though. One of mine has a top ten popular name and we don't meet that many other children with it, there are two in her class including her.

My first though was that I think it's become such a stereotypically popular name that actually there aren't all that many any more. But then it is still top ten so that can't be true across the country.

I recently worked on a dance show which included nearly 150 children, largely under 10 years old and almost all girls. Only one Lillie. At school I've taught lots of Lilys and a Lili but the youngest of those is now 11. No a single one in the school of 350ish at the moment.

They're everywhere. It's like no one can see any further than the name Lily for a girl, like Reuben, Noah, Oscar and Oliver for boys, and if I hear another Lily-Mae yelled out in the park. I'll scream, but all that said though. It's your baby. Your choice

We've got at least 3 at our 200-pupil primary, plus another one at Brownies who goes to a different local school.

Lots. Nice name but if popularity bothers you definitely one to avoid. Usually at lest one or two per class along with Eve etc

It's a lovely name and I don't know of any Lilys.

There was one at the dc's school (200ish pupils too). I think it's beautiful

It is a lovely name but quite prevalent nowadays and may "date" quickly.

Where I originally come from, there are several Lily's - some spelled with two "L"s, some hyphenated.

Really pretty and popular for a reason. I don't get this trying to give your child a bizare name just to be different. Yes you don't want your child to be 1 of 5 in a class but what's the chances really.

It's a pretty name but it is quite popular. There are 2 in DS1's nursery (out of 10 girls) and 3 in DS2's year group (of 30 girls)

There is a middle ground between lily / top ten and a mad name eg messiah. How about Zoe, Miranda, Mary, Philippa all normal nice names now underused because everyone calling their daughters lily, Eve, isabel and Ella.

NanaNina · 15/05/2016 22:58

Oh god - Sooooo many - 2 in our road, 1 great niece, my DIL's sister's girl, 3 in my GD's class (Year 1) Kerala you make a good point but the names you give which are all lovely aren't going to be liked by people who call their children Lily, Evie, Isabella and Ella, usually with a middle name of Mae!

Nana I feel your pain I am trying to get people to think outside the box. I have a 9 year old whose 4 friends at school are all called Eve! Aargh yes these are nice names but why does everyone choose the same 10 names?!

I love the name Lily but as I grew up with a top ten name, so i know from experience how annoying it is to be one of several in your class.

I know 3 babies born in the past couple of years named varients of Lily ( 2 Lily's and one Lileigh Confused yes really!)

Report
greybead · 16/05/2016 12:46

I know one Lily and one Lilli

That's in 10 yrs of child related stuff.

If you like it, you should use it. Names are popular because a lot of people like them. It isn't a bad thing. Plus I always think that if you are called Grace Jones or Jack Evans or something, you will be completely un-googlable as an adult, which considering the way things are going, will be a bonus!
